Christopher Moore discussion

hey guys! I'm new to Christopher Moore... so new that I haven't read any of his books yet! But they sound super interesting. So my question is: where should I start? Do you guys have favs that would be good to start out with, or just favs in general? Or should I just start out with his earliest works?

I'd start with Lamb. If it doesn't hook you, nothing will.

I started with Stupidest Angel and that hooked me. I wished I had read Practical Demonkeeping and Lust Lizard before Angel though because there are crossover characters. It's not necessary to read any in order except Bloodsucking Fiends (first) and You Suck (second). Lamb is definitely one of his very best though! Have fun!

I read Lamb first and loved it-just hysterical. I think it is his best. After that I wanted to read them all and eventually did. They are all great. Have fun and be ready to be sucked in!

A Dirty Job got me hooked, and yes, there are cross over characters as Melissa said, but that didn't stop me from loving all of his books! Have fun reading.

I read either Lamb or Dirty Job first. And loved them both. I don't know which one of those is my favorite, but those are the top two to me. I also loved Bloodsucking Fiends and You Suck. But all of his books are so fabulous and quirky and hilarious. You will love them!

I started with A Dirty Job and it got me hooked. I have read all but You Suck and the Stupidest Angel (I have both in Audio books) and am re reading Lamb as an Ebook (I listened to the Audio book). I have not been disappointed by any of the books!

I started with Practical Demonkeeping, which I loved, but not nearly as much as the Bloodsucking Fiends/You Suck series... I read Dirty Jobs after that and it seemed that they should be read in that order... I still have a few of his left to read but I'm saving them :)

The first one I read was Lamb and that got me hooked. I have to say that that one is my favorite by far, although Dirty Job is a close second.

I started with Fluke, on a recommendation from a close friend, and was immediately in love with Moore. However, as you can probably tell from the rest of the this thread, I don't really think it matters where you start! Everything that Moore writes is awesome! The only caution I would give you is to make sure that you don't read a sequel by accident (make sure you read Practical Demonkeeping before Lust Lizard, Bloodsucking Fiends before You Suck and A Dirty Job...and I think that's it. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure, haha).

Anyway, personal recommendation: start with Island of the Sequined Love Nun - although Lamb is freakin' phenomenal, I think that that may be my favorite of his. Whatever you choose, you're sure to enjoy immensely! Have fun!

My husband said that Lamb comes before Stupidest Angel... though I haven't read either of those yet

Lamb, Lust Lizard and Island of the Sequined love nun ALL come before the stupidest angel. You don't have to read them before Angel to enjoy it though. But you miss the fond recognition that makes it more fun to re-discover old friends like Roberto...

I started with A Dirty Job, and it's still my favorite. You may miss some of the cameos of his old characters in it, but it's still a great read, and for me, it was just as fun to see those characters pop up in the older books.

I got started with Bloodsucking Fiends. It's still my favorite of his, but juuuuuuuust slightly behind is Lamb.

Stupidest Angel is also a joy to read. I read it before many others and got to meet Roberto for the first time. It was still enjoyable.

I started with Lamb on the recommendation of a friend. After that, I read them in order, even reading Lamb again and I liked them that way. Chris Moore has a way of threading his characters all through his story lines, so I rec to read them in order, even though bloodsucking fiends isn't his best.

Besides, you gotta read Bloodsucking fiends before Lust Lizard and both of those and Island before you read Stupidest Angle, just to get all the references.

I don't remember Bloodsucking Fiends being related to lust lizard in any way. Practical Demonkeeping was before lust lizard. Bloodsucking Fiends was the prequel to You Suck. I'm trying to remember any tie between the two and I can't?

I am a little ways into BSF right now, but I already read You Suck (grievous error, accidental, I blame it on the girl at the book store, haha) and I read both Practical Demonkeeping and Lust Lizard. I -think- that the connection hinted at above is Detective Rivera, who is actually from Practical Demonkeeping, if I remember correctly. Is he one of the two detectives in the vampire books? I am unsure, but that's my best guess, and had been a suspicion of mine before reading this thread, as well. Hope that helps!

Rivera is in almost all of his books as a bit part. He was in Practical Demonkeeping as well as the Vampire books, Dirty Jobs, and I think he shows up in Lust Lizard, though I'm not 100% on that one.

Hmmm.... I didn't remember Rivera being in Practical Demonkeeping, but that may be due to the fact that it was my least favorite of all them, so I just don't recall much from that one in general. I did really love Lust Lizard though, Molly cracks me up!

I thought Rivera was the undercover cop that was posing as the Drug Dealer. But I could be wrong, I read Practical Demonkeeping a long time ago.

I just read that part not a half hour ago. Rivera was undercover trying to buy drugs from The Breeze but happened upon a naked hungover Robert Masterson instead.

I'm loving this book so far! Even talked about planning a trip up to Big Sur to watch whales with my girlfriend.

If I could go back and do it again, I'd read in chronological order. I wish I had been able to meet all the characters in the order that they were introduced.

Glad you asked this question, I was wondering the same thing myself! Everyone around me is hooked on Moore, and I've even purchased some of his books. I got Lamb for my boyfriend for Christmas and still haven't read it myself. I am going to get on that!

A Dirty Job is by far my favorite. Lamb and Fluke are wonderful choices too.

I started with Bloodsucking fiends, then You suck now Dirty Job and it;s nice because you know what's going on and the stories make more sense that way I think.

Although my friend read You Suck first then Blood. Fiends and said it was still ok that way but she would have preferred to read them the other way around had she known they were going to all tie together.

I didn't care for Lamb much, it's still funny but I thought it was too long and drawn out in parts.

and I couldn't finish Fluke.. I skimmed through the last couple chapters just because I couldn't sit there and read it anymore.

Practical Demonkeeping was pretty good, not as good as the vampire books, and I want the Island of the Seq. Love nun and Lust Demon to go along with that one.

I have Coyote Blue & the Stupidest Christmas Angel to read after Dirty Job

I would say that you should start with what I call the trilogy. That would be Island of the Sequind love nun, than lust lizard of meloncholy cove, with last being stupidest angel.

i'd say, practical demonkeeping, lust lizard and the stupidest angel make a trilogy. island is a bit different, although it converges into the last part

Dirty Job was my first and still reigning favorite Christopher Moore book. Don't worry about the cameos - they may add extra enjoyment, but it doesn't take anything away from the story if you don't get them. Actually, I think it's just as fun realizing later on that a random character in Book X is the star of Book Y, etc.

Dirty Job is my favorite as well, but I wish I had read them in order. The recurring characters are great, and you will be glad you you get them all.

Hi all! My first Christopher Moore book was Stupidest Angel and I laughed my butt off! I only checked it out of my library on a hunch because I was actually looking for You Suck. The title caught my intrest only because I couldn't figure how anything with a title like that couldn't be picked up and read. I even turned my sister onto his books, and she never reads anything!

I read Fluke first which I liked but I just finished A Dirty Job, but Im not crazy about that book like everyone here seems to be. Wonder what that means for me liking his other books.

I would start with Lamb. It's easily his best work. Second one I read was Fluke. All of them are quick and fun but Lamb is a masterpiece.

I liked them all but Lamb is the most impressive achievement.
