It's up for your own interpretations. I think they forgave each other and their relationship continued, after they both moved on from what happened. This is how I interpreted the end of the book, although I wished the author added more chapters at the end of the book to complete the story.
I think they wanted to give their relationship a new chance so they took little break from each other knowing they are together......
I agree with Lea, it is up to your own interpretation. I hope they stayed together. I also wish Jodi Picoult had added some chapters at the end to fully complete the story. I liked the book, Paige's feelings were so much like mine after I had my first child that it was creepy!
There was the whole, "They had sex three times" and the "first time was for forgiveness, the second time was for forgetting, and the third time was for new beginnings"... I interpreted that as ... "They're sticking together."
tragically contemporary and relevant. in over their heads before all grown up. her lack of mothering. his overwhelming responsibilities. a poor baby thrown into the chaos. what else is new in a culture that allows freedom of expression through sexuality and marriage for no other reason than because one wants to. add to that the very sad and real truth that society does not hold up motherhood, wifedom as anything noble. tear out structure and support and community. i think this book glaringly brings all of that into focus if the reader can dig out from under the individuals to the overall drama of what families ought to be and often are not
