message 1: by Jeanne (new)

Jeanne (jeannekc) Have you read or are you planning to read Tigana?

message 2: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 14 comments I just finished it. I had to start early because it became available at the library before the group read.

message 3: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Cotterill (rachelcotterill) This has been recommended to me so many times, I'm really hoping to find time to join in :)

message 4: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments I listened to it a while back. Don't think I'll read it again, but am looking forward to following the discussion!

message 5: by Jean (new)

Jean Hontz (majkia) I HATED Tigana. Sorry. I found it so remorselessly grim I quit about 2/3 of the way through it. What a waste of a life.

message 6: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn | 44 comments I plan on reading it starting Nov 1st.

message 7: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments I might get around to read this sometimes, since I do have three copies.

message 8: by John (new)

John I just bought it! Going to start reading it with the group on November 1st. :)

message 9: by Jasmine M (new)

Jasmine M | 110 comments I'm reading it soon...reluctantly, I've read The Summer Treeby Guy Gavriel Kayand hated it... it was suppose to be my last Kay book, but my sister read Tigana and said it's worth the read, and I was encouraged because it is the group's pick for the month so I decided to read it...but I have no high expectations

message 10: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) | 39 comments Finally found it very recently in a bookstore near me, and I'm gonna read it after I'm finished with my current book Wolfsangel (Craw Trilogy, #1) by M.D. Lachlan

Well that's too bad, because Kay is a fine writer. My favorite is The Lions of al-Rassan and then Sailing to Sarantium/Lord of Emperors.

then did you read The Summer Tree? I've read it in a different group... and people either loved it or hated it...I was with the other team, and so, even though I heard about other "good" books by him, I wasn't interested

message 13: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Yes, I read The Summer Tree and I liked it and plan to read the next two in the trilogy.

I see, tell me what you think of them when you do, they say they are better than the first, well..I do hope I'll like this one, my sister says that he had some interesting ideas and an interesting story...

message 15: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments I read and loved this novel a couple of years ago. Probably one of my favorite Kay books, if not the favorite.

message 16: by Kevin (last edited Oct 26, 2011 02:02PM) (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments I start reading this book. I'm about 100 pages into it, not bad.

message 17: by Katie (new)

Katie (emkaybee) | 29 comments Kevin wrote: "I might get around to read this sometimes, since I do have three copies."

Why do you have three copies?

Just ordered it myself, it was at a decent price and looked interesting. Honestly, I wouldn't have looked at this book if it weren't a pick for November. The blurb isn't my type, but I've been wanting to step out of my fantasy-comfort box for a while.

message 18: by Kevin (last edited Oct 26, 2011 02:39PM) (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments I have three copies because I found all three at a book sale for $1 each.

Nice.

message 20: by Katy (new)

Katy (kathy_h) It's been on my TBR shelf for a while, so I will try and join in.

message 21: by mussolet (new)

mussolet (sovotchka) I'll join in, but maybe later than November 1st. Have to finish my diploma thesis first.
Reading Tigana undisturbed is my personal reward to myself for finishing it :).

message 22: by Dave (new)

Dave Does anyone know why this is not available as an ebook through the Kindle book store? I noticed Lions of al rassan is not offered either but some other Kay books are.

Just curious I found it odd.

I unfortunately wont be able to read with the group as i've got a couple books i want to finish it before i read this one but it is one i'm very much looking forward to soon and i'll come back and enjoy reading the discussion (albeit after the fact)

:) Looks like it.

message 25: by Dave (new)

Dave Thank you.
I guess i should have been more specific. I'm in the US and when i go there it has no pricing information and says "not available in the USA"

Helen | 3616 comments Mod
I have it in the UK for kindle, and will be reading it in a couple of weeks.

message 27: by Laura (last edited Oct 27, 2011 09:36PM) (new)

Laura (blueyedtiger) This is actually my favorite book. If you don't finish you will never know why. I would say that I struggled with reading it for at least the first third of the book, possibly longer but the ending made it well worth it.

I think the main reason I liked about it was that I could relate. I have a huge sense of pride about the region I was born and raised in (the Central Coast region of California). I often find myself telling people about it and I could imagine the horror of outsiders not being able to know the name my home region.

Thought I would also add that I've heard many people say they disliked the Fionavar series but then loved this book.

message 28: by Sheriffkilla (new)

Sheriffkilla I'm reading (and loving) Paul Kearney's Ten Thousand right now but I usually read a couple of books at the same time. I was going to read Kay's Under Heaven but since I joined this group, I guess Tigana it is. I'm a little weary because of 1990 release date, I prefer more modern fantasy because since ASOIAF(especially Storm of Swords) changed the game there is so much better stuff out there but I hear some great things about this book so I'm cool with it.

message 29: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlyanne) I have started reading already because my time in November is limited. I read the Fionavar series many years ago and though there were things I like I ended up disliking the whole thing by the time I was done.

