Charriza I'm finishing Blindness by José Saramago, but I'm already itching for a good zombie book to start off the year. A friend of mine recommended Feed by Mira Grant. Have any of you fellow zombie fans read this book? If not, do you guys have any recommendations? Thank you in advance! :)

*Suzy (ereaderuser)* (suzyereaderuser) In my opinion Feed is one of the best. I also loved Dead Living by Glenn Bullion.

Kat (katzombie) | 15 comments Dead Living is really good, I enjoyed it!

Charriza Thanks guys! I'll check it out :)

Nichola | 1 comments Yes, I second the Newsflesh series. I cannot wait for the last book.

Alexis Winning | 43 comments I JUST finished it! I'd recommend it for sure, but it's definitely not about zombies; they provide more of an atmosphere than anything. Are you looking for more action, or something though provoking?

Leilani I really enjoyed, As the World Dies (trilogy) by Rhiannon Frater.

message 9: by Charriza (new) - added it

Charriza I will definitely check these out. I just added the first book in the Newsflesh series.

@Alexis: Hm, I guess a little bit of both I'd lean more towards thought provoking.

Thanks guys!! :D

Alexis Winning | 43 comments I just started reading Pontypool Changes Everything, and it is magnificently beautiful. I also really enjoyed Zombie Apocalypse!, it's a anthology of diary style entries, but all tell the same story through different points of view. Also the Autumn series by David Moody. Charriza, I found it useful to peek through some members book lists :)

Kevin Walsh | 47 comments It depends what kind of stories you are looking for, I have read my fair share of zombie novels.

If you are looking for a well rounded, action packed and raw story: I'd go with Eden By Tony Monchinski. The characters are excellent and the dialogue is some of the best dialogue I've ever seen. It's the closest thing to a perfect zombie novel I've ever come across.

Domain of the dead and Remains of the dead by Iain McKinnon are intelligent zombie novels and very well written.

The Autumn series by David Moody is solid if you're not looking for a gore-fest: it focuses more on the mental trials survivors must go through in order to survive.

If you like a raw story with a bit of a fantasy mix: I'd advise the Monster Island trilogy by David Wellington, the writing style is unique and energetic, and the story is very creatively plotted.

If you like a story about emotion and character growth: go with Rot and Ruin and Dust and Decay by the one and only Jonathan Maberry. I just received my copy of Dust and Decay in the mail and I can't wait to dive into it, Rot and Ruin was a near perfect zombie novel. I also ordered a copy of his zombie novel, Dead of night, which I have heard nothing but good things about.

If you're looking for stories with good characters and some good overall fun: I'd go with the Zombie Fallout series by Mark Tufo and The White flag of the dead series by Joseph Talluto.

Hope that helps, I've read quite a few zombie novels and I know its hard to find a good one sometimes.

Ashleigh (plathheart84) I enjoyed Zombie Britannica by Thomas Emson. Im a bit of a newbie to the zombie genre though. I have added a lot of these recommendations to my to read list thanks guys :D

Jack Wallen (jack_wallen) | 16 comments I have read Feed. It's good. It got a bit bogged down toward the end, but it's certainly well worth the read. You should also try Day By Day Armageddon.

Charriza Thanks guys!! :D

Sara (bluesarat) | 464 comments As previously mentioned I second that Feed and Deadline are excellent,The rot and ruin and dust and decay by Jonathan maberry are too,one of the best I have read is Rise Again by Ben Tripp, try Rhiannon Fraters series and just finished the first part of new series Ashes by Ilsa Bick..excellent!

I cannot wait to get a copy of Pontypool and read it. Santa didn't bring it to me but that's cool. I'm getting anyways. Neener, neener Santa!

Alexis Winning | 43 comments Jaz, it's SO delicious! It's absurd, so you definitely have to be in the right mindset. I love that kind of stuff, thought it may not be everyone's cup of tea.

I put Day By Day Armageddon in my zombie novel Top Five. Had some humor, plenty of action and you got to care about the characters. Was more than just the Undead chomping on folks.

I hear there's a BBC production out there, or maybe a full-on feature film. I dunno the specifics but I'm wiling to find out. Thanks, Alexis! :O)

Alexis Winning | 43 comments It's a Canadian feature film :) It was on one night, and I of course had to watch...it's always so exciting when I come upon a new zombie movie I've never seen!

The film and book are VERY different though. The film is much less absurd, and more coherent. They are definitely 2 different entities but both pretty darn awesome!

message 21: by Jaz (new)

Jaz | 56 comments Pretty darn awesome is my middle name. Er, well it would be if I could have it my way. :o) Sweet! I'm so excited for reading and seeing both versions. Yay!

Jessica (frellathon) Zombies Don't Cry is great. My fave is Reapers Are The Angels.

