[Book:Shantaram|33600] by Gregory David Roberts is an autobiographical novel that tells the story of Lin, an Australian convicted of armed robbery who escapes from jail and ends up in Bombay/Mumbai. Its an immense door-stop of a book, but the description of the cities slums and the people living there are fantastic and it is immensly readable.
(The only thing that I didn't like about this book is that the author tends towards purple in the extreme when describing scenes between the narrator Lin and his love-interest Karla).
I thought about this one, which I have been wanting to read for ages, but it is just, as you say, enormous. I love India, but have not been to Mumbai, so I really think I should read it soon.
