Chrissie I know Nile Daighter and I wanted to read this. Anne, aren't you interested too? There might be others. ND asked when, and I suggested February, simply b/c I want to read it sonner rather than later. Everyone else should say when they can read it. It doesn't matter to me really.

Anne (reachannereach) Yes, I'm in. I don't really have a preference as to when we read it.

message 4: by Chrissie (new) - added it

Chrissie Let's wait and see if the beginning of February fits ND also?! Fun! Judy, that is great that you want to read ioo. The hard thing now is waiting until February......

message 5: by Chrissie (new) - added it

Chrissie Judy, oh, I never wish for time to hurry. You never know what will happen. Live it day by day, says me. But I am anxious to read the book.

Beth (eparks4232) | 311 comments I actually stuck with this for this year's 666 challenge, so I just finished it, but will enjoy discussing it with you guys when you get to it. I enjoyed it and read it in a couple days, despite being really busy.

Anne (reachannereach) For those people interested in the February group read of The Bad Girl, would you please comment on which week this month you would like to read and discuss this book.

I think I will start it within few days , but I am a slow reader in general :)

Anne (reachannereach) Hi ND,

Slow is good. I haven't started it either.

Hi Anne :)
when do you plan to start ?
anyone else will be reading this one ?

Anne (reachannereach) I plan to start when you start. I don't think anyone else is joining us.

Niledaughter Anne wrote: "I plan to start when you start. I don't think anyone else is joining us."

Ok , i will tell you when I start :)

Judy wrote: "I'm going to have to pass on this one. When I signed up I didn't know I would be in the middle of a Toppler, etc. I look forward to reading your discussion. :-)"

Too bad :( hope we will meet in anther group read .

Anne (reachannereach) ND,

I started the book this a.m. just to take a peek. Any idea when you can start?

Niledaughter Anne wrote: "ND,

I hold it in my hands last night and started the first page but I was so tried and went to sleep :( so probably tonight (wish so :) )

I've read the first 70 pages. It's getting interesting. Should I stop for now so that you can catch up or should we discuss once we have both finished?

Great !
don't stop , and post comments whenever you want to , I like discussion during reading :)

Anne (reachannereach) Okay. I will. :)

message 25: by Niledaughter (last edited Feb 09, 2012 06:24AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Niledaughter I started last night, just the first chapter , hope to read more during the weekend, it was a nice intro the Peruvian society by the 50s . Since I have narrow knowledge about Latin America in general , it was interesting to know how Peruvian see Chileans !

Anther issue here drove my attention ; since I read Love in the Time of Cholera last month , it is the attraction to the French culture , is this common ?

N.B
I am listening to some Mambo now and watching some dances :)

Anne (reachannereach) ND,
great idea to listen to Mambo while reading the first part of this book. I haven't read much Latin American literature so I really can't comment on the attraction to French culture. But, I would guess that the attraction is world wide and not specific to Latin Americans.

Akila (ladyofthepack) Hello everyone,

I have never been a part of a group read before, so I was wondering if I could join you for this one. I will start reading it tonight and hopefully, I should be able to catch up with you soon, at my not-too-slow pace. Please let me know if that sounds ok. :)

Anne (reachannereach) Akila,
of course you should join us. ND has just started it as well. I am probably going to finish it today or tomorrow - the more you read the better it gets and it becomes hard to put down. We can discuss the book at any time.

Niledaughter Sure Akila , you are welcome to join us :) I am still at the begining and Anne may finish anther novel before I finish this one :p so take your time !

Anne , it is good to hear your reaction so far :D

That used to go for Egypt too :)

Anne (reachannereach) Thank you, ND. I won't say too much more until you two get more into the book.

Akila, I hope you will feel free to make comments as you read. Since you're never been a part of a group read I will just ask, If you think that you may be ahead of ND in your reading and want to comment, please write "POSSIBLE SPOILER" at the top of the comment box.

Marieke | 209 comments oh gosh i really want to read this. i wanted to read it with Asmah last year and didn't manage to get to it. i might just have to be a little bit late to the party because i have other books i've *got* to read first (because i'm already behind. sigh.)

Anne (reachannereach) Marieke, I'm almost finished with the book and I can tell you that it's a good read and becomes a page turner (for me, anyway) the further you get into it.

as i recall, it's not terribly long, either, right?

Anne (reachannereach) Right. 276 pages.

message 35: by Marieke (new) - added it

Marieke | 209 comments And we're still technically in the first half of February. See how easy it is to twist my arm?

Anne (reachannereach) I think you're twisting your own arm. Ouch, Doesn't that hurt? We'd be happy for you to join us!

message 37: by Marieke (new) - added it

Marieke | 209 comments It DOES hurt! Um, what does that say about me? Yikes. Lol.

message 38: by Anne (last edited Feb 09, 2012 07:34PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Anne (reachannereach) That you have an aching, twisted arm? I think you'd better put a bird on it. LOL

message 39: by Marieke (new) - added it

Marieke | 209 comments Haha! I might just have to do that. It would go nicely with the cover of the Bad Girl (butterflies, right?)

Actually, those are Peruvian lilies on the cover. Very appropriate for the story. But a bird would look great with those too. :)

oh! i guess i should look more closely. :D

Anne (reachannereach) The way they're drawn it's almost impossible to tell. I also thought that they were butterflies until I noticed the yellow part with the speckles. That's typical of those lilies. I love Peruvian lilies but I can't grow them in my cold climate. :(

message 43: by Marieke (new) - added it

Marieke | 209 comments I wonder if I could grow them...that would be pretty cool to have a garden inspired by literary works.

I like that. A lot. :)

Akila (ladyofthepack) Thank you, Anne and ND. I started it last night and it seems like an easy book to get into. I will comment as I make progress. :) Hopefully, I can catch up quite a bit this weekend.

Niledaughter Marieke , It will be great to have you with us , BTW ...what a conversation !:D my edition cover is in red with the bad girl silhouette on it .

I am about 20% , I agree with you Anne , It is a page turner (I wish I can read faster , I hardly had time to read in the last two days)!

I found chapter two fascinating with all that political historical atmosphere , and now I am trying to figure out what kind of feeling does the bad girl have for the good boy !

Akila: looking forward your comments :)

Anne (reachannereach) ND, glad you're enjoying the bad girl and the good boy. Look forward to chatting about them.

message 49: by Akila (new)

Akila (ladyofthepack) So far, I have read about 70 pages and the book is growing on me. This challenge, I also wanted to read authors I haven't read before. I am usually a bit wary of Nobel Prize winning authors, more like intimidated by them as their language tends to get a wee bit complex for me. That said, I am blown away by Llosa's simple yet crisp writing. Somehow, as he tells you this story you feel at ease, almost like you are listening to a friend tell a story.

It sure is a page-turner and very joyful watching the story unfold. At this point I am quite mad at the bad girl or treating this sweet boy like that. Hmmppff. I will go back to reading now. :D

Anne (reachannereach) Akila, I was also concerned that the writing would be difficult - but, like you, I found it to be a pleasure to read. A page-turner by a Nobel Prize Winner. Sounds like a conundrum.
