Ohh I love this book so much, Mia and I are so much alike we both have synesthesia. If you had synesthesia (or do!) what would you like to see? Also share your thoughts on the book!

Fran wow! you have synesthesia? that's cool... Do you like having it? Whats it like? I've always wondered (well ever since reading that book...)

I've also read the book The Name Of This Book Is Secret... It has people with synesthesia in it as well... Its by Pseudonymous Bosch

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

It's actually really cool, but annoying sometimes . In fact I didn't know that I had it (I thought everyone had it) until I read up on it after I read A Mango-Shaped Space. it was weird!

Diana--That's the same thing with me--I don't see them in the air, just in my mind! My name, Annie, is glittery red. And for example, the letter A is a bright purple, the letter B is a dark navy blue, and the letter C is an orange. Also, if you were to compare the same name spelled differently: Katherine or Catherine for instance--Katherine would be more of a bright orangish-red, while Catherine would be more mellow, sort of like the color of a sunset.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Your name is sort of like a foresty green, it's really pretty:)

Kyra I love this book, it sounds really cool and interesting to have synesthesia!

Annie wrote: "Diana--That's the same thing with me--I don't see them in the air, just in my mind! My name, Annie, is glittery red. And for example, the letter A is a bright purple, the letter B is a dark navy bl..."

I don't wanna act like I have it , but I think I might a little. For me, when I read I can visualize in my head a name or really, any word and it will have colors.
My name is like fire, because the K is a slightly glossy, but bold red. Y is a bright, bold yellow. R is kind of like a mahogany color. A is also red, but barely lighter than the K. It's cool:)

Mckenna Whats my name look like? I thought it would be cool to be able to see names with colors

message 8: by tin (new) - rated it 4 stars

tin for me it's a mixture of orange red and pink, but mostly reds

Fran I hate to be rude... And you probably get asked this a lot but.... What color is my name?

message 10: by Kyra (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kyra Frances wrote: "I hate to be rude... And you probably get asked this a lot but.... What color is my name?"

F - Brown
R - Mahogany
A - Red
N - Tan
C - Sunflower Yellow
E - Light Olive Green
S - Light blueish, Silvery

I can't really tell if I really have it, but the colors are definitely there when I'm reading and memorizing definitions for school. I can't see them in the air, but they're nagging at the back of my mind, like painting themselves on a black canvas.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Frances wrote: "I hate to be rude... And you probably get asked this a lot but.... What color is my name?"

orangish-yellow

message 12: by Fran (new) - rated it 5 stars

Fran Why thank-you! Is it hard for you to do math like the girl in Mango Shaped Space?

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Not really. Actually, math is one of my favorite subjects. I find it fun to put the colors and numbers together--I don't know why. I also feel that way about French and Spanish.

message 14: by tin (new) - rated it 4 stars

tin Frances wrote: "I hate to be rude... And you probably get asked this a lot but.... What color is my name?"

it's moss green, but slightly brighter than moss

message 15: by Fran (new) - rated it 5 stars

Fran That's so cool! I wish that I had it! DO you guys have like a favorite word because of the way it sounds? (Oooh Anne do you like the Hunger Games?)

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

I like certain names a lot, and I tend to like words and names with the letter "A" because the letter A tends to make some of the word purple, which I love.

Yes!!!! I loooove the Hunger Games!! Why do you ask? (its one of my favorite books)

message 17: by Kira (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kira I feel like maybe I have it sometimes... but I don't know. I don't really think so. What colour is my name? :)

Atlantic Gem I didn't know about it before. I read the "about the author" and I saw the word. So I googled it. It's pretty interesting. I always wondered what color my name would be (according to the cover of my book, it's orange ;) )

message 19: by tin (new) - rated it 4 stars

tin words are pretty, but i prefer some sounds because they have metallic colors, most of them silver

Cheryl But don't different people see different associations? If I ask you what my name looks like, you'll say one thing, but Mia would say something else?

message 21: by tin (new) - rated it 4 stars

tin Cheryl in CC NV wrote: "But don't different people see different associations? If I ask you what my name looks like, you'll say one thing, but Mia would say something else?"
yes, every synesthetes have different associations, but i have read that some letters (mostly common letters like A's or S's) have the same colors for many synesthetes. A's tend to be red and S's are yellow, sumthing like that. as for me A is between red and green, it's kinda hard to explain, it's has been an inside joke that i am colorblind in my synesthetic vision

Isabelle i think it would be cool....although it would probably be hard to read and stuff

message 23: by tin (new) - rated it 4 stars

tin Isabelle wrote: "i think it would be cool....although it would probably be hard to read and stuff"
got used to it. actually im kind of a book worm but sometimes when the colors are really vivid and pretty, i get easily distracted and i have to read the sentence all over again. what i do is i ignore the colors as if they're not there and is effective for me it just took me a whole lot of practice. what i find hard is to shut the colors of music. when i was a kid, i had a phobia of rain, more specifically of the sound of the rain, because i found it really dark with flashes of daggers, something like that, i thought raindrops are really fatal,