I picked up a 10th anniversary version of Tigana and liked reading about how the author came up with and then developed the concepts, and what sparked his imagination. As I have been reading I find that again there are things that I like and then many things that I do not. But the story is readable and I am about halfway, looking forward to what comes next.

I haven't read any of Kay's more recent works, so given the recommendations above I am adding them to my list. And I think I am going to have to re-read ASOIAF as well. :)

message 30: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (yinari) Just ordered the book on BookDepository, so as soon as I have it I'll start reading. Given the delivery time it will probably be a few weeks after the rest of you started lol.
I remember starting to read this book a lot of years ago. My library had it only in Dutch so I read it like that, but I'm gonna read it in English this time. Somehow I never finished the book the first time, for reasons I no longer remember. But it still seems like a good book, so I'm giving it another try now =).

message 31: by Traci (new)

Traci I loved this book. Don't really want to say too much. But I'm looking forward to the discussions.

Nice! I love that feeling when it happens.

message 34: by Chris (new)

Chris (chriswheth) I will start as soon as a finish my current book, The Serialist: A Novel. I am a bit disappointed in this book but I am way too close to the end to give up.

Hoping Tigana is better

message 35: by Jeni (new)

Jeni | 13 comments Once I have finished The Better Angels of Our Nature: A Novel and figure out where my delightful nephew has hidden Kick-Ass so that I can finish that too, I intend to read Tigana....hopefully that will be this weekend :)

message 36: by Candace (new)

Candace (cprimackqcom) I am anxious to get my copy in the mail. This will be my first Key book and my first book with the club. I am anxious to try both!

message 37: by Sheriffkilla (new)

Sheriffkilla Well I just started it like 2 days ago. Like a 3rd of the way in. Gotta say it starts of pretty slow and chapters sometimes start with a little too much infodumpness for my tastes BUT... It's really good. Either way, wait at LEAST until chapter 3/4 before you say you don't like it. Because I thought it was whatevas the first few chapters but now I'm loving it. Also a new character that just got introduced might be one of my favorite female characters EVER. She just got introduced but she is hella interesting so far.

message 38: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) | 39 comments Sherrifkilla, I experienced that too, initially it was just clumps of information and background exposition, which I found difficult to get into (coz I tend to read on the train to and from work, hence it's difficult to get into detailed narratives) but I'm into the third chapter now, and I'm quite enjoying the richness of detail.

message 39: by Jasmine M (new)

Jasmine M | 110 comments I started last night and got to chapter 4 now.. so far can't say what I think...beside the two moons there is no fantasy so far...oh and there is mention of wizards... I think I'll read some more before deciding weather I like it or not...there is one think I'm sure of though..I'm pretty convinced that he's using this writing style to confuse me...I can barely manage understanding english as it is *Sigh*

message 40: by Sheriffkilla (last edited Nov 02, 2011 01:32AM) (new)

Sheriffkilla Yeah certainly if you aren't fluent in English, he isn't an easy writer. I've been living in America since I was 8(nearly 20 years) and I still have to look up a bunch of words as I read.
Far as magic, it's certainly low fantasy but there was some mentions of magic by chapter 4, I think even some magic actually used in the story.

message 41: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) | 39 comments I think it's just not a book you can just read snippets of, you need to devote the time, say on a weekend to immerse yourself in it to truly appreciate it. I'm guessing you're 28 then Sherrifkilla? If so, then so am I.

message 42: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments There's plenty of magic in this book.

July 83, I'm a cancer though :)

message 44: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) | 39 comments Wow coincidence, I'm July 83 as well, Leo though:)

I'm quite interested to see how the book expands, it looks promising so far.

message 45: by Sheriffkilla (last edited Nov 02, 2011 05:42AM) (new)

Sheriffkilla I just finished Part 2 it's certainly setting up pretty well and that seems to be the end of the set up. I think now "Act II" begins. I already have some semblance of how I expect it to end, so hopefully the writer twists my expectations. I can post them but don't want to spoil anything, maybe we should start a new thread since people are beginning to read the book?

message 46: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) | 39 comments You could do that, of course, although at the moment I'm one of those who've just started it so there's not many spoilers that I know.

message 47: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Feel free to start a thread.

message 48: by Sam (last edited Nov 08, 2011 09:45AM) (new)

Sam | 33 comments I got this book out of the library to read for the first of the month but my husband has stolen it and so will have to hope he finishes it quickly. I do have to finnish Game of Thrones first myself.

message 49: by Kate (new)

Kate Starting it today! Sounds interesting, I am looking forward to it. Friends have been recommending I read Guy Gavriel Kay for at least 3 years so this is as good a time as any to try him out.

message 50: by Sheriffkilla (new)

Sheriffkilla I'm almost done and I like it but don't love it so far. We'll see if the last 150 pages live up to the hype.
