Lydia (loverofinformation) | 596 comments This has to be the best dystopian/apocalytic novel I have read since Hunger Games. Divergent is extremely well written. The language is clear and concise. The pacing keeps you wanting to read. And the plot twists seem to make it imperative to keep reading.

The overall premise -- that people can fit entirely into distinct categories and live their entire lives according to the definitions/edicts/mores/rules of the designated faction -- is fascinating. There is a distinct parallel to the beliefs of certain political, religious and social entities in our current world.

I cannot recommend this novel enough. I certainly hope there will be a continuation. For a first novelist, Roth will undoubtedly become an award-winner.

Izzy I loved Divergent as well. When I first heard about it, the summary didn't pull me in very much, but I received an ARC from the publisher and decided to give it a try. Hardly twenty pages in, I was completely sucked into the story and couldn't put it down. The writing is relatively simple but in a way that engrosses the reader and keeps the pages turning. I would say this is absolutely young adult fiction at its best.

Kristen (kittypaws9) I couldn't agree more! "Divergent" is totally filling the "Hunger Games" void — and well! I was sad when it ended; can't wait for the next one!

Tanya #TeacherReader I completely disagree. I thought Divergent was slow to start; I wasn't interested in it until 300 pages in. But, by then I was two thirds of the way in, so it seemed like I might as well keep reading. The last 150 pages were exciting and action-packed, but I doubt most of the kids will stick with it to get there. I am shocked that it won a couple categories of the 2011 Best Books here on goodreads!

Emily I actually liked the beginning more so than the end (view spoiler) Other than that I was enthralled. Four is probably my top literary boyfriend. He was so well written, but I did notice his hair color was never mentioned, and that's a big feature on a guy for me.

I wonder if I read a different book ;). Every chapter was action-packed for me, I couldn't put it down from the moment I picked it up.

I agree, Four is certainly an intriguing, yet genuine character.

Brooke (thecovercontessa) I absolutely loved this book. I loved almost all the characters, even the evil ones. I was so intrigued by Four. When he revealed his fears to Triss I was amazed. I could not put this book down and finished it in less than 24 hours. I love them theme of people fitting into one "stereotype". I think this says so much of our society. And that those who do not fit into one are "outcasts" or divergent. What a unique look at this focal point our society. I am anxiously awaiting Insurgent (Divergent, #2) by Veronica Roth

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I recently finished this book, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the plot was very exciting, and the characters really dynamic. I can't wait to try "Insurgent" soon. :)