Isabelle that's sooooo cool!

message 25: by tin (new) - rated it 4 stars

tin Isabelle wrote: "that's sooooo cool!"

yes and no. creepy-cool :D it was a very hard time for me when i was a kid. and some classical music even today are bloody-red like mozart's requiem,

message 26: by Kyra (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kyra That kinda stinks, but I mean, it sounds really cool. That must be so trippy!

message 27: by tin (new) - rated it 4 stars

tin yes it does sound cool, but im not sure on the trippy part, coz the colors just come out so naturally, it's as natural as having two arms. i really want to try acupuncture, seeing aura in people sounds cooler! :D

message 28: by Kyra (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kyra That sounds so neat! The acupuncture does seem pretty cool too, I have always wondered what my aura would be.

Atlantic Gem Me too. I like purple. or light blue. or green...

*Rambles about the many colors she likes*

Natalie i would think that seeing colors like that all the time would give you headaches. although it seems cool, to be able to see colors like that, when no one else can.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Anne wrote: "Not really. Actually, math is one of my favorite subjects. I find it fun to put the colors and numbers together--I don't know why. I also feel that way about French and Spanish."

So, does seeing the colors help you learn a different language? Or do you think it makes no difference?

message 32: by Aiyana, A PotterWhoLockian (last edited Jun 19, 2012 02:45PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Aiyana, A PotterWhoLockian I have mental synesthesia, but only for some things, A is pinky red, B is dark brown, C is light green, you get the idea... and i have the same trouble learning other languages that everybody else has...

message 33: by Natalie (new) - added it

Natalie I cried in this book! it was so amazing and I recomend it to ten year olds and twenty year olds!

Sarah Annie wrote: "Diana--That's the same thing with me--I don't see them in the air, just in my mind! My name, Annie, is glittery red. And for example, the letter A is a bright purple, the letter B is a dark navy bl..."

fascinating!! wow must be terrifying knowing you've had it all your life and not knew it was different!

so do the colours make some things easier or more difficult like solving mathematical problems or memorizing things or can you just tune it out?

what's my name look like, if you don't mind me asking?

Aiyana, A PotterWhoLockian Math for me at least, wasnt harder. i made up stories, and some numbers didnt like eachother according to color, but thats about it. and for me, sarah is a blueish-greenish

message 36: by Maia (new) - added it

Maia That sounds so cool!! Sometimes I see things in my mind like I'm typing on a screen or computer, and have a really vivid memory, but nothing like that!

message 37: by Natalie (new) - added it

Natalie I imagine things like this but i dont see it. I imagin 4 as green. sarah as robins egg blue, 5 doesn't like 7 but 2 doesn't like 5 so 5 can't get revenge on 7 by being added with something to become 7

this is just like me omg Idk if its legit though

HURRAH! Unbalance Bean Mr. Wiggles Can anyone tell me what my color is? It's Lauren. If its gross tell me anyway I really think. Synesthesia is cool. When I asked my parents for the book they were like "ya...and this is real, right?" Id love to taste voices! As long as it wasn't yucky!

Marian Amazing! I wonder what color my name is?

message 41: by Natalie (new) - added it

Natalie Lauren seems like a smooth green with a kind of yellow
Marian is like red with a lot of pink in it and a dash of blue

Marian Marian wrote: "Amazing! I wonder what color my name is?"

awesome! Thanks Natalie! :D

HURRAH! Unbalance Bean Mr. Wiggles Ya! It must get tiring to always here people ask u that though ;(

message 44: by Natalie (new) - added it

Natalie not many people know about it. Also it is more in my head so control is pretty easy it kinda sucks though when you are writing a test and get distracted by numbers personalities or letters colors

message 45: by Maya (last edited Feb 19, 2013 02:45PM) (new)

Maya Edwards Hi! I think it must be really annoying to have to be asked all the time, but can someone PLEASE tell me what my name's color is? I have been wondering sense I read "A Mango Shaped Space" By Wendy Mass, a good author, BTW. So, thank you in advance!

Jessica This is amazing. Ever sense reading A Mango Shaped Space, I wanted to meet somebody who was like Mia. Actually I wanted to be Mia, but I'm not.. I even pretended for a day that I could see colors, and imagined my name as a soft baby blue with white cloud puffs of white. Though I'm older, this will always be one of my (many) favorite books :)

Samantha That's so cool! When I read a Mango Shaped Space I wasn't sure if the diesese was actually real, I just knew it sounded really cool. Could anybody tell me what my name is, you know, if you have it.

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

Sorry to bother y'all but my friend just left the room and she wouldn't let me ask you what color my name is because she thought that would be rude. So if any of you have Synesthesia could you tell me what color my name is
( Grettel) and hers ( Alexa)
Thanks!

FallingAngels I haven't read this book and am considering it. I have heard some people don't like Mass' portray on synesthesia. I have it, where I hear music notes and tase something and set a color or pattern. Ex: Middle C is rasberry-blue.

Elena The book was good in my opinion, but sad when the cat died.
