The captain of the Bleeding Daggers, known as Wolf for his swift way of fighting, his agility and tactics, stood hanging on the shrouds with a rope in one hand. His first mate was cunning and graceful, yet very dangerous, known as Panther. He was dressed in black trousers underneath a pair of black boots with a red silk sash around his waist. He had on a white, billowing tunic tucked into his pants as a magnificent black great coat fluttered in the wind behind him, the red silk lining coming to life in the sun. His dark brown hair was slicked back over his head, with just a few stubborn strands hanging down in front of his face. The captain had lightly tanned skin and stunningly deep blue eyes that could entrance people for hours. He watched from his perch as the helmsman steered the Bleeding Daggers up next to the enemy ship. Wolf watched as his crew invaded the other Navy vessel using planks and ropes to get from one ship to the other. Only when the captain was certain the Navy crew was thoroughly distracted, did he take his leave and swing down into the middle of the fray. He wove and maneuvered his way through the fighting to reach the captain’s Cabin. He put his hand on the knob and was thankful it was unlocked and he pushed his way inside, closing the door behind himself. Wolf’s blue eyes scanned the room and made out only one occupant, a figure tied to a chair. As he neared the chair he took in the woman with her long, wavy black hair fanning out across her shoulders and down the back of the chair. She had skin tanned in a way that could only be from years of working at sea. The women suddenly turned towards him and her defiant, stormy grey eyes grew large and only then did Wolf see the gag her full lips were wrapped around. She was quite beautiful, wearing a large white sash across her chest and up over one shoulder that exposed her midriff. She had on brown pants that hugged her long legs like a second skin and the same brown boots with white designs coming up to her knees. Wolf smiled as he walked forward and knelt behind her, pulling a small dagger from his sash to cut the women free of her bonds. Once her hands were free they went straight to her mouth and tore the gag off, watching as Wolf untied her legs and stood, taking a few steps back as he watched her. The woman looked his in the eyes with her mouth parted as she breathed “…Taicho…” softly. She then stood and crossed the space between them eagerly before shooting out her hand to smack Wolf behind the head. “Baka!” she accused as Wolf gave her a bewildered look and brought his hand to his injured head “I told you not to come get me! I would have been fine! What if something had happened to the crew or the ship? What if they had been prepared and waiting for you?! What if you had been hurt-“She was cut off as Wolf crushed his capped lips to her smooth ones and Panther all but melted into him. Wolf wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer to him, crushing their bodies together. Panther wove her fingers through his hair and tilted her head to have a better angle. The kiss was gentle, yet filled with passion and their emotions were passed to each other as their tongues tangled. When the captain broke the kiss, the first mate was left panting slightly and Wolf asked “Better?” Panther scowled but couldn’t help the small tug on the corners of her lips as she fought her smile and replied “No, I’m not. You try being tuck bound and gagged while a whole crew drools over you, whilst only the captain was allowed to touch his precious treasure. The pirate captain was chuckling over her words before frowning as his eyes went cold and hard, his grip tightening on the first mate. Panther smirked “Oh, possessive much? Don’t worry, he didn’t go too far. But…” she trailed off, forcing Wolf to look at her face “I’m the one who gets to kill him.” She said before pushing away and started to search the room. “Now where is my sword, the only blood I’ve had on myself for a week has been my own. I need to kill something before I commit a bloody massacre!” she yelled from across the room. The captain spoke “But you’re going to do that anyway…” and he added in his mind “And that’s why I love you.”
Raine went down the street to her apartment. She went up in the rusty elevator and got off on the fourth floor. She went down the hall to 4K and put her key in the door. She twisted the key and opened the door.
Raine looked into her lonely apartment and turned on the light. She went over to her desk and tossed her bag on it. Raine went into her kitchen and open up her refrigerator. She looked in. It was almost barren, except for a jug of milk, a few eggs, and about thirteen apples. She grabbed an apple, bit into it and closed the door.
Raine went back to her desk and got her laptop out of her bag. She powered it up and checked her e-mail. There was nothing interesting, just a bunch of spam and her mother had e-mailed her an article of one of her many sisters receiving yet another award. This time it was Marianne for saving yet another patient's life from the near clutches of death. Raine sighed and deleted the e-mail. She closed the laptop and went to bed, feeling a little annoyed.
The next morning, Raine climbed out of her bed and went into the kitchen to eat breakfast. She got out a box of Honey Bunches of Oat, poured it into a bowl, and then poured milk on it. After eating, she then got dressed, went down in the elevator, and took the bus to her job.
