Christina, I have read A Summer Without Dawn, but I have definitely read better books about the Armenian genocide. Of course this is only my opinion but you will see here what displeased me about the book: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/.... I recommend instead Not Even My Name: A True Story or Skylark Farm: A Novel. I haven't read it yet, but I want to read Armenian Golgotha. I bet this will be the best......

I really enjoyed The Book Thief and Cutting for Stone. There are lines in the latter you will never forget! I believe I have reviews of all these books......

Oh, and The Glass Palace is a good one by Ghosh? I like his eralier books better than the more recent ones.

if the armenian genocide theme interests you, you may enjoy The Gendarme, which i read recently... it's fiction told from the point of view of a turkish soldier in love with an armenian woman... not the greatest book i've ever read, but the idea of the book was interesting at least...

The Forty Days of Musa Dagh by Franz Werfel is a well-written book on the armenian genocide. Werfel is terrific writer. I was mesmerized by the story.

Aren't Ghosh's earlier pieces fabulous?! Have you read The Shadow Lines? That is set in Bangladesh - a very good book! Yup, I have read Calcutta Chromosone.

I think there is a review in the beginning of the "The Book Thief" and it says that if you do not like this book, there is something wrong with you. I agree and think that is funny.

There are not all so wonderful reviews of The Gendarme, but I have been considering it...... So in your view it wasn't so hot:

I'm one of the few who didn't like The Book Thief. Can't really explain it but found something irritating in it's style.

The Pillars of the Earth has been on my TBR for ages so may use that for UK as well. Thanks Christina. Quite a few of your selections are ones I have been meaning to read for ages.
