Charley Davidson - Darynda Jones
I don't know that I have read any reaper books before unless you count the Incarnations of Immortality by Piers Anthony.I have been telling eveyone to read this series. It is my newest favorite. I can hardly wait for the next one. In fact it seems I have pre-ordered it twice now....LOL.
Ooooo, it's sounds like they're great. I'e been hearing nothing but great stuff about this series. I keep trying to read Reaper books, but they just don't seem to work out for me.
I love this series...The protagonist reminds me a lot of Stephanie Plum. I finished the first book in about a day and now I'm on to the second. Very funny reads.
I loved this book! I love the heroine's dry humor and how she uses sarcasm to deal with her uniqueness! Although it can be a bit corny, I found myself laughing quite a bit at the dialogue! This series is a new fave for me too!
Loved these books and I wish it was an ongoing series instead of just the three. I will confess that I got them from the library though and did not buy them in hardcover as they came out, but will buy the mass market paper for my 'library'.
This is one of my fav series.... I love Charley and all her friends and can't wait for the next installment. Another one of my fav authors recommended this series and I am happy I listened.... And for those who listen to audiobooks, Lorelei King does an amazing job portraying Charley and her comedy!!
Love Book 1 & 2 - They are fantastic. I have reviewed both books on my blog and here on Goodreads.FYI - I'm giving away an audio copy of Second Grave On The Left on my blog:

I'm super excited to read this book. I have not read a reaper book before and this one sounds like it is a book I will really enjoy.
I liked First Grave....and consumed I mean read it in a day. The take on the "reaper" is one that I have not experienced before and was a great spin. The only thing I didn't really like about the novel was the seemingly huge cast of characters. I found some of the side plots and characters were not allowed to fully develop but maybe they are featured more in the next books in the series?
I just started, I'm enjoying it so far. I can't think of too many other books with reapers in them. Just the Alex Craft novels (Death is definitely yummy) and the Soul Screamer novels (but I've only read the first book in that one. It does have Todd though, and he's a reaper.) Oh wait, and I read Black Wings about an Angel of Death. That was really good. Hmmm, I never thought about it, but maybe I like reaper books. LOL
“I went down like a drunken cowgirl trying to line dance to Metallica.” “I may not look like much, but I'm an expert at pretending to be a ninja.” This one I should make my motto - a middle-aged overweight woman trying to sneak around corners and make ninja moves.

I so loved this book...and funny I was in histrionics and could not put this book down.....it was everything I look for in a book
Heather wrote: "I love this series...The protagonist reminds me a lot of Stephanie Plum. I finished the first book in about a day and now I'm on to the second. Very funny reads."I actually thought Darynda Jones was a pseudonym for Evanovich. Oh well, I love both series(es?) so I won't complain.
In order for me to really and truly love a book, I need a good main character that has attitude and a fair amount of sarcasm (Charley, Davidson, Stephanie Plum, Celia Graves, Cat....). Charley defines what I want in a heroine.
And it has EVERYTHING. Action, humor, sexy... LOVE IT! I read an advanced copy a while ago but I definitely need to read these again.
I also saw the Stephanie Plum similarities as well as some of the similarities to Betsy Taylor. It took me two days to read it because my children had to eat :) While I liked the book a lot, I found myself not really understanding the relationship between Reyes and Charley. I actually went back and read it again. I still don;t understand.
I already had number two on reserve hoping she will get with Garrett. Him I think I can understand.
I just finished my first Stephanie Plum book and loved it so now I'm gonna have to read First Grave.

Which series is Betsy Taylor in?
MaryJanice Davidson's Undead Series.I read them all in a week. The last 2 were horrible but I read them too.
I hate to ruin the love-fest but I was on the fence about this book. I liked the world and plot, but I found Charley kind of annoying. I love a good sarcastic female lead, but she had a few too many cheesy lines for me and I often found her immature. Maybe it was because I was listening to the audio and I wasn't a fan of the narrator.
One of my Goodfriends said the same thing and she read the book. Usually her and I are in sync. So it's not just you Sandra.
OK good, always nice to know it isn't just me! I did just start the second book and while is she still sarcastic I'm finding it less obnoxious and more funny, I guess she's growing on me!
Heather wrote: "I love this series...The protagonist reminds me a lot of Stephanie Plum. I finished the first book in about a day and now I'm on to the second. Very funny reads."which series is Stephanie plum? I can't seem to find it
Sandra wrote: "I hate to ruin the love-fest but I was on the fence about this book. I liked the world and plot, but I found Charley kind of annoying. Okay, January is over and I still haven't finished this book, while I enjoy certain aspects of it--the voice is great though agree with Sandra and Azrella that sometimes the author pushes too hard to make Charley funny. And when I first started I thought it was great, but after the first few chapters I found I could only take the book in small chunks because I keep wanting to throw it across the room. (Which I'm resisting as it is a kindle book. lol) My huge problem is under the spoiler tag. (view spoiler)
Kira wrote: "I HATE HATE HATE the Ryese thing"Agreed. I just don't get the attraction, and a word of warning, it does not get any better with respect to that in the next book (in my opinion). Although I do find Charley less annoying in Second Grave on the Left.
I just received
from Amazon. I can hopefully get to it this month - too many library books coming due.
Carolyn F. wrote: "I just received

I am so happy that I took part in the Jan group read because first grave on the right was just an awesome read and is now one of my favourite books.
I read this book upon seeing it as the BOM for January. I did like the book and I enjoyed the idea of the Grim Reaper and how she was able to help others while solving her crimes. But, even though I understand that she uses her sarcasm to cover her pain and put up walls, it got to be too much sometimes. It almost seemed like the author was trying too hard to put snarkiness in every paragraph where Charley was speaking/thinking. I did enjoy many of her one liners, that's for sure though. That being my only real problem with the story, I will definitely be reading the next one. I was hoping to pick it up at the bookstore yesterday, but found that they didn't have the mass market paperback out yet. I have a hard time shelling out that kind of money for a book when I read sooooooo many. So, I think I'm off to the library today.
I agree with those that said that the sarcasm in the book was a bit over the top. The author was just trying too hard. It would have been a lot funnier if she had dialed it down a little bit. But I liked the ending and will continue reading this series. It's just not on the top of my list...
Read the first 20 pages and she was trying to hard. I like humor that flows, maybe I'll come back to it in a little bit.
I was not terribly impressed by the first book in the series but I am almost finished the second and I am finding it much more enjoyable. Glad I didn't give up on the series.
Kilgallen wrote: "I was not terribly impressed by the first book in the series but I am almost finished the second and I am finding it much more enjoyable. Glad I didn't give up on the series."I agree, the second book was much better for me - though sometimes I think the author challenges herself to see just how many snarky and sarcastic comments she can cram into one page. I still think her books would be better if she dialed it back just a tiny bit.
