nina (ladeeda) SUMMIT BEGINS SEARCH FOR NEW MOON DIRECTOR

Los Angeles, CA, December 7, 2008 – Summit Entertainment and director Catherine Hardwicke jointly announced today that the filmmaker will not be directing the next installment in the newly minted TWILIGHT film franchise. Summit's targeted end of 2009 or early 2010 release of the film, NEW MOON, does not work with Ms. Hardwicke's required prep time to bring her vision of the film to the big screen. Thus as has been done before with many successful film franchises, the studio will employ a new director for NEW MOON.

"I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct NEW MOON," said Hardwicke. "Directing TWILIGHT has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel-- it is a great story."

"Catherine did an incredible job in helping us to launch the TWILIGHT franchise and we thank her for all of her efforts and we very much hope to work with her on future Summit projects," said Erik Feig, Summit's President of Production. "We as a studio have a mandate to bring the next installment in the franchise to the big screen in a timely fashion so that fans can get more of Edward, Bella and all of the characters that Stephenie Meyer has created. We are able to pursue an aggressive time frame as we have the luxury of only adapting the novels into screenplays as opposed to having to create a storyline from scratch."

So i just on the radio that the real reason that cathrine quit the project was because they r planning to make major changes to the script so that Robert is in the movie more than he was in the book. And she wanted to stay true to the book and not change things...maybe just a rumor but I really hope they don't change it to much...

I guess maybe it will make things better because there are some really slow parts in New Moon and it would be nice to see what Edward is doing the whole time...plus who doesn't want to see more of Robert=P

Bailey (werewolflvr) | 73 comments I"m so glad that catherine hardwick isn't directing new moon! don't get me wrong, she did an amazing job but there were way too many close-ups and just some of the choices she made just made it look and feel cheesy,, so i hope that this gives New Moon a new opportunity to be better than twilight!!! I'M SO EXCITED! new moon is one of my favorites in the series! yay!

message 17: by Bailey (new)

Bailey (werewolflvr) | 73 comments THEY CAN'T CHANGE THE BOOK THAT MUCH!!! i mean it would be cool to see what edward was doing while bella was up to no good (hehe) but i mean the movie has to follow the same plot! she has to be with jacob throughout almost the whole movie, she has to find out about the werewolves in the same way, and she has to save edward the same way, it would be cool to see what he was doing while she was going through all that but they can't change the book for the movie! that's just wrong!

I found this article this morning regarding New Moon and supposedly Kristen Stewarts reaction to a new director. Personally I think a new director would be great. There was definitely something off in Twilight. Some scenes flowed better than others. Sometimes the acting was great other times it was hard to watch. I wonder if new direction could fine tune these flaws. Let's hope so. And all this fuss that they are rushing things is silly. I hope they are careful to produce a good quality film but they are on a time crunch. Take a real good look at Robert Pattison. He's not getting any younger. As much as I love him as Edward it would have been a wiser choice to pick a younger actor for the part. This would have given all parties involved more time. I doubt in 6 years time Pattison could still play a 17 year old.

You defiantly have a point about the actors getting older!!! I do love Robert as Edward...in fact I really like them all so it would be pretty sad and kind of mess things up of they decided to replace anyone...

message 23: by Angie (new)

Angie | 40 comments Your right Stephanie it would mess things up if they decided to replace anyone. I think the main thing they got right was the casting. Everyone fit their role so perfectly. I would hate to watch sequels with different actors. I think that the next movie will be better than the first. Harry Potter has had a few different directors and the movies are always better than the last. I also think that they are over thinking it with the scenes in Italy. I am sure there is a way around them flying out to Italy to film. I hope they shoot those scenes in LA and put more money into the special effects. Most of the Italy parts of the book can easily be done on a set. I'll have to check but I don't remember Stephanie Meyer going into to much depth about Italian landscapes or monuments. Nothing that anyone will miss or notice. Rosalie and I were talking and the way the werewolves shift in Blood and Chocolate would be perfect for New Moon. I also hope they use real wolves. Even if they are smaller than Stephanie Meyers wolfs at least it won't look lame. I have very high expectations of New Moon.

