i've read Snow Angels (if you haven't Laurie) - its a great read...lots of it takes place outside in Finland , solving the crime - there are a few skiing scenes (his wife in the book works as a ski instructor or did)
Would Into Thin Air work for part A, with mountain climbing being a cold, winter activity?By the way - I grew up in Maine, too. :)
i'm wondering if you would accept either The Game or The Code: The Unwritten Rules Of Fighting And Retaliation In The Nhl? they're both about hockey, and while the hockey they're talking about is indoors, people play hockey outdoors, too. thanks for your help! :)
Would these work?Skating Shoes for 1
Elephant Run for 2 - takes place in Burma (not that I would want to travel there to escape winter, honestly, but it is always warm there!)
For part 2, does the location have to be warm NOW (meaning somewhere in the south hemisphere) or just a place that would be warm/tropical in general...like Florida or Mexico?
Would either of these work for book 1?
The White Darkness about a trip to Antartica (a cold, outdoor winter activity), or
The Traitor Game, cover shows hunting in the snow
Does a book set in New York City at Christmas shopping time with snow on the cover work or are you looking for an outdoor activity only?
I'm looking for approval on
for book 2 - as is probably apparent from the title, it's set in Bangkok, Thailand.

Yes, Into Thin Air works just fine.
Maine is a great place!

Sea Glass Anita Shreve"
They both sound fine

Joe Pickett is a game warden tracking a killer"
Yea, its winter with snow, so its fine by me
Christine US wrote: "For part 2, does the location have to be warm NOW (meaning somewhere in the south hemisphere) or just a place that would be warm/tropical in general...like Florida or Mexico?"Warm whenever is fine ... a place away from cold.

Thank you! :)
ok I have Frostbite for book a. They go on a ski trip and The Summer I Turned Pretty, the description doesnt say where they are but they go to a beach house for the summer.
The people on this cover are holding hockey sticks, but I can't tell if they're really playing hockey. Will this qualify for Book 1?

"Hockey's good, doesn't really matter too much where since we play the sport during our winter months.
I'd like to read the 3rd in a series of books set in Tempe, Arizona: Hammered. Although, the GR description for this book doesn't mention Arizona, it does show the setting is Tempe, Arizona. Plus, the 2nd book in the series Hexed mention Tempe, Arizona in its description. Is this book okay to use for Book 2?
Laurie wrote: "Randi wrote: "Do these work? Book 1: Snow Angels, Book 2: Wide Sargasso Sea?"Both work fine for me"
Since Snow Angels is okay, would reading it's sequel (set in the same cold Helsinki terrain) work for my choice? Lucifer's Tears

What about
for A? It's about a group of people trapped by a blizzard in an out-of-the-way Turkish village.

Fine by me - it has snow!
Would Starvation Lake work for A? It's about the death of a hockey coach? How about Ten Thousand Islands for B? Setting is Florida's Gulf coast. We go to Florida every year to escape winter in this same spot.

Both are fine by me
Is Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary okay for Book 1? They spend the last half of the book hiking in the snowy Rocky Mountains.

I live in Manchester, Maine. Once the weather turns cold and snowy, we have many winter activity options available to us. A lot of us spend time on our many ski slopes and trails downhill or cross country skiing, snowboarding and snow shoeing or riding the trails on the snow mobile. Many others head for our frozen lakes to ice skate, ice fish, or play hockey. Then there are the snowbirds who seek vacations away from the cold and snow.
For this task, you will read 2 books:
Book 1: Book 1 should involve a cold, outdoor winter activity in some fashion. This could include a figure skater or skier on the cover, a winter activity in the title, a main character with a cold, outdoor job or hobby (like a ski instructor or hockey coach). Examples: Ice Castles, The Ski Bum, Open Ice: Reflections and Confessions of a Hockey Lifer, Simply Irresistible, Fresh Powder
Required: If the winter activity is not obvious from the cover, title, or GR's description of the book, explain the connection when you post.
Book 2: Book 2 should involve a place you would travel to get away from the cold, wintery weather. These lists might help:
Takes you away... to the beach
Caribbean Literature
Death in a Warm Climate