Raine got off the bus and went inside the studio. She turned on the lights and stared at the wall mirrors and the barre. Raine went into the waiting room and saw her best friend and secretary, Ashlynn was already ready here. Ashlynn walked over to Raine and gave her a hug. "Hey," Ashlynn said,” First class is at nine so get ready, Dancing Queen." Raine nodded and got into her dancer's gear.
After the class, one of the mothers walked over to Raine. "Hi," the mother said to Raine, "I'm Lea's mom, Sandra." Raine nodded. Sandra said, "I really want to thank you." Raine was confused. Sandra caught the confused look and explained. "Well about 3 months ago my sister got into a car accident and lost part of her leg, "Sandra explained,” She went into a deep depression and no one was able to help her. Then, about two weeks ago I videotaped my daughter's class with you because Lea wanted to show her aunt her dancing because Lea isn't allowed in the hospital room since she's not over 12.
"I showed the tape to my sister and the part when you were showing the dance to the girls caught her eye. She saw you dancing and it gave her hope. She pulled out of her depression and is now back to walking, all thanks to you. She had lost the leg below her knee and thought her life was hopeless. She saw you dancing beautifully even though you have lost almost all of your leg. Thank you so much for giving my sister hope."
Sandra gave Raine a hug and walked out the door with Lea. Raine walked over to a chair on her prosthetic leg and started to cry. Ashlynn heard the crying and came in. "Raine, what's wrong?” she asked her friend.
Raine looked up at her friend and a tear slid down her face. "I may only have one leg and my family may think I'm a disgrace and hopeless, but absolutely nothing is wrong."
This is the prologue of my story. The carriage rocked back and forth as we started to pull away from home. I studied the flowers surrounding the now empty house, not letting my gaze wander up to the mirror-like windows where Mother would have smiled and waved at me while I skipped through the garden. I didn't look at the windows where the study would be, Father sitting in his chair surrounded by those wonderful books he read to me. But then, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted my bedroom window. My breath caught and I slammed my eyes shut as the image of what happened the night before flooded into my thoughts.
...................................
It was a calm night, a gentle breeze flitting through the trees. The air felt it was on the border between spring and the coming summer and smelled of the flowers below. The moon was clear and brilliant, and as I laid in my bed, I thought with a smile, I'm going to be seven years old tomorrow. I squirmed in delight and watched the stars glitter beyond my window.
Slowly, my vision began to blur as drowsiness crept in. My eyelids began to drop and when they were opened just a sliver, a flash of light emanated from beneath the door. Immediately, I bolted upright and stared at the crack below the door. Nothing. "Mother?" I called out in a small voice. Silence hung heavy in the cold darkness. I swung my legs out from underneath e warmth of the blankets and let my barefeet brush the floor. I almost squealed at the coolness and quickly slipped over to door. Hurriedly, I pulled on a pair of boots, then inched the door open. Looking up and down the hallway, I didn't see any sign of the source of that light.
I tiptoed to the end of the hall and turned the corner. As I walked past closed doors and portraits of glaring faces, my heart pounded and my ears roared in the stillness. Eventually, I reached the end of the hall and arrived at the bottom of the stairs. My gaze traveled p the steps until I spotted a faint glow at teh top. Mother and Father are up there, I thought. Maybe they're making a surprise for me. The thought pushed away the fears growing at the back of my mind and I felt some courage return as I started to climb the stairs.
Once I reached the top, I froze. The scene before me would forever be burned into my memory. Not too far down the hall, my parents stood facing a slim, elegant black-hooded figure emanating the same white light I saw earlier. With their backs to me, they seemed to be exchanging hushed words and I saw the worry on their faces. Then the hooded figure nodded and slowly pointed a pale finger at them. I let out a gasp and quickly covered my mouth with my hands. But they already noticed me. The figure seemed to look right at me from beneath the gaping hood. Mother turned around as if in slow motion, Father glaced back at me.
Chills ran down my body at the sadness, despair on my parents' faces and yet of their overwhelming love for me too. It took me a while to find my voice. "What's going on?" I asked in a whisper.
"It's nothing, Katherine darling. Go back to bed, " Mother said gently.
I studied their faces, ignoring the hooded figure standing behind them silently. I could tell Father's eyes were brimming with emotion and Mother looked ready to burst into tears. Even though doubts tugged at my mind, I nodded solemnly and started down the stairs. As I left, I heard an unfamiliar voice say in a surreal, melodious tone:
"To save the on who will be lost,
Life for life, this is the cost.
Taken to a strange world to stay,
Until needed to battle another day.
And so it shall be."
Shivers ran down my spine in the silence following those words. Without waiting to find out more about what Mother and Father were doing, I hurried back to bed. I didn't realize taht was the last I'll ever see of them.
