What is the best book you have ever read?

message 2: by Lisa (new)

Lisa James (sthwnd) Oh my, that's a toughie, but...Gone With the Wind :) It's my guilty pleasure :)

message 3: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth That is a tough choice - mine is To Kill a Mockingbird. I loved both the book and the movie.

I'm not sure I can choose... but The Lord of the Rings was the book that really got me interested in reading and since the first time I read it when I was 8, I have reread it at least once every year.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I could never chhose just one book. Suffice it to say Ethan Frome is on this list, Gone with the Wind, Exodus, Winds of War and War and Remembrance and As the Crow Flies and Kane and Abel, Madame Bovary and hundreds more.

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) This is really hard. If I had to pick one I'd say A Harry the Dirty Dog Treasury: Three Stories by Gene Zion. It may not have been the first book I ever read, but it's the one that I first started reading by myself, over and over.

The Count of Monte Cristo, hands down! :)
But Lord of the Rings is a close runner up. I'm starting a reread of it at the end of the month, can't wait!

The Dogs of Babel by Carolyn Parkhurst. It's not great literary fiction, but the beautiful love story and the presence of the dog enraptured me.

Carl I don't know that I could put that label on any particular book. I've read so many good ones. The one that I studied the deepest (college course) was "The Lords of Discipline" by Pat Conroy. The one that scared me the most was Stephen King's "Salem's Lot" (but that had more to do with the events at the time of the reading than the actual writing). A book that had a huge impact on my life recently was "What's So Amazing About Grace" by Philip Yancey.

Mine too, Elizabeth; my favourite all-time book and movie.

I agree with you about The Lords of Discipline and 'Salem's Lot.

Catherine (puddingduck) | 7 comments The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. Doesn't get any better than that.

message 17: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) I'm still going with...A Harry The Dirty Dog Treasury: Three Stories...I can honestly say I've read it more times than any other book, all before I turned 7.

Holly Gatchell | 1 comments I can not choose just one book because there are three that will always stick out in my mind! 1) Beach Music by Pat Conroy 2) Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnely 3) Gone With The Wind

message 19: by Lisa (new)

Lisa James (sthwnd) I haven't read Fountainhead yet, it's in the pile on my nightstand to be read. Looking forward to it :) I loved To Kill A Mockingbird, loved the LOTR/Hobbit books, will agree with Hound of the Baskervilles being my favorite Holmes book, read Ethan Frome as well as Madame Bovary, Salem's Lot, & Tea Rose :) Looks like a lot of us are eclectic readers! I will say though, that without the 1001 challenge list, there are books I would never have discovered on my own. I will add Isabel Allende as a "new' favored author. I've read the majority of the books that she has on the list. I like Paul Auster too, have read 2 of his now & looking forward to reading more of his that are on the list.
