Hi, Kristine! I like your ideas. Let's talk about the new Newbery when it comes out. Do they give the award in March? If so, maybe we could discuss it in April or May so we have time to get it from the library? I haven't been doing well at all at keeping up with goodreads, even though I love it. I hope to do better in 2012. Remind me where you are in VA again? Randy grew up in Reston. Love, Dawn
They announce a new Newbery on January 23. Do you think that's enough time?
p.s. We are in Southwestern Virginia near Blacksburg.

Let's try for March and hope it's enough time. I would say that I envy your southern warmth, but actually it's been amazingly warm in IA. I know it's all relative, but I can't complain because we've had no snow yet and it's been in the 40's in December and January! My kids were sad not to have a white Christmas, but I'm from CA, so I loved the sunny skies. Actually, it's supposed to snow tonight--we'll see. Also, I just got back from a trip to see my parents in CA where the temperature was in the 70's, so I tried to store it all up to last me through this winter. It's the first time I've taken a trip on my own since having kids 15 years ago! We missed each other, but it was kinda fun. :)
Wow! Good for you Dawn! How long was your trip?I'm really excited about getting started and to me March seems like kind of a long time to wait. I kind of lost my steam last year, but I'm ready and raring to go now!
Hi, Annette! I was gone for a week. It worked out because Randy didn't have to go back to work until Jan 11. Well, he still had work to do, but he didn't have to start teaching classes again until then. So I returned Jan 10. Randy was able to work prepping his classes during the day while the kids were at school, but then be home by 3:00 when they got home. How are you and your family doing? I've been thinking about you and we need to catch up! :)Annette wrote: "Wow! Good for you Dawn! How long was your trip?

How am I doing? Well, that's kind of hard to answer in just a few words but I'll give it a try. We've had our share of struggles these last couple of years, but we're alive and kicking. Yes, we do need to catch up!
Do you have to add a new shelf to activate the challenge? I already have a newbery shelf and when I put in a goal for the challenge and listed my all ready existing newbery shelf, nothing happened.
Hi - I'm new. Since I work with a Mock Newbery group of middle school kids, I plan to start reading 2012 books in March. The kids start in April. We just chose "our" winners last night, so I'm on strike from reading anything else until March 1. But I can certainly discuss books published in 2011 until then.

Kathy, you shouldn't need a new shelf, I used my existing shelf called 'newbery-challenge' and it worked for me. Let me look into it . . .

I used my existing "newbery-honor" shelf and it worked. You shouldn't need to add a new one if you already have one where you will put books that work for the challenge. It will count any book you add to that shelf within the dates of the challenge, so it's up to you to make sure you only add books that fit the challenge.
Kathy, try it one more time, and if it doesn't work I'll report it to support and have them look at your profile and see if they can figure it out.

I had to click around to find the link to the challenge page, but it shows who is signed up for the challenge and their goals and progress:

it doesn't look like it registered you. have you tried a second time?

Kathy wrote: "Okay, now I did and it seemed to work. do I need to hit Update my entry?"
hmm, I think it you hit update it will take you in and let you change your goal. I looked at it and you are there and it's working. I'm glad it worked.

Also, Goodreads now has the ability for groups to create a challenge for group members. If you'd like to join, please go ahead and make a goal for yourself of how many Newbery books you'd like to read this year and we can track all of our progress on our group page. There are more details on that post. Go to the group page for more info.
