Awesome to have you here, Barb. I was getting lonely (and fearing no one else would show up). Even if it's just you and I, now I won't feel so bad. We can talk to each other. LOL. :-)

Lanie Malone Hello. I just self- published my first book a few days ago and this seemed like a good place to learn what to do now. :)

Welcome Christy and Lanie. Nice to "meet" you both. I hope you'll post questions in the other discussion folders. I'm looking forward to talking with you and (I hope) helping you with ideas on promoting your work. :-)

Thank you! The more, the merrier, right? :-)

Heather Woods (heather-woods) | 1 comments Hi Jill, Nice to meet you! I'm published in non fiction but am trying my hand at fiction at the mo (romance). Lot harder to make the change over than I originally thought!
I have loads of questions... but this is my first Q&A so am not sure of the etiquette?
And would you like to mention this on my Google+, Facebook and twitter or would that swamp things?
Heather

Hi Heather. Pleased to meet you. I haven't set up any real rules, so all you need to do is post your questions in the folder I created for that discussion, and then I'll be happy to do my best to answer them. :-) I have experience writing fiction and non-fiction, but everything I write is "creative," and I think every author has a "voice" they bring to the table, no matter what they're writing. I'll be curious to see if I can offer you some valuable advice.

Feel free to post about this anywhere you like. If I get swamped, I'll just ask for everyone to be patient with me until I can get everything answered. :-) Thank you!

Cindy Matthews (celinechatillon_cynthianna) | 5 comments Hi, I'm published in both fiction and non-fiction, novels, novellas, short stories, news articles, book/theatre reviews and essays, blogging... (You could say I've been around the block!)

I've been active promoting my romantic fiction on publisher's email loops and online chats for the past decade, but I've not quite grasped how to use Goodreads to reach a wider audience. So, this sounds like it could be quite beneficial to a non-tech savvy writer like me. :)

Hi, Celine. Pleasure to have you here! :-) Please feel free to post specific questions in the other discussion folder, and I will do my best to answer them.

Do you have both a "regular" and an "author" profile on GoodReads? If you have an author profile, GR offers an author guide with tips on using their site to market your book(s). A Q&A Session like this is a good idea. You can also register to do a giveaway. You definitely want to interact, so whatever gets you out there talking to other authors and readers, that's what you have to do... And it shouldn't just be about selling your book(s). Sales seem to happen organically, if you focus on networking, talking to readers, holding contests, taking polls, getting your book(s) out there for review, etc.

I don't mean to "push" my book, but there are a lot of good ideas in there. :-) You might consider picking up a copy. Otherwise, definitely ask questions and I'll answer. :-)

I have friends who are academics and generally do nonfiction. One thing I noticed in their fiction is that it's somewhat "distant". They're so sued to dealing with facts that they need to to take an extra look at getting inside a character's head to bring across the person and emotion needed for fiction.

Yeah, and one exercise I've heard helps with this is to first write the scene or chapter or whatever in first person. You become the character, and you experience the story, and you tell it as you experience it. I've heard this makes it less likely you'll "tell" (rather than show), and takes you deeper into the story so you can express the required introspection and emotions.

Cindy Matthews (celinechatillon_cynthianna) | 5 comments Hi Erika--I see you are a YA sub editor... Can you tell us more about what you're looking for at Noble YA? (I have a WIP that's aimed at the YA audience and I've never really tried that market before, so I am curious to learn more. You can email me off this Q & A board if you wish or leave a link. Thanks.)