Jim | 219 comments Mod
I've seen the Pontypool movie as well. Its on netflix (streaming only) and my son and I watched it over the holidays. It was pretty decent though hearing it is more coherent than the book makes me a little worried about reading the book. My son and I were playing some games so we weren't giving the movie our full attention so maybe it would have been easier to follow if it had our undivided attention. Didn't realize it was a book too.

David P Forsyth (daidpforsyth) | 352 comments I'd would recommend Voyage of the Dead (Book 1 of the Sovereign Spirit Saga). The teaser got good reviews last month and the full version was released today on Kindle at http://www.amazon.com/Voyage-Dead-Sov... It's about survivors on a ship during the zombie apocalypse, contrasted with a sub-plot about survivors ashore. It's more of a sci-fi adventure than strictly horror: Plenty of blood and guts, but the threats posed by survivors and the government almost outweigh those of the zombies. I think it's a great story, but I wrote it (and I hope I'm not violating any rules by mentioning my own book here). However, since today is the release date, I hope some members of this group will be interested...

On the other hand, if my book doesn't float your boat, try Tooth and Nail by Craig DiLouie. It was one of the best zombie books I read last year.

No Easy Hope (James Cook) and What Zombies Fear (Kirk Allmond) were also good indie Kindle books. There are many other indie zombie books that I would NOT recommend. However, I must say that discovering the indie Kindle market of low cost zombie and sci-fi books last year is what spurred me to write my own books. I remember reading a poorly written 99 cent zombie book and saying to myself, "I could do a lot better than this!" So regardless of how it turns out for me, I need to thank the bad authors who motivated me.

Simon Neilson (simonneilson) | 4 comments If you are looking for a zombie/apocalyptic novella you could try The Apocalypse Room

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Apocalyps...

The reviews are good.

Jessica (frellathon) Has anyone read The Infection by Craig DiLouie? It's got to be my new fave zombie read. Loved it.

Simon Neilson (simonneilson) | 4 comments Great read Jessica.

message 29: by Char (new) - added it

Char I would definitely recommend Dead of Night: A Zombie Novel. It has a few real twists in it.

message 30: by David P (new) - added it

David P Forsyth (daidpforsyth) | 352 comments Voyage of the Dead and Flotilla of the Dead are the first two books in a new series offering a different perspective on the zombie apocalypse. If you are looking for the best place to ride out the end of the world, this just might be it.
Each book is over 100,000 words for $2.99 on Kindle.

Kristin (Blood,Sweat and Books) (goodreadscomhermyoni) | 274 comments It's not out for a month or so but I can assure you, Last Bastion of The Living is something your going to want to pick up.

message 32: by Angela (new)

Angela Hasting (italianboogie) | 2 comments Mark Tufo's Zombie Fallout series is pretty good. Five books in the series and more to come.

Sara (bluesarat) | 464 comments Loved theThe Infection preferred it to Tooth and Nail..and there is a sequel just released on kindle

message 35: by Jessica (new) - added it

Jessica (frellathon) Last Bastion of The Living I suspect will be great just got a review copy and The Infection was excellent, I have the sequel and can't wait to get to it. I'm wanting Tooth and Nail as well though.

Craig (azeryk) Quite enjoyed Feed and it's sequel Deadline so am looking forward to the final book of the series.

Have to mentioned Jonathan Maberry's Rot & Ruin series and I have loved them so far; as well as his stand alone Dead of Night: A Zombie Novel.

I quite enjoyed Brian Keene's The Rising and City of the Dead but as they are not your everyday traditional zombies I get why some don't like them as much.

Other good ones are Zombie Britannica and Blood Crazy.

Aaron | 3 comments Day by Day Armageddon Origin to Exile. Couldn't put this book down. It is now one of my favorite zombie books and looking forward to the release of the 3rd one in the series.

I loved Zombie britannica! It seems to get a bit overlooked.

Craig (azeryk) I'm not sure why it's so easily over-looked, it's a good book and usually gets good ratings and reviews.

Jason Scott | 1 comments I'd second the Monster series by Wellington. Among the Living by Long. And of course, the Shift of the Dead series by me ;)

Kristin (Blood,Sweat and Books) (goodreadscomhermyoni) | 274 comments I definitely have to add The Forest of Hands and Teeth.

Ashleigh (plathheart84) Kristin (Blood,Sweat and Books) wrote: "I definitely have to add The Forest of Hands and Teeth."

I just recently finished "The forest of hands & teeth" and I was so disappointed. It was just chick lit with a couple of zombies thrown in. Nothing that I wanted from a zombie novel at all :(

message 44: by Jessica (new) - added it

Jessica (frellathon) I had that exact reaction Ashleigh it was not what I expected and what I got was less that satisfactory.

I think because I knew I was in the mood for an action packed zombie novel I should have gone for something else, under different circumstances I may have enjoyed it but it just wasn't what I needed at the time if that makes sense?!

Ricky | 19 comments Chemical Z has some love as well as quite a bit of anger and zombies. It's not just blood and guts, although the nasty bits are in there too.

Available in paperback

or eBook

The second installment is on its way....
