Music is the literature of the heart; it commences where speech ends.
Alphonse de Lamartine
"Alphonse de Lamartine (born October 21, 1790) published his first collection of poetry, Méditations poétiques, in 1820, establishing his reputation as a key Romantic writer of the French literary movement."
This may not be a genre that is preferred by many, in fact, I disliked country music immensely before I lived in Tennessee. It had to grow on me and it isn't the only type of music I listen to, but I felt like shuffling Pandora today and this song came on. It emphasizes exactly the very purpose of this thread. I will quote some of the words just in case the very sound of country is like scratching on a chalkboard for you, but it proves my point.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEUWx...
I Go Back
Kenny Chesney
"I go back to a two-toned short-bed Chevy
Drivin my first love out to the levvy
Livin life with no sense of time
And I go back to the feel of the fifty yard line
A blanket, a girl, and some raspberry wine
Wishin time would stop right in its tracks
Every time I hear that song...I go back"
Enjoy! If not this song, I hope it might jog the memory of some of you who have 'that song' that takes you to a certain time in your life. The one when every time you hear it time goes in reverse and you reverie about that moment. Feel free to share! Or just go listen to it one more time and enjoy the feeling of the memory.

Alphonse de Lamartine
What a great quote! That helps explain why I like literature AND music. It couldn't have been otherwise! :-)
Heather wrote: "This may not be a genre that is preferred by many, in fact, I disliked country music immensely before I lived in Tennessee. Do you think we can also "go forward" with music?
Aaron wrote: "We must go forward taking what we've been given and making it our own."Would you mind expounding on that, Aaron?
Ying Ying wrote: "We indeed "go back" with music! How about going forward... Do you think we can also "go forward" with music? "What do you mean 'go forward', Ying Ying? It's probably what Aaron was going on with his comment but I don't follow either of your comments...Sorry!
Regarding Kenny Chesney,"Every time I hear that song...I go back"
When we go back, we go back to where we've been. Inspired by our tradition. When we go back, we carry on and in our own way. Just as others will do as they look back on us today.
Heather wrote: "Ying Ying wrote: "We indeed "go back" with music! How about going forward... Do you think we can also "go forward" with music? "What do you mean 'go forward', Ying Ying? It's probably what Aaron ..."
Some songs make you "go back", making you think about the past; which songs "go forward", making you think about the future?
Some songs make you believe. It's all a paper moon until you believe in something:https://youtu.be/ndxAZfJxfy8
Aloha wrote: "Some songs make you believe. It's all a paper moon until you believe in something:https://youtu.be/ndxAZfJxfy8"
Relaxed.
Why thank you Heather, was just elaborating as requested.
Aloha wrote: "Some songs make you believe. It's all a paper moon until you believe in something:https://youtu.be/ndxAZfJxfy8"
Believe! That is a good word for a way to listen to music. I like that, Aloha!
I think that is why music is attractive. It makes us believe in something, or puts us in the mood (another way of believing).
I had a few more thoughts about how we can "go forward" with music as Ying Ying said. Maybe this is not the specific way she intended, but it does relate to my thoughts in some way. Here is one song that came to mind.I am not intending to get personal by this post, but this song does give me strength and hope for my future. I think hope is a great futuristic word or state of being as in 'hopeful' for my future.
Side note: I am NOT promoting Christianity in any way just because this song is written by believers in Christianity. The words, I think, are for Christianity in general and not related to a certain denomination. If Christianity is not your belief or makes you uncomfortable, you are more than welcome to skip this post!

Sidewalk Prophets - "The Words I Would Say"
I want to write some of the lyrics that give me a hopeful impression:
Be strong in the Lord and
Never give up hope,
You're going to do great things
I already know...
I want to tell you
That I keep on praying
that love will find you
where you are...
Here is another song also related to my above post. Faith seems to be a type of belief that Aloha mentioned. We can have faith in our future based on what we believe. This song also relates to my current situation but it does give me faith for the future.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCpP0...
Casting Crowns--Praise You in This Storm
A few lyrics:
You are who You are
No matter where I am
Every tear I cry
You hold in your hands
You never left my side
And though my heart is torn,
I will praise you in this storm
Here is a kind of fun one. Something I look forward to in my future (with hope, too). It's just a fun song.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zO6D_...
Queen--Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Wow! Thank you Heather and Aloha for the beautiful and inspiring songs, whose magic transports us into alternate worlds. As Aloha says, perhaps that's what makes music so powerful and attractive.Heather, I really enjoyed the song by Sidewalk prophets! I think they will become a favorite group of mine, even if I am not strictly Christian :D I find their lyrics deeply inspiring.
Btw, John Lennon's Imagine would also fall into this category of make imagine, make inspire. Here is a world version, sung by people of all races; simply beautiful:

