Wild Things: YA Grown-Up discussion

I'm starting this thread to discuss whether or not books deserve the awards they receive...

Blood Red Road by Moira Young just won the Costa Book Award for Children's Books. I have to say that I agree AND disagree. It didn't have much in the way of quality competition, so compared to what it was up against, absolutely. I didn't really care for it when I was reading it (I tried several times and couldn't get into it), but then I gave the audio a shot and it was phenomenal! So yes, I think it was a great story, but I liked it better when it was being read to me. I just couldn't seem to get Saba's voice right when I was reading it.

I recently reread Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, which won the Newbery. I think it was worthy of the award. It is a unique story about being couragous. It's very different from the animated movie, but I love them both.
