Halfway through, and things are NOT looking good for the Barghast....they were such a thriving force back in Memories of Ice that it all just seems so wrong somehow...

Twilight and the Watch dont seem much better, but appearances can be deceiving!

and Silchas and Rud seem to be pairing up...but dragons aren't really much for partnership, are they?

Which all leads to the big question...what are the Malazans about to walk into???

This is NOT going to be fun, I would guess...

Shelley (shelley69) | 597 comments Here we really come into the dark part of the story!! There are things happening that will break your heart! Also we meet Olar Ethil....that b*tch! Opps did I type that?? Well anyway I'm not the only one who thinks so, I believe Toc would agree with me!

I just love Twilight and the Watch! This story line is so interesting and I found myself drawn to Twilight and The Watch! There are times I wanted to say, brothers!! Grrrr.... And other times I wanted to say, sisters!! Grrrrr.... all well written! :)

And as Maggie said the Barghast are falling apart, I was hoping Tool could keep them together!

Oh and Badelle and the snake breaks my heart! :(

Tool's sacrificing his life doesnt seem to have fixed anything, but this is Erikson-and Tool is a story that will never be finished.

I feel sorry for Badalle too, she would have been a cool little kid...

Shelley (shelley69) | 597 comments The entire "snake" is heart breaking and it's hard to think on the thought of what all of them could have been....

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments I've got to say I didn't like a lot of part 3. Not that the writing was bad or the story. I just didn't like how things were all going to pot in this part. Everything kept getting worse and worse.

Tool's story in this section was just heart-breaking. If only the Barghast had really listened to him instead of resenting him.

I really like the Watch. I like how he does what is good for his sister even though she banishes him and doesn't like what he's doing.

At least the Bonehunters get a nice break in this section. Just a little trip down the river.

Traci Yeah, things definitely get bleak in this book. It's done so well though.

This is where I decided I HATE Olar Ethil. She ranks right up there with Mallick Rel!

What she does to Toc and Tool here is just so, wrong!

When I first read this, I thought that the 'demise' of the barghast went on way too long, but on the reread, I am really feeling that showing it from so many perspectives really brought it home emotionally...they deserved so much better!

I SOOOOOOOOO agree Maggie!! I couldn't get over what she did to Toc and Tool!! How could she do that!!

And what happeneds to Haten!! Broke my heart! And then the children are hunted, alllllll bad moments!!!

Yeah-the Hetan thing was horrible...such a strong character to have such an ignoble end!

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments I don't get Olar Ethil's motivations. She really is causing terrible things and it seems like it was just for some selfish power trick. And to think she caused the T'Lan Imass's ritual as a thing of vengence.

I'm with you two adding her to my hate list.

I couldn't believe how Hetan's people turned on her like that. What a cruel thing to do to her. I guess that's where jealosy and greed can take you. I am glad she didn't have to suffer this way for too long. So sad, very, very say.

And honestly, even at the end of TCG I still didn't understand Olar Ethil's motivations! All I think of when I read a passage with her in it....that B*tch! :O

well, I do think it's important to remember she was one of the original soletaken dragons. Doesnt she even say something about being involved with Rake? Maybe she is even the mother of one of his children....
she has been around being a player this whole time, and has gotten zero credit....so maybe that's it. I dont know...

Lee (kiwifirst) Certainly fascinating to see the demise of the Barghast happen so quickly, it shows how a leader can hold so much respect over warring clans to unite them. Hetans father first, I forget his name and then Tool, but once those leaders are disposed off, then it is utter chaos.

In the story of what happens with Hetan I think Erikson showed us some of his most brutal writing yet. There has been lots of horror and sad moments as friends are lost, but the ongoing treatment of Hetan was just horrific and you were just hoping something good could happen, but you also knew you were reading a Malazan story and life generally is miserable and brutal. Phenomenal writing.

Maybe Olar has had a long term goal with the Imass and the ritual was supposedly to keep them around in case of "x". X being what I would have expected to happen in CG. She certainly wasn't impressed when Itkovian freed them.

Lee (kiwifirst) oh and btw OST is REALLY good. Really good. If you like the Seguleh you'll love this book.
One fail though, ICE trying to write the Kruppe character. It is kind of painful.

end of thread hijack.

I did thiink Toc's rescue of the children was a poetic answer to what had happened...

I still see Olar Ethil motives as being selfish in nature! She "preserved" the Tlan Imass so that she had a personal Army, otherwise they would have simply died out! And a God without worshipers has NO POWER and dies!
