I've re read this series so many times... addicted much? Is there anything else planned for this world?
Hello! Sorry to stumble in so late. I've been writing and haven't been paying the attention that I should to anything else. This book follows Elezar and takes place about five years after the events of the last book. I'm hoping to work in a few cameo for characters from the previous books, but to also expand the world a little.
I hope people will enjoy the new settings as well as the witches beasts and battles I've got planned...
Any thoughts about redheads, by the way?
Ginn wrote: "I've been writing and haven't been paying the attention that I should to anything else."That's fine for me ;-).
Lisa wrote: "I read a review somewhere awhile back that compared LOTWH to Harry Potter...similar vibe or something. I was a bit shocked."
I've read that in a couple places and had pretty much the same reaction. But I figured that it was because they were both set at schools or something.
I can't remember where I read it though.

Hehe! I sort of thought that as well, but just accepted that everyone is entitled to an opinion.
Quick question...Since I finally stopped rereading The Rifter (seriously, my friends were going to do an intervention), I went back and reread Lord of the White Hell. In the second book, during the Solstice, Kiram mentions that his father gave a Solstice lamp to each of his brothers (plural) when they left home. How many brothers does Kiram have? Are there any other additional siblings we didn't meet? Just curious.Blue

Yes, there is another brother, Naudim, who left when he married a woman from the Salt Islands. I imagined him as Dauhd's twin, but I couldn't find space to really work him into the book.
He's a little like the eldest of the Grunito brothers, Isandro, who died several years before the books begin; the only hint of him is the mention of 'Lady-dog' in the Sorrowlands. She was Isandro's beloved hunting dog. When I was writing that scene I imagined that where Nestor had a vision of the dog, Elezar saw their dead brother...but since the story is told from Kiram's point of view no one be Elezar and me know that... and now you as well!
It's kind of funny how often I create details that inform my feel for the characters and the story but that rarely are ever directly enter the text of the books... (You don't even want to get me started on the world building/ character details behind the Rifter :D)
Ginn wrote: It's kind of funny how often I create details that inform my feel for the characters and the story but that rarely are ever directly enter the text of the books... (You don't even want to get me started on the world building/ character details behind the Rifter :D)OK, you know you just CAN'T say something like that and not share. Personally, I would love to know all of these little details and world building elements. In fact, I think out of any of the books I've read lately, The Rifter is the one best suited to a reading companion. But in the interim, my greedy, little hands would love anything else you would care to share about the world of The Rifter. (Just don't tell my friends. See above post about intervention. **wink**)
Have you considered writing short stories where you could use the background details that haven't fit into the books?I think that would be a GREAT idea. That world was so rich and complex, I think "A Day in the Life of..." could give you endless possibilities, and could allow you to explore so many aspects that we didn't get to see in the novels.
Of course, I am also eagerly awaiting Elezar's novel as well. There's so much more to him than the inital impression we're given. (And if Javier and Kiram show up, pffft, I guess I'll just have to deal. **grin**)

Lou wrote: "Have you considered writing short stories where you could use the background details that haven't fit into the books?"I've tried writing short stories but they tend to turn into novellas and novels really quickly-- believe it or not I imagined the Lord of the White Hell books as a novella when I first outlined it and started writing.
Astrid Amara, (author of the truly epic Archer's Heart) just laughs at me every time I claim that I'm going to write something "short and simple".

I've played with the idea of short stories but I always want to bring a little more to them and before I know it I'm writing a 2000 page epic! :D
I'm not sure if you've read my "short story" in the Irregulars but nearly all the action takes place over the course of only three days-- but somehow I managed to fill 141 pages with the events... brevity doesn't seem to be my strong suit (grin).
On the other hand I plan to build the world and the characters of these 'Cadeleonians' series through several books so that by the end of them I'm hoping readers will feel that they truly know the place and people.
Sylvie wrote: "Actually, sorry to derail, but I do have a technical question about the bells in LoTWH...I know there are day bells and night bells - I just don't know how it corresponds to our time. I'm a bit slow on that, so is 4th bell in the morning around 10AM or what? Does anyone know? "I think I might be able to answer this one! (I tried to write a brief note in the back of the books but I'm not sure I explained anything very well. I'm happy to give it another go.)
The time any given bell rings would be different depending on the time of year(and to a lesser degree how far north or south the bell ringer lives). First day bell sounds at daybreak, so the exact hour changes with the seasons as does the number of loud day bells vs softer night bells.
In the summer the daylight hours are marked by fourteen day bells. In the winter there are only ten day bells but fourteen night bells. The are rung about an hour apart.
At the hight of summer I'd say that 4th bell would fall somewhere between 9am and 10 am but at the height of winter it might not sound until 11 am... unless a bell ringer sleeps in, then it could be well after noon! :D)
I must not enable your addiction!(Your friends will hunt me down.)
But it's to reading, and to reading GREAT books!! Do you WANT me to go out there and find something to replace that addiction? Or worse yet, in my desperation turn to reading **gasp** crap? =P
How about just a simple...please?

