Is anyone else wondering where this Gilkey gets this entitlement thing?! I mean, he has no guilt in out right stealing these books from people who work hard to get them - in fact - he believes that it's his job to settle the score! He writes bad checks and takes it as "war" so he steals even more books! He is completely nuts... I can appreciate that he likes books, but he seems to have many more problems - like the author says, he is going after an image and it is manifesting in the book section. I am continually blown away with his indifference and continual justification of his downright criminal behavior! Anyone else? Am I supposed to wait until I am completely done with the book before I comment like this???

Charmaine (wistad) I agree. He's a nut case. Somehow he rationalizes his stealing as "getting books for free". Wow. It's something how the mind can work stuff out like that. Scary part is, we probably ALL do it to one degree or another. And, no Annie, I don't think you have to wait until you're finished with the book to make comments. I think it's best to comment while it's on your mind, right?

I agree! It is much easier than keeping all those little post-it notes hanging around ;)

This Sanders guy is a little odd... he's actually more than odd, but everyone in this book seems to be a little off! But he sounds very passionate about what he does, but it seems to sometimes come out wrong - like he takes himself VERY seriously, but you know, I guess you have to! When you're not only talking about your passion but your lively-hood, things get personal quickly and I think a good point was being made when that one bookseller made the comment that he/she (I can't remember exactly who it was) was worried that he was going to be glorified or revered as a book expert when he was just a nut case who was stealing from business owners and justifying it! I was flabbergasted many times throughout this book by Gilkey's flippant behavior towards the books he 'got' (stole)! Just goes to show you that people really can be as insane as you might think! It crosses the line with books though... there's no excuse. These collectors are literally preserving history and time! And Gilkey is - well, you read the book!
