Hey, im new and local and was just wondering what everyone was reading right now?

I'm currently fighting my way through Lisey's Story by Stephen King and rereading the "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Philip Pullman when I need a brake

Wow! Only one post huh? I guess I'll add to the descussion...

I am curently reading Inkspell, as suggested to me by a friend. After then I entend to read Inkdeath, and finish the series all together.

How are you liking that series? I've heard some good things about it but for some reason I just never picked it up. I'm looking for something to read next, I should be finished with my current book within the day, and I can't really think of anything.

It is well written, but I an constantly reminded that it is a young adult read. It is not that I mind young adult fiction, but sometimes it's a little... predictiable.

I can understand that. I enjoy a lot of young adult/teen fiction(in the way of the His Dark Materials tilogy, the Harry Potter books and, go ahead and laugh, the Twilight saga) but that tends to be the only major downfall with the genre.

True, true. I have not read the Twilight books; everybody raved about them so much, and I hate following the crowd, so I'm waiting for it to calm down before I pick them up.

Inkdeath is not that great. But it is the ending to the trilogy, and I had to know the ending. Though I probably won't read it again for quite some time. Inkspell was always my favorite.

Anywho, in case someone does reply, I was reading a bunch of random short stories from Asimov (Nightfall, the Machine that Won the War, etc), but now I'm switching gears and checking out Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman.

edit: I lied, I forgot about FreakAngels. I don't think that counts in this club, though.

I am reading Showdown by Ted Dekker right now.

I'm in the middle of the Last Olympian. the last book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. It's a pretty solid series.

If you're looking for a good source of short stories and even some flash fictions, and you don't mind listening to them instead of reading, you should check out Psuedopod, Escape Pod and Podcastle. They have a solid selection of Horror, Science Fiction and Fantasy stories respectively.

I'm reading Northhanger Abbey, it's Jane Austin's last work. A little off her usual down to earth romance but very interesting.

That reminds me of the next book I want to read. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It looks to be fantastic

It's one book. Seth Grahame-Smith took the original work of Jane Austin and... expanded on it.

Sounds good to me... although I don't know how I like the dismanteling of Austins work.

It's not meant to be taken seriously. That is, I think, the point of it. I think so long as it's established that they are borrowing, or in this case adding to, another authors work they can do so without disrespect to the original writings.

I know :) I will probably enjoy it, there's just something about adding to the classic's that drives me mad. Not that I don't enjoy the read though.

@Re:no : I will have to check that out. I love zombie movies, but I haven't gotten to read any books about them.

I think books cant be solely about zombies. They either have to be a part of the book that doesn't get harped on or a looming background threat while the story is about the survival aspect. Maybe its just me and all the fantasy I read though

Your classic annoyances. According to you there is no new story, it's just benn retold. So the spin-offs of classics are no different, they're just changing it even less.

Now ladies. Lets not fight. Lets all just agree that zombies are an impending threat that books like this are helping us prepare for. That aside I think we can also agree that Pirates>Ninjas.

Haha! We're not really fighting, Rebecca is my cousin, we like to discuss things... harshly ;) This is mellow compared to other discussions we've had! It's all in love.

I don't know... Pirates>Ninjas? I haven't really taken a side on that yet.

Dang... Pirates = Jack Sparrow. Ninjas = Basilisk. Pirates have more fun, but ninjas can kill people without leaving a trace (plus, they bathe). How about ninja-pirates? Now that would be awesome.

@Chelsea you just melted my heart by referencing basilisk. I'm also that you didn't equate pirates with One Piece.

As for the fighting I wouldn't mind if it was the verbal equivalent of knock down drag outs. I'm used to much harsher arguments.