Alright...(I'm so bad as saying no.)
I'm not sure how well my millions of little post-it notes, 3x5 cards and sheets of newsprint will translate to a post on Goodreads, but if you have a question you're curious about. I'll see if I have a note about it and provide you with an answer... Anything to keep you from reading**gasp** crap!!
By the way it looks like there's a little pre-release release of the digital version of Irregulars going on at weightlessbooks.com
(It's got goblins and fairies and hobos!)

Anyway, I'm actually really curious about the Eastern Queens, what their land was like, their society, and how it fit in with the rest of Basawar, especially how it seemed to be a country ruled by, well, Queens, when the rest of the world seemed to be so patriarchal. Probably too much for a simple post, but I am really curious about any details you could share. (Jin was one of my favourite characters.)

"This is probably the wrong thread to be posting on but here you go anyway!
According to my notes--or what I can still find of them-- the Eastern Queens passed inheritance and rulership along maternal lines. They were mystics and nature worshipers and came into conflict with the Payshmura because their use of the Rifter was destroying the health of the world.
Originally they were great trade partners with the Payshmura but as their philosophical clashes grew into actual battles, the Payshmura began to become more and more demeaning towards women and more repressive of all people with Eastern features.
The intensely patriarchal society that John encounters is so extreme, in part, because of the Payshmura Church's efforts to discredit the Eastern Queens and keep their own populace from knowing the real cost to their world of unleashing the Rifter.
I also have a little scrawl on the side of a card that says 'geomancy'.
Sylvie wrote: "Do you have the story of Calixto and Yassin on index cards somewhere? I've always felt so saddened by their tragic tale...I truly hope they have had some peace (as much as they can get) before war tore them apart...literally. Misguided souls, but I wish their love story was something neither regretted... ."I'm afraid most of their story is in the book within the book-- Calixto's diary. (At least some of which inspired Javire's attempts to seduce Kiram.)
I like to think that even though their time together was brief and brutal that they fell deeply and truly in love at first sight. I also imagine that Calixto has been waiting for Yassin all this time so that they can be reborn together in better times.
Ginn wrote: "I also imagine that Calixto has been waiting for Yassin all this time so that they can be reborn together in better times."THIS makes me so happy. I completely agree with Sylvie. To me, one of the most poignant parts of the entire series was when Yassin simply says "I wait for Calixto."

Fedeles' own book should take place a little later still and involve far more assassins and courtiers... and horses, of course.
Ginn wrote: "Fedeles' own book should take place a little later still and involve far more assassins and courtiers... and horses, of course. "Is this the official announcement of another book? Why aren't you all squeeing?!?

Wow! Squee, indeed!
Can it be? A third book!? My wish came trueeeee~I effin' love LotWH. Re-read the two books several times.
Can't wait to read about Elezar. ^^

Less dreary than funny,(I hope). Elezar needs some laughter in his life.

He's a character I really like myself, so I'm excited to get to give him his own book.

I'm SO excited to find out both Elezar and Fedeles are getting their own books. Just to add even more pressure...Is there the possibility of us ever getting the story of Alizadeh and Rafie? Their lives, both together and apart, seemed so fascinating, and I would love to know more.
Bluesimplicity wrote: "Also, I have another LotWH question...What did Javier see when they crossed the Sorrowlands?"I think for the most part he saw the ancient wards that earlier Bahiim had laid to create the protected road through the sorrowlands. Though I'm sure that visions of the family he had lost floated at the corners of his vision.
Bluesimplicity wrote: "...Is there the possibility of us ever getting the story of Alizadeh and Rafie? I have to complete the book I'm working on, before I can think about others.
Sylvie wrote: "Want to see so much more from this verse! Ahahaha, I'm *thisclose* to committing the most horrendous faux pas by saying 'please write faster'! I can confirm that a steady trickle of pages has been landing on my desk. Elezar's story is slowly coming into being.

Huff, puff, gasp...typing... so .. hard... gasp , gasp.... Elezar so heavy..
I've just re read the first books in the series and they are still just as marvelous as the first time I read them. I cannot wait to read Elezars book. Will it be a serial, or 2 books like Lord of the White Hell? And, a graphic novel... That would be SO cool :)

Right now we're re-working my website so that it will be easier for me to post chapters and such.

I'm proud to have written your "gateway literature" :D There are some awesome stories to be found in this genre as well as some of the nicest, smartest readers!

I made the Haldiim proverb up. Though I imagine that something like it must already exist in some culture... at least I hope so.
Hey all, just writing to say that there's an excerpt up for the sequel now.

Thanks Nicole, I should have posted that myself... I'm really bad at getting online as often as I ought to.
I do hope folks like the sample chapter. I'm planning on posting the second chapter as well, next weekend.
