C.O. Bonham (dolphin18cb) | 54 comments I found this intersting article online most of you might have read it already since I have seen Radio Times linked to a lot.

I remember Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd century it was on Fox saturday mornings when I was younger. It actually didn't do too bad. I liked it.

I have also seen The Return of the World's Greatest Detective. It was funny, though I thought that it would have made a better series than a stand alone movie.

Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments OMG. Where can I watch The Hound of the Baskervilles with Tom Baker? Is it all on youtube. That is amazing.

I have seen Sherlock Hound and Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century but I haven't seen any of the others. I have heard very good things about the Russian Holmes.

J. Rubino (jrubino) | 317 comments I remember in the 80s they did two films - the Hound and Sign of Four - with Ian Richardson (I think) as Holmes. They were not strictly Canonical, but well done, quite melodramatic and colorful.
A Study in Terror - the other Holmes vs the Ripper film (I blogged about Murder By Decree this week) is a hard "get" - I think you can watch the entire film online, but it's in Spanish.

Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments I found this article that promotes this book Sherlock Holmes on Screen:

The Ten Best Sherlocks That You've Probably Never Seen

Here's the list:
1. William Gillette
2. Unknown (First Sherlock in film with a narrative, Adventures of Sherlock Holmes; or, Held to ransom (1905)
3. Alwin Neuß
4. Eille Norwood
5. Arthur Wontner
6. Douglas Wilmer
7. Vasili Livanov
8. Ian Richardson
9. Michael Caine
10. Rupert Everett

My boyfriend bought me William Gillette America's Sherlock Holmes for Christmas. It's very long! I wish it was possible for me to see one of his performances. I highly recommend Sherlock Holmes on Screen; I just got it on Monday and already I have found out about a Sherlock appearance on BraveStarr (yes, that 80s cartoon) and several more shows/movies that I want to watch.

Barbara | 358 comments I just saw this older topic so I will add one - old, odd, probably not a favorite, and one I heard about on another Holmes site.
In the '70s they were thinking of doing either a Sherlock Holmes series or a series of TV movies based on classic detectives I don't know which. Anyway I don't think it got past the one - a version of The Hound of the Baskervilles with Stuart Granger as Sherlock Holmes, Bernard Fox as an okay Watson, and William Shatner - yup, The Shatner - as Stapleton.

Parmacendar I watched that one. Very weird, like watching a Star Trek/Holmes crossover.

Barbara | 358 comments I just came across this when I was surfing - apparently in the early '80s there was an 8 part miniseries called "Young Sherlock." This was a few years before Spielberg's "Young Sherlock Holmes", and it was produced by Granada, which produced the Jeremy Brett series years later.
Apparently, it follows a teenage Sherlock Holmes, and the season is subtitled "The Mystery of the Manor House". There were plans to produce a second season but it got scrapped. Have to see if this can be streamed somewhere.

Barbara | 358 comments In the Rank the Sherlocks topic there is a mention of Frank Langella. You can see on youtube (it is in segments) a filmed stage play of "Sherlock Holmes" with Langella as Holmes.
He is pretty good - a bit melodramatic but he is playing for the stage not for the small screen, and he has a little trouble with the accent, but nice touches of humor and he has one of the all time great voices.

J. Rubino (jrubino) | 317 comments In the 70s, the Royal Shakespeare Company did a revival of the Gillette play, "Sherlock Holmes", with John Wood, John Neville, Robert Stephens and Leonard Nimoy playing Holmes as the original production moved to Broadway and then went on tour. Wood was nominated for a Tony.
