Good Books
I beg to differ on the "boring" part. I don't think To Kill a Mockingbird is boring at all. I mean, it's not full of explosions or anything like that, but it is a very compelling story––both about racism and about coming-of-age.But yes, it is very good. One of my all-time favorites. :)
I still think it had too many lulls

The Book Thief is quite a good read, oh and for those of us who like graphic novels, there's of course The Complete Maus

THe Book Thief is an amazing book.

Clare is a good writer, but her inclusion of Sebastian was too late, the reveal wasn't as shocking, at least for me:p

Woolfie wrote: "Clare is a good writer, but her inclusion of Sebastian was too late, the reveal wasn't as shocking, at least for me:p"I thought Sebastian came in at about the right time, but I agree the reveal was kind of obvious. Of course, I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. Except for that the characters didn't really figure it out fast enough. I knew from like, the first second he showed up. XD
Yes, yes it is. After I read that book I just sat and stared at the wall for a while... It was pretty hard to digest. Haha.
Me, too! Had a strong impact on my thought-processes for a long while after reading it..And the fact that all the characters were so REAL is only a bonus. I could easily imagine all of them, and that is the sign of a veryvery good book, right?
At least, that's what I think.
I think you're absolutely right. Characters are the most important thing for me, whether I'm reading or writing. A book can be the best-written thing in the world, but if the characters are boring then I just can't enjoy the book. And when I'm writing I concentrate a lot more on creating realistic characters than I do on my writing style... A good story should be about relatable people.
Okay, looks like I should read the book thief...The Mortal Instruments-series is awesome! I couldn´t put them aside - but I think the 4th volum was unneseccary. I liked the ending of Ciry of Glass and now I have to wait for City of Souls. How mean.
What I read for a book club was The Handmaids Tale. You had to get used to the story and the writing style, but all in all it was very good - and haunting. It´s a dystopia a future world where woman are oppressed and just used as birth-machines. Talk about discrimination...
Yeah, I've read Handmaid's Tale. You're right, it IS very haunting. But I love how unsympathetic the whole story is, and how frank. As if the writer is saying, this is the world I've created. And I don't care if you like it or not, but I am not going to make it cutesy. It is brutal. So deal with it. That's cool.
I felt the same way about the fourth Mortal Instruments book. It was good, but rather unnecessary and kind of annoying.I've been meaning to read The Handmaid's Tale for a while...
Definitely read it! And I agree; The fourth MI book is totally unneccessary to the series-- and there are two more to come!
I enjoyed it, but only in a very passive way. It shouldn't have been published, end of. But then again, I'm sure that a lot of readers LOVED the book, so maybe it was just individual taste.
It´s totally worth your time. What impressed me the most, was how POSSIBLE all this sounds. With the terrorism-problem, with which the new government in The Handmaids Tale started, and the birth-rates going down... I´ll still read the 5th volume - because now I just have to know how it end. *sigh*
Marlene wrote: "It´s totally worth your time. What impressed me the most, was how POSSIBLE all this sounds. Most dystopias I can't bring myself to suspend my disbelief...
As long as it´s sci-fi you can read it like it does not concern you. When it´s something possible...
I LOVE PERCY JACKSON! (Books & character)
I mean, most people grew up with Harry Potter (which i'm also a fan of), but no, Percy's been MINE since i was eight years old!
And I have the same birthday as him, so.

Ditto.PJ for the win.
hahaha, I love how pj can also be pajamas lol..
But obviously PJs are also and equally for the win as PJ.
Still me. xDPercy Jackson is SO MUCH BETTER than Harry Potter. Who wants to read about wizards? I´m all for greek gods!
Just look at the last name and yor picture and everything´s clear. ;)No, I like him as well. Who doesn´t want to control an army of dead people? Though I think his life is pretty scary...
I have been looking at my list of non-existent character that I fangirl over and realised something. The main guys on my list: (In no order)
Fang from Maximum ride
Nico Di Angelo from PJ
Hades from Zelda c. wangs webcomic MYth
Anubis from The Kane Chronicles
L Lawliet from Death Note
etc...
See the distinct connection yet? I think I just found my type.
Marlene wrote: "Di ANGELO. Angel?By the way, I like the picture. :)"
OOOHH! I kinda find it funny that Nico's end name means 'Of Angels' Dont you?
Oh and thanks!
Oh, and no problem. I came across this picture pretty often by now, because I write about angels. Always thought it was cool.
Marlene wrote: "I only know Nico and L, so you have to fill me in."Fang looks like he could be Nico's older brother or something (expect he has wings). He even dresses similar and doesnt speak much.
Hades...Im not sure how to describe him but you can look it up on deviant art. Just write: Hades Zelda c. Wang.
And Anubis could also be described as being Nico's godly older brother.
They're all amazing. (In my opinion. Im a complete fangirl.)
Eh... as far as my dreamy fandom guys go, I'd have to say that mine mainly consist of:
-Percy Jackson
-Neville Longbottom
-James Potter I
-Remus Lupin
-The Doctor
-Finnick Odair
So you see, I'm mainly a fan of three book fandoms and one very amazing British science fiction...

I love Finnick! He´s amazing. Too sad...I´m re-reading The Hunger Games at the moment; in march there´ll be the movie - finally!
That was horrible. First: Where is the we-are-so-much-better-than-you attitude of the gods? there were so many worn out clichees, like the dad-son issue, that Hades is the bad guy - again, though I found especially this change in the books great. An, last but not least, Annabeth. She didn´t look and behave one little bit like Annabeth. And she definitely is not a smart-ass. She´s more like a warrior-queen. Clarisse-like. An what about these stupid pearls?!
You see, I didn´t like it either, mildly spoken. ;)
Okay, my father wants his laptop back and I ahev to go anyway. Good night/evening/whatever time it is in your region. ;)
Morning.
And I'm going to THG midnight. Thinking about going as Katniss... got the right hair/skin colour... but my sister and her friends are all going and representing a district, so I'm doing that.

I hated it also. They were supposed to be TWELVE in The Lightning Theif. They spoilt the WHOLE plot. I was so ashamed with how it turned out. (Im not going to go into a long rant about all the things they did wrong. It would take too long.)

However, Logan Lerman is shmexy.
That is all.

Oh, I used to love Fang but then... he got annoying in the third book. In fact, the books in general got annoying by the third book. x_x
I suppose I should make my list of wonderful male characters in YA books now. Okay, here goes. In no particular order.- Jack (Blood Red Road)
- Étienne St. Clair (Anna and the French Kiss)
- Percy Jackson (Percy Jackson... duh)
- Derek (Darkest Powers)
- Todd (Chaos Walking)
- Jace (Mortal Instruments)
- Will (Infernal Devices)
- Jem (Infernal Devices)
- Po (Graceling)
- Brigan (Fire)
- Max (The Book Thief)
- Atticus Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird ... OKAY I know he's the dad, but he is just so badass. And I love his name.)
