Charly wrote: "Finished Nicholas Nickleby and am starting Jude the Obscure, and A Christmas Carol"Jude the Obscure is one of my all time favorites.
Charly wrote: "Just finished Jude the Obscure and am reading A Cup of Tea for a break in my classics challenge.Michelle I really did not like Jude. It was my first read of Hardy and I am not too ..."
I haven't gotten to A Reliable Wife yet, it is on my TBR pile though. Hardy needs some getting used to - I am plugging through Our Mutual Friend. Dickens introduces about 20 characters in the first few pages. Thank goodness I am doing it through a group read here on Goodreads. I am also starting The Mill on the Floss. Not sure how I feel about Eliot yet.
Charly wrote: "Finished A Cup of Tea and am now reading Cousin Bette." What did you think of A Cup of Tea: A Novel of 1917?
David wrote: "Thanks for the welcome Charly, much appreciated :)" Yes, welcome...we are a bit of a quiet group...now reading The Many Lives & Secret Sorrows of Josephine B. and you?
Charly wrote: "Just finished The Lost Symbol." Poor Mr. Brown he seems stuck in formula for writing his books.
Charly wrote: "funny you should say that. See my review. His first works Deception Point and Digital Fortress were better in my mind."My son loved Digital Fortress. I haven't read any Dan Brown since the Da Vinci Code.
Currently reading Before Green Gables and am struggling through Mansfield Park. My love of Austen's other books is not translating.
Love Austen- I hope you keep with it. I really enjoyed Fanny.Almost finished with American Gods which I really like - it is really different, and starting Lionheart.
MichelleCH wrote: "Love Austen- I hope you keep with it. I really enjoyed Fanny. Thanks Michelle! I'm more into the story now that Henry Crawford has proposed to Fanny. However, this didn't happen until the book was half over! The play preparation took far too long without establishing Fanny's charachter. I understand it told us a lot about Crawford and Maria though. Ms. Price is very different from other Austen heroines which can be good and bad.
As I'm officially a Providence resident as of a week ago, I'm currently reading
If you can't tell, I'm attempting to read all of Austen novels.
Charly wrote: "Starting Sarah's Key."I thought that the movie version was excellent, it is on Netflix instant. Currently reading
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
Bridget wrote: "Started The Snow Child last night and I'm hooked." Thanks Bridget, added it to my TBR, reading A Tale of Two Cities.... I love Dickens, although I have had some weird dreams after reading this before bed.
Currently reading
I'm a quarter of the way in and like the story so far, but at times it seems the author is trying too hard to be descriptive.
Bridget, I haven't read Anna Karenina yet, looking for a group read so I can share others thoughts. Let me know what you think...Reading Ethan Frome, feels like a story I will re- read in the future. Really enjoying it so far, even with the undertone of sadness.
I could not finish the last book I put up here! For some reason I had bad luck finding well written novels this Summer. Anyway, I'm reading
right now and it's rather good so far.
wow it seems to be getting rave reviews from some of my othe GR friends too. Added. Thanks for the recommendation Charly!

Hi Michelle! I don't know if it's just my commute but I kept falling asleep when attempting Anna Karenina. I will try again at a later date.
hi there all! This summer i decided to give stephen king a second chance after not really enjoying his work previously. i started reading the Dark Tower series, liked it, then arrived at the middle of the third book and lost interest. i had the rest of the series lined up to read but now that i am at a stand still, i don't have any backups!
i am feeling like i need to read a book about trees. any suggestions?
hmm...
time to go peruse my bookshelf...

Books about trees eh? You could start the awakening land trilogy by Conrad Richter. The first book is
The Trees. I still need to read the third book but it's a good series.
No worries Charly I'm taking the commuter rail ::thumbs down::
Thanks, The Trees sounds pretty good. I just requested it at the library! woo!So to pass the time until The Trees shows up at my library, I pulled one of my favorite books off the shelf, Iceland's Bell by Halldor Laxness.
Charly wrote: "Bridget, Check out Juliet, I loved it."Added it to my TBR. Thanks for suggesting it Charly!
Bridget, you definitely need something less dense for the commuter rail ( or when driving:)
Reading The Odd Women, I think I like Gissing. Next is Fahrenheit 451 which I can't believe I haven't read yet.
Reading Rainbow Valley and loving it. I never read the last two of the series. Also trying to get into Pandora's Star. BF and I are in a reading challenge where I have to read a hard sci fi series and he has to read the hunger games. I can't get into it.
Charly, Hard Times is a favorite. Finished Fahrenheit 451. In the middle of The Crimson Petal and the White.
Nearly done with The Case of the Deadly Butter Chicken: A Vish Puri Mystery and about to start Dark Star
Oh I've read them a couple of times. It's been about 10 years though so I figured I needed a refresh before seeing the movie :)
I have just begun The Cat's Table by Michael Ondaatje. I'm not used to his narrator's tempo so getting into the flow of the book hasn't been easy.
Alex, it looks interesting. I've added it to my TBR. Just finished Caleb's Crossing; now reading The Importance of Being Earnest.
Just finished The End of the Affair, now reading The Hare With Amber Eyes: A Family's Century of Art and Loss.
Bridget, I'm listening to Bossypants. I've added Is It Just Me?. I love some laughs. I am stuck in a world of heavy reads The Count of Monte Cristo & 1Q84 :)
