I'm only a little over 100 pages into Stardust, but I am really enjoying it. I was not familiar with Neil Gaiman before seeing Coraline (the movie) and this is the first book of his that I've read.
So I don't know if the lyrical, beautifully descriptive way of this book is his normal style.. really nice story telling here :)
is anyone else reading it yet?
graphic in what way? so far, the way Gaiman has described the cities, forests, creatures and people, etc. really enables the reader to 'see' what he's describing. so if by graphic you mean in a visual way, than yes.there have been a couple of swear words, and I've noticed the witches aren't very nice in this story (but they rarely are nice, right?).. but not anything graphic as in true violence and no vulgar, sexual overtones either.

I read this book a few years ago ( A little while before the movie came out but before I actually saw the movie) I don't remember it being too graphic (sexually speaking). There is a part when two characters have sex but I don't remember it being too descriptive. I am sorry if I am wrong...
actually ... there was a bit of a sexy scene just a few pages ago. 3 or 4 lines in a short paragraph in all. I don't know that I'd label it as graphic per se, as it read in the same lyrically, descriptive way the book is written in I didn't even focus on it when I was reading it. It wasn't nasty or pornographic in my opinion though. though now that I think about it, I wonder what age the book is geared toward. I suppose it might not be totally suitable for readers under 15 (not sure if that'll be the only scene like that or if there will be more). I'll definitely have to remember this when I go to do my review :)
hmm.. I've now read a few of the reviews about it here on goodreads and from the sounds of it, there may be some darker things happening in the story ahead. At this point, I'm totally invested in the characters and interested in seeing where it goes... and have enjoyed it so far. So I'm definitely continuing on :)
Also from the reviews, I think it's geared to YA/Adult... and apparently it's described as an 'adults fairytale'.
Just read the last page! I reeeally liked this book!! It's certainly NOT a young childs' fairytale (it *does* contain a few rather unfairytale-like happenings -when compared to a true childs fairytale book) ... but it has everything a great fairytale *should* have. A hero, a damsel in distress, witches, foes, friends, fairy godmother/s and mystical beings.
well, maybe not so much the stereotypical fairy godmother - but characters that intuitively and magically help Tristran in very positive ways.
Does the book have the same premise? I mean that he's looking for a part of a star for someone who doesn't even like him? And then he crosses this like boundary to go find it?
yes. He's in love with a girl who doesn't feel the same way in return. As they're walking one evening she sees a falling star. He promises to bring her that star in return for a kiss - she promises him 'anything he desires' if he brings it to her(she's thinking "no way this guy can do it") So Tristran takes off on the quest to find and return that fallen star to his beloved.. and he starts by going through the gap in the wall that leads to the land of fairy.Honestly, I reeeeally enjoyed the book. it wasn't anything that I expected, but I'm not even sure what is was I was expecting LOL so it was really nice to find I liked it so much :)
Okay so it was exactly like the premise of the movie! I like that. I hope the movie doesn't differ to much with the book because I don't think I'll be able to get into it as much. I completely forgot about the girl from the beginning at the end. She completely slipped my mind. Did the same thing happen to you?
It did and I just started. I'm liking it so far. I forgot about the father's story in the beginning.
Finished Stardust. I really like it. Didn't like his name. In the movie it was Tristan so that's what I called him in my head. It was pretty amusing that he had one cat ear. I have to say I liked the book more because it showed more love between Yvaine and Tristan. I don't remember the epilogue. I think he was made into a star when he died. The movie was more entertaining. And I don't think it was because I saw it first.
I definitely want to see the movie now. I'm hoping to find it on the 'cheap cuz it's old' shelf at the thrift shop or somewhere LOL
