Carro Finished The Summer Tree and now onto The Wandering Fire. A question occurred to me about what happens to some of the characters in the series. If you haven't read The Summer Tree yet, then it is something of a SPOILER.

In The Summer Tree there are several personal sacrifices. Not people dying in battle (that happens too) but people deciding to sacrifice themselves. This continues in The Wandering Fire.
I am referring to
1. Ysanne the Seer and her sacrificing herself forever to give Kim the knowledge she needs to be an effective Seer
2. Paul on the Summer Tree.

I cannot immediately think of other books where this calculated (though in no way cold) decision is made by a character, that they should die for the good of all. You do get people saying "Go on, I'll stay behind and guard the pass" in the heat of battle, but not anything quite this measured.

Can anyone think of equivalents in other books?

Susana The Fionavar Tapestry is one of my favourite trilogy's ever. And you're right ,there really are several personal sacrifices throughout the three books.
There's a book called " Elphame's choice" by P.C. Cast, where in the end - and now i'm giving spoilers_ Elphame has to die to save a race of winged creatures.
But she doesn't actually die, she just becomes a little diferent, so that probably doesn't count.

Carro Not (yet) read Elphame's Choice.

When Elphame makes her choice, does she think she is going to die? I think if so, then it really does count.
And depending on what sort of different it is, I think that should count too. Suddenly becoming different is a pretty big hit, and you have to live with it and the effect of it on people you know as well. In long term effects it could almost be worse than dying if your whole life goes weird on you.

Susana Yes, considering your point of view, it could probably be worse.