I was reading this thread and this old Stevie Wonder song came to mind. - )Heaven is 10 Zillion Light Years Away
They say that heaven is ten zillion light years away
And just the pure at heart will walk her righteous streets someday
They say that heaven is ten zillion light years away
But if there is a God, we need Him now
"Where is your God"
That's what my friends ask me
And I say it's taken Him so long
'Cause we've got so far to come
Tell me people
Why can't they say that hate is ten zillion light years away
Why can't the light of good shine God's love in every soul
Why must my color black make me a lesser man
I thought this world was made for every man
He loves us all, that's what my God tells me
And I say it's taken Him so long
'Cause we've got so far to come
But in my heart I can feel it
Feel His spirit wow oh woo
Feel it, yeah, feel His spirit
I, can't say that heaven is ten zillion light years away
But if so let all be pure at heart
Just to walk her righteous streets I pray
Let God's love shine within to save our evil souls
For those who don't believe will never see the light
"Where is my God" He lives inside of me
And I say it's taken Him so long
'Cause we've got so far to come
Ah people, "where is your God?"
Inside please let Him be
And I say it's taken Him so long
'Cause we've got so far to come
But if you open your heart you can feel it yeah yeah
Feel His spirit, wow oh wow
Feel it, you can feel His spirit
I opened my heart one morning and
I sure enough could feel it yeah yeah
Feel His spirit yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
You can feel it, yeah, feel His spirit
You can feel it, yeah, feel His spirit

