I loved Divergent as well. When I first heard about it, the summary didn't pull me in very much, but I received an ARC from the publisher and decided to give it a try. Hardly twenty pages in, I was completely sucked into the story and couldn't put it down. The writing is relatively simple but in a way that engrosses the reader and keeps the pages turning. I would say this is absolutely young adult fiction at its best.
I couldn't agree more! "Divergent" is totally filling the "Hunger Games" void — and well! I was sad when it ended; can't wait for the next one!
I completely disagree. I thought Divergent was slow to start; I wasn't interested in it until 300 pages in. But, by then I was two thirds of the way in, so it seemed like I might as well keep reading. The last 150 pages were exciting and action-packed, but I doubt most of the kids will stick with it to get there. I am shocked that it won a couple categories of the 2011 Best Books here on goodreads!
I actually liked the beginning more so than the end (view spoiler) Other than that I was enthralled. Four is probably my top literary boyfriend. He was so well written, but I did notice his hair color was never mentioned, and that's a big feature on a guy for me.

Every chapter was action-packed for me, I couldn't put it down from the moment I picked it up.

I absolutely loved this book. I loved almost all the characters, even the evil ones. I was so intrigued by Four. When he revealed his fears to Triss I was amazed. I could not put this book down and finished it in less than 24 hours. I love them theme of people fitting into one "stereotype". I think this says so much of our society. And that those who do not fit into one are "outcasts" or divergent. What a unique look at this focal point our society. I am anxiously awaiting

The overall premise -- that people can fit entirely into distinct categories and live their entire lives according to the definitions/edicts/mores/rules of the designated faction -- is fascinating. There is a distinct parallel to the beliefs of certain political, religious and social entities in our current world.
I cannot recommend this novel enough. I certainly hope there will be a continuation. For a first novelist, Roth will undoubtedly become an award-winner.
