Gavin Li The story of the unidentified is set in the future as a science fiction, but actually this future is no far away from us. I can tell that it is approximately 10 years or less from now. Because all the technologies they have are pretty close to what we have right now, but they just change the name slightly. For example they change itouch to intouch. Our main character Katey (kid) is living and learning in a mall-like school, they call this the “game”. There are cameras all over them; they have to act like they are on TV all the time with some extra exaggerated expressions and tones when they are talking just to draw the attention of the sponsors. The sponsors are all viewing those for marketing research. In the school they don’t have grades, instead they will have levels. As long as you do well on the assignments, you can move one to the next level. In their society, Google almost knows everything just like the god, so instead of saying “oh my god” they will say “oh my Google”. The society is created as a dystopia, because there is not any privacy in the “game”. Everything they do is recorded to show, all of their personal information are showing to everyone in the game. I think this is reflecting the social networks in our community. The writer is trying to say that if the social networking cites keep expanding without any privacy protection, the story may be what we end up to shortly.
Almost every player in the “Game” wants to be “branded”. Which means they have drew the attention from the sponsors and become the celebrities in the “Game”. They can get all the latest technology devices and the most beautiful and fanciest clothes. But Kid never wants to be extremely popular or be “branded”. She likes to do what she interested in, she doesn’t update her profile and she only got a few friends. She doesn’t know that if she keeps acting like this, she will get kicked out of the game, until her conference with her advisor. Then she found out a group of people name “the unidentified” on the internet, which makes her find out some secret in the game that no one noticed.
I really like this story because the writer truly pictured the society in the near future in my mind. As a teenager, I can really share the same feeling with Kid. She doesn’t want to be popular and do whatever others do. But she got no choice, if she doesn’t do that, she is going to be kicked out. In our life, if we don’t do the same thing as others, we will be consider as “weird”, then no one is willing to be friend with you. So I think this is a perfect book for teenager readers.
This book is leading us to think about what is going to happen in our near future if our society keeps developing the same way. I hope you to read it and discover your own way of what our future should be like.

I loved this book and the similarities between our society and the one in the story is amazing. I have two thoughts to run past you. First, what do you think the mask symbolize that the Unidentified wear?