I've never heard that, but I like the words, especially when he says
""Where is my God" He lives inside of me
And I say it's taken Him so long
'Cause we've got so far to come"
I'm sure I hadn't thought about the song in quite awhile; but something about the above conversation triggered something. You can find it on U-tube and listen to it. Yes. It's a beautiful thought. It's a beautiful song. Sincere. Honest. Heartfelt. Yes. I've always like the refrain, "it's taken him so long 'Cause we've got so far to come". Glad you liked it! - )
Aha, another sleeping thread!Let's see one of my early memories... Used for a TV series for kids in black and white.
Does this make you smile?
https://youtu.be/6zU2Q-Yc5zg
Mmm I was a bit too quick ;-)This was the tune, the other sounds very much alike...
https://youtu.be/qzw4WA4F5Eg
Wow, I’ve never heard of either of those tunes. Cute for a kid’s series. I don’t think I could listen to it constantly but I can see how it would bring back old memories.Regarding the first song you posted, where the heck is Mormon Lake? I’ve never heard of that!Just curious...
Somewhere in Arizona it seems:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormon_...
Never heard of it before too ;-) I just thought the clip was fun.
And you're right it sounds pretty old fashioned now very 60's and it"s not something I would listen to every day. But once in a while...
There is one of those old tunes I still like very much, it's a little bit older maybe you know this one?
https://youtu.be/ZpdkUmtBaeU
It was very famous in the 60's in a choir version, also pretty with the glockenspiel this is the original german version:
https://youtu.be/-1yl5lgMUYU
No I don't know either. I didn't know the kid's shows you were talking about before. Dirk, I wasn't even alive in the 60's how could I know even older tunes??? I take no offense, don't worry.
Heather, now you make me feel old;-)I remember the sixties although vaguely but this brings me to another memory.
This time from kindergarten. I remember being 5 years old or so (1963-64) and doing a dance for parents day with the class all dressed up like Snow-white and the Seven Dwarfs (there were probably more than seven;-)
The music always stayed with me. Here is a clip of the movie it was from. I assume non of the teachers had seen the movie ;-)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28EAW...
We're not comparing ages here. lol That's one thing I like about this group. We have all ages of people, all nationalities, different perspectives and experiences. I think these things make this group diverse and enjoyable. I like getting to know each of you!
The last clip was from a movie from 1960 with Melina Mercouri. And I just thought about a another movie from 1968. The music was composed before the shooting so the director could have it played through big speakers when filming so creating the right atmosphere and tempo for the actors.
Surely you know this one or the music?
I love how the scene begins with this extreme close up. than moving back as we watch Jill moving in the train station and we can see her talking to chief through the window and as she walks out the door the camera moves up and as we clear the roof the music bursts out.
https://youtu.be/7WPMoVtHSOs
Sorry, never heard of the movie nor the music. I was born in the 70s just to put it out there and didn’t really follow older movies as a child in the 70s.
You must really think I’m older, Dirk. Just FYI, I have a selfie in my profile. Maybe that will give you a clue and save both of us the embarrassment. Lol
OK. So I had a quick look at your profile foto's. Nice pics and I must say you look pretty good for someone born in the seventies ;-)Alright so from now on I'll treat you as if you could be my daughter ;-)
Better?
But I still think Once upon a Time in the West is an exceptionally good movie with wonderful music by Ennio Morricone.
I you have not seen it all I can say please try to!
You won't regret it.
In the meantime I'm going to try and come up with musictips from the 70's and 80's ;-)
Late Thursday I got an email from an old friend (from my schooldays so I've known him for almost 40 years)But the last 20 years he’s been living in Bangladesh. How and why that’s a long story, maybe for another time. But in the mail he sent me a link for some music.
Anybody ever heard of The Berlin School of Music? Krautrock? Cosmic Music?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krautro...
The link I got was this:
Klaus Schulze Machine de Plaisir (1993)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klaus_S...
Klaus Schulze started at the end of the sixties with the German group Tangerine Dream where he played drums. Later he was a member of Ashra Temple and in the early 70’s he started his solo career. And has released up till 40 albums. And countless boxes with non album works. Like this:
https://youtu.be/jEwkcrp1-KQ
Here he is with a live recording with the exceptional vocals of Lisa Gerrard (who appears around 9:20)
https://youtu.be/tCl7_pAbvvY
If this is not enough there’s lot’s more on Youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/results?searc...
Lisa Gerrard has collaborated on soundtracks for Gladiator and The Insider among others.
This is one of her best songs:

What an amazing voice!

A couple of weeks ago , in the Classic Thread, I told the story about how I came to know the music of Richard Strauss through the movie “The Year of Living Dangerously” In that movie there was another piece of very beautiful music that I already knew: L’enfant” by Vangelis.
It came from the album Opera Sauvage, Vangelis released in 1979.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Op%C3%A...
Vangelis later became famous for soundtracks for Bladerunner, 1492: Conquest of Paradise, Chariots of Fire and Alexander.

Another even more beautiful piece of the album was titled Hymne:

And a bit longer, more dreamy and with a jazzy feel: Rève:

Good Morning, or Afternoon or Evening Everyone!I'm sorry I have been so absent! I want to say hello with a song. I've just been listening to this and felt to share :)
It's not the full Philharmonic Orchestra, That was just too much for this morning, this is softer so sit back, close your eyes, relax.
Enjoy!

Good afternoon for me, just got home from work - 20 minutes on the bike, nice weather, should be lovely but we still have to wear a facemask in the city, no fun with glasses ((fog)Thanks for the link, was indeed nice and relaxing.
Just this weekend I discovered a young Australian pianoplayer, a bit in the same style, but he improvises a lot!

That first link was very soothing. Thank you!
The second one wouldn't come up. It said it was unavailable. :(

“Music is a total constant. That's why we have such a strong visceral connection to it, you know? Because a song can take you back instantly to a moment, or a place, or even a person. No matter what else has changed in your or the world, that one song says the same, just like that moment.”
― Sarah Dessen, Just Listen
You could share with us the reason why you like the particular piece or genre. If it brings back memories, what are they? If it makes you feel a certain way, how? The possibilities are endless!
I hope to get some great discussions here as we share our preferences and differences and even enlighten each other with some works with which we are not already familiar.
“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent”
― Victor Hugo
