Brigid ✩ I saw Tenebris suggested this topic and I don't think it was ever created. So, here it is.

Do you think schools should require school uniforms? And/or how strict should dress codes in schools be? Or should kids be allowed to wear whatever they want to wear?

message 2: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (Forever_Alone_Wolf) They can be strict as they want with shirts and shorts or whatever. But shoes, socks and other things should a choice of your own. If they take away shirts and skirts, shorts or pants or whatever, then let us have whatever else we want on.

But the one small thing is, no uniform causes bullying. The more popular kids would make it hard for the not as popular kids and maybe they can't afford such nice clothing or only wear it for special times like weddings.

Clothing is a form of expression thus should protected under the first amendment, as long as someone isn't naked, shirtless, or just in underwear during school I don't care what you wear.

message 4: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ That's a good point. Since the Constitution gives us freedom of expression, it makes sense that we should be able to wear what we want to wear. And most likely, people would not be going to school naked or in stripper outfits.

But Raven also has a good point. Uniforms might prevent bullying, sexual harassment, etc.

I would rather be able to wear what I want and be possibly a target of bullying then deal with a school uniform, besides I would probably find a school uniform uncomfortable which would be very distracting in my school day.

message 6: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ I would also rather be able to choose what I wear. Although personally, I don't think I wear anything that would evoke bullying ...

But yeah, the way uniforms are regulated can be rather ridiculous. My mom always tells me this story about how, when she was in high school, she got a detention once for her shirt being "3/4 tucked in and 1/4 tucked out or something like that." I think she still has the detention slip. XD

I hate having my shirt tucked in, I hate wearing a tie, and I hate being told what to wear... I would hate school uniforms... I wear jeans/shorts and a t-shirt with a sweater weather pending. That's pretty much it.

Thank you. Its true. Someone may call the person a slut or something.

message 9: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (Forever_Alone_Wolf) That is a good point. Wow, that sucks! This year I got these awesome black boots, but now we only can wear solid black shoes or white or boot shoes, whatever they're called. That is true, they cost a lot.

message 10: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (Forever_Alone_Wolf) Yes, that's true.

message 11: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (Forever_Alone_Wolf) I like them because of bullying.

message 12: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (Forever_Alone_Wolf) Yeah, that makes sense.

message 13: by ARTPOP (new)

ARTPOP | 152 comments It should be your choise. But if everyone came to school looking like gangsters would you like it?

message 14: by ARTPOP (new)

ARTPOP | 152 comments Well that is true aleph. I guess it is steriotypical. But it would be wierd. I guess I wouldnt mind that much.

message 15: by ARTPOP (new)

ARTPOP | 152 comments Well thats true because people can be jelouse of your hair, bags, coats etc

message 16: by ARTPOP (new)

ARTPOP | 152 comments yep!

message 17: by ARTPOP (new)

ARTPOP | 152 comments School uniforms are good because if you come in your own clothes you will have to pay a fortune each year because if you rip it or stain it you'll need new clothes. If there was no uniform how would you know that a strainger came in. The person will look like everyone else!

message 18: by ARTPOP (new)

ARTPOP | 152 comments Thats right

message 19: by ARTPOP (new)

ARTPOP | 152 comments But still it is a good idea this uniform.

message 20: by ARTPOP (new)

ARTPOP | 152 comments But uniform dosn't let you express who you are.

message 21: by Stevie (last edited Jan 19, 2012 12:32PM) (new)

Stevie (stevie_l) I went to a school with a uniform from 5th-8th grade and I personaly didn't mind. I didn't like it but I didn't hate it either. It was easy to get up and get dressed without any fuss. Middle school had non uniform days every monday and elementary school had it the first monday of every month. We didn't have a strict uniform; green/blue sweater, white polo, blue pants/shorts/skirt. Other than that you could wear what ever socks, hair accessories, jewelry, or shoes you wanted. But then we got a new principal in my last year and everything was made really strict, we were told what we could wear down to hair ties and types of shoes.

my current school doesn't have a uniform and it's nice to shirts of my favorite bands and books but I pretty much wear my own personal uniform anyways; t shirt, jeans, and a hoodie. I think I'm in the minority with not minding about wearing uniforms, many of my friends are so happy to be able to wear what ever (withing dress code) that they want. I'm just not into fashion at all.

