The first book of 2012 for our Nook Book of the Month Club is Divergent by Veronica Roth.

This is the description posted in Goodreads:
4.42 · rating details · 31,422 ratings · 7,154 reviews
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves… or it might destroy her.

Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.(less)

Hooray! Some romance and dystopia, all set in my home town area of Chicago! I can't wait for this to come up in my library queue!

Happy New Year, everyone!

Be sure to post any comments, thoughts, about the book in this discussion thread throughout the month. . . .

I read this a few months ago and really enjoyed it. It was actually different from all the other dysotopian/utopian societies that are so popular right now. Can't wait to hear other's thoughts as you read the book!

I read this a couple months ago and it was really good. The characters are awesome and the story is different from all the other books in this genre and was a refreshing change from the usual!

Jess (Bookish_Jess_) (jessmunk) | 1 comments I read this book when it first came out and I love it. I have to say I think its one of my favorite books, and I feel as if I've waited forever for the second book to be out.

Tracy Phillips Just started reading the book this morning. I am about 17 pages in and can't wait to see how it develops :o)

message 6: by Marcie (new)

Marcie | 29 comments I started on Tuesday and literally just finished. I'm still processing - it is a huge story to take in - but I can't wait to discuss!

Crystal (infiniteink) I just finished it. My initial thoughts on it are that, though it's not the most original, insightful book available, it's still well-written and compelling. I literally couldn't put it down. It was fairly predictable for me, but the intensity rippling through Tris still affected me. And it ended in the most perfect spot to make it impossible for me to not read the second book.

Desiree Taggard Very good book and a great way to start off a new year for the monthly books. I enjoyed the way that the story flowed and it didn't have any moments that I thought could have been cut. I can't wait for the next one.

KF (-kf-) I really liked this book as well. I'm happy that this was the book chosen for January. I also think it was a refreshing change from many books in this gere, and I LOVE it when a book surprises me like that. Keeps me excited about reading.

Danica | 14 comments This book got some negative reviews that I read. Also, for some reason, I did not care for Hunger Games, call me crazy. I loved this book! It was so deep, yet such an easy/quick read. I can't believe this is considered "YA" because it deals with some pretty serious subject matter. However, i disagree that it was very "different". It had all the elements of a typical utopian/dystopian. People being segregated, thinking it's great, then realizing it's not... surprise! A war!

I want to know what others think about what's beyond the wall? Why are they walled in? And Tris mentioned something about it being guarded from the inside?

message 16: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I enjoyed this book quite a bit. While I liked the Hunger Games trilogy, I felt that the disparity between the districts and the city was oddly comical. In Divergent, I felt that the dystopian society was more believable. Yes, it was a bit predictable and canned, but still an interesting read.
