@Alexis: Hm, I guess a little bit of both I'd lean more towards thought provoking.
Thanks guys!! :D

If you are looking for a well rounded, action packed and raw story: I'd go with Eden By Tony Monchinski. The characters are excellent and the dialogue is some of the best dialogue I've ever seen. It's the closest thing to a perfect zombie novel I've ever come across.
Domain of the dead and Remains of the dead by Iain McKinnon are intelligent zombie novels and very well written.
The Autumn series by David Moody is solid if you're not looking for a gore-fest: it focuses more on the mental trials survivors must go through in order to survive.
If you like a raw story with a bit of a fantasy mix: I'd advise the Monster Island trilogy by David Wellington, the writing style is unique and energetic, and the story is very creatively plotted.
If you like a story about emotion and character growth: go with Rot and Ruin and Dust and Decay by the one and only Jonathan Maberry. I just received my copy of Dust and Decay in the mail and I can't wait to dive into it, Rot and Ruin was a near perfect zombie novel. I also ordered a copy of his zombie novel, Dead of night, which I have heard nothing but good things about.
If you're looking for stories with good characters and some good overall fun: I'd go with the Zombie Fallout series by Mark Tufo and The White flag of the dead series by Joseph Talluto.
Hope that helps, I've read quite a few zombie novels and I know its hard to find a good one sometimes.

I cannot wait to get a copy of Pontypool and read it. Santa didn't bring it to me but that's cool. I'm getting anyways. Neener, neener Santa!

I put Day By Day Armageddon in my zombie novel Top Five. Had some humor, plenty of action and you got to care about the characters. Was more than just the Undead chomping on folks.

I hear there's a BBC production out there, or maybe a full-on feature film. I dunno the specifics but I'm wiling to find out. Thanks, Alexis! :O)

The film and book are VERY different though. The film is much less absurd, and more coherent. They are definitely 2 different entities but both pretty darn awesome!

I've seen the Pontypool movie as well. Its on netflix (streaming only) and my son and I watched it over the holidays. It was pretty decent though hearing it is more coherent than the book makes me a little worried about reading the book. My son and I were playing some games so we weren't giving the movie our full attention so maybe it would have been easier to follow if it had our undivided attention. Didn't realize it was a book too.

On the other hand, if my book doesn't float your boat, try Tooth and Nail by Craig DiLouie. It was one of the best zombie books I read last year.
No Easy Hope (James Cook) and What Zombies Fear (Kirk Allmond) were also good indie Kindle books. There are many other indie zombie books that I would NOT recommend. However, I must say that discovering the indie Kindle market of low cost zombie and sci-fi books last year is what spurred me to write my own books. I remember reading a poorly written 99 cent zombie book and saying to myself, "I could do a lot better than this!" So regardless of how it turns out for me, I need to thank the bad authors who motivated me.

The reviews are good.

Each book is over 100,000 words for $2.99 on Kindle.

Have to mentioned Jonathan Maberry's Rot & Ruin series and I have loved them so far; as well as his stand alone Dead of Night: A Zombie Novel.
I quite enjoyed Brian Keene's The Rising and City of the Dead but as they are not your everyday traditional zombies I get why some don't like them as much.
Other good ones are Zombie Britannica and Blood Crazy.

I loved Zombie britannica! It seems to get a bit overlooked.

I just recently finished "The forest of hands & teeth" and I was so disappointed. It was just chick lit with a couple of zombies thrown in. Nothing that I wanted from a zombie novel at all :(

That's a bummer, I really loved that whole series.

I think because I knew I was in the mood for an action packed zombie novel I should have gone for something else, under different circumstances I may have enjoyed it but it just wasn't what I needed at the time if that makes sense?!