My biggest issue with uniforms are how expensive they can be.

I find it amusing when people use the "it takes time to put together an outfit" excuse -- personally, I set out my clothing the night before, so when I wake up it's right next to my bedside :-P

message 23: by Stevie (last edited Jan 19, 2012 04:39PM) (new)

Stevie (stevie_l) For me it does take time to put stuff together because I'm pretty much brain dead in the morning and that's specifically why I get my clothes out the night before now. I like not having a uniform but they're really not that bad.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't agree with school uniforms, we should be allowed to wear what we want. Bullying happens anyway.

message 25: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (Forever_Alone_Wolf) It honestly depends. My school is like insane about uniforms.

message 26: by ARTPOP (new)

ARTPOP | 152 comments My uniform costs £200!

message 27: by Cody, Ninja (new)

Cody (rolinor) | 905 comments Mod
I would never spend that much money on clothing O.o

Me neither ..

Thrift stores for the win!

message 29: by ARTPOP (new)

ARTPOP | 152 comments It should last you 3 years. And I hate it!

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Personally, I think that people are individual and should be able to dress as individuals, as long as what they wear to school is modest. I mean, a school is a learning environment, so girls shouldn't be walking around with their boobs hanging out or guys with their pants around their ankles (though I must admit, it is kinda funny sometimes to see those badass gangsta's do the duck waddle!). But even though it's a learning environment people should be able to dress in a way that makes them feel like they're not just one more sheeple in the flock. However, on things like field trips or something, matching tees are a wise decision. My girl scout troop went to Disney World last summer... Let's just say that we could have saved money on aspirin if we had at least wore the same color! It was like herding flees!

message 31: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (Forever_Alone_Wolf) That's true, but my school let's us dress in free dress when we go on a field trip, but yet, they don't give us the same free dress rule everyday. We're a private school. Public schools don't have a uniform I think.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

I think we should be more concerned with food that's served at schools rather than what the students are wearing.

There is no excuse to have soda machines and junk food vendors poisoning the kids with high doses of sugar.

message 33: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 05, 2012 05:41PM) (new)

Paul, I feel the same way! Just so you know.

message 34: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (Forever_Alone_Wolf) They should have soda machines and junk food. Now my school has a ton of crappy food and drinks that are all organic (soda wise) and its sooo annoying. We used to be able to have buy candy, chips, and soda etc. It was nice because everything got things more and actually liked it.

message 35: by Hazel (last edited Mar 09, 2012 05:49AM) (new)

Hazel | 154 comments I went to a school where we had to wear uniform, it didn't prevent bullying. And what it definitely did do was increase the rivalry with the next school along, sort of like wearing gang colours.

Like Paul said, health etc should be a more pressing concern.

message 36: by ARTPOP (last edited Mar 11, 2012 05:29AM) (new)

ARTPOP | 152 comments If school uniforms are important they should be much more comfortable! I can't even start to say how annoying my blazer it! Plus in the winter it is so uncomfortable especially with a coat on!

Hazel | 154 comments Lorelli wrote: "If school uniforms are important they should be much more comfortable! I can't even start to say how annoying my blazer it! Plus in the winter it is so uncomfortable especially with a coat on!"

They should also chose one and stick to it, I went through 3 different uniform designs at my secondary school, and by all accounts its changed several times since then. The nearest secondary school to where I live now has different uniforms for different stages within the school, utterly pointless waste of money.

message 38: by ARTPOP (new)

ARTPOP | 152 comments One to stick to that you can wear properly!
Yeah, I live near a school who does that. It is pointless.

message 39: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (Forever_Alone_Wolf) I don't like uniforms, but my school's is pretty good. They let those who were at the school last year chose between keeping or not keeping the old uniforms to wear.

Yeesh...all my school asks of us is "no boobs, no belly, no butt", we dress however we want to otherwise....

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

Well that's nice!

message 42: by Hazel (new)

Hazel | 154 comments Thinking about it, maybe enforcing uniforms is a good thing until that fashion of having your ass hanging out of the back of your trousers dies away... ;P

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

Well when you put it like that... GO UNIFORMS!!!

xD Or you can just have a 'no butt' rule and allow us to dress how we want, within very basic restrictions....