Stephanie | 4175 comments Mod
Me to I sometimes hope that my expectations are not to high! They could easily film the scenes in Italy on a set because I don't think that its a real place so they could do it how ever they see fit! And your right about the wolves...I would rather have them be real and a little on the small size than huge and super fake.

message 25: by Bailey (new)

Bailey (werewolflvr) | 73 comments i don't think real wolves are the way to go, it would make the movie have a different feel that it should have. it should have a magical feel, not a nature film feel. i think if they did something like how they did aslan in chronicles of narnia for the wolves that would be awesome! and they have to be pretty big, she describes them as as tall as horses. maybe no that big, but bigger than an average wolf, the whole idea of the second book is that they thought something bigger than a bear was killing people, small wolves aren't bigger than a bear

You have a good point! I just heard that Chris Weitz may be directing new moon...lm not really familar with his work but I guess he did the movie "About a boy" and also helped with "American pie"...

message 27: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hannah7299) I really hope the next director will pull it off in a good way. I thought Hardwicke did a great job with Twilight. I can't imagine that Stephenie Meyer would stand for them changing the storyline to have Edward in it more. I don't see how they could do that without ruining the story. My guess is that they'll do computer imaging for the wolves.

message 28: by Bailey (new)

Bailey (werewolflvr) | 73 comments yeah computer imaging is definately the way to go

Golden Compass Director on New Moon?

Deadline Daily Hollywood are reporting that Summit have the project out to Golden Compass director Chris Weitz (About a Boy). There’s a chance New Moon and Eclipse, the third book in the series, will be shot back-to-back, and if so Weitz will be on board to direct both. Nothing is confirmed as of yet, though, so don’t start blogging about it or anything till we can tell you for sure.

Got this from IMDB...

I know its not confirmed but...????

Despite "Twilight" success in digging gold at the box office upon its release, its sequel "New Moon" may lose one of its actors, Taylor Lautner. Entertainment Weekly (EW) reported that the actor who takes the role of Jacob Black in "Twilight" may not return to the sequel because Summit Entertainment won't rehire him.

On the possibility of Lautner not coming back to play Black, EW hinted that the reason of Summit unwillingness to bring Lautner back was because the studio consider the teenage actor to be too "young-looking and slight of frame to play the maturing werewolf". Still, the studio have yet to give out statement regarding the speculation.

EW has also reported that Summit are about to hire rumored director Chris Weitz. Despite strong denial of the signing in of Weitz from both Summit and Weitz's agency, the publication noted that sources claimed that the deal is imminent and that negotiations with other potential Moon directors have been stopped.

An adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's second novel in her Twilight series, "New Moon" will be penned by "Twilight" screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg. Both Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are expected to reprise their roles as Edward and Bella, while the pre-production of this sequel has been slated to start on December 15 for a tentative release on November 20, 2009.

Rumored to be the front runner earlier in the week, Entertainment Weekly has now confirmed that Chris Weitz will direct the sequel to Twilight, New Moon, replacing Catherine Hardwicke.

Hardwicke reportedly clashed with Summit Entertainment during Twilight’s production and EW says Weitz landed the New Moon gig because he has a solid relationship with the studio, he’s considered easy to work with and has experience with special effects.

In New Moon, the second novel in Stephenie Meyer’s young-adult series, Bella (Kristen Stewart) recovers from the vampire attack that almost claimed her life. She looks to celebrate her birthday with Edward (Robert Pattinson) and his family, however, a minor accident during the festivities results in Bella’s blood being shed, a sight that proves too intense for the Cullens. They decide to leave the town of Forks, Washington for Bella and Edward’s sake. Melissa Rosenberg is writing the screenplay.

Weitz co-directed American Pie, Down to Earth and About a Boy with his brother Paul. Last year he helmed The Golden Compass, based on the Philip Pullman novel, which didn’t impress North American audiences but was a hit overseas.

New Moon is tentatively scheduled to open November 20, 2009.

I DID NOT WRITE THIS I GOT IT FROM THE IMDB WEBSITE...

If I were a Twilight fan, and by that I mean someone who is legitimately interested in high quality movie versions of the books and not some crazed girl wearing a Team Jacob shirt, this news and the speed at which it is taking on new angles would trouble me. Actually, the events of the past week would really bother me, but this would be the icing on that cake.

First, Summit Entertainment parted ways with director Catherine Hardwicke. From what everyone heard, that's not a total loss. Entertainment Weekly just confirmed this morning that the studio has hired Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass) to step in and direct the sequel New Moon and possibly Eclipse, the third book in the Stephenie Meyer series. With me so far? OK...
But Bloody Disgusting has learned that the script for New Moon has already been turned into the studio, so it was a bit of a rush job, and given our collective history with hurry-up-and-get-it-out sequels, that's our first red flag. The story goes that Summit really wants to release New Moon next year. And all of a sudden, this potentially gargantuan franchise is running its shop like a Filipino psychic surgery clinic.
Really? You're just going to hire a director over a period of two weeks, spend two months in pre-production, shoot it for six weeks, edit together a trailer for Comic Con and go with what you've got next November? I'll concede the point that it could work for the next movie, but franchises can't keep that kind of heat for four straight years. You have to give the fans time off.
Don't argue the Saw franchise with me, because its numbers, while still impressive for low budget fare, have fallen off every year since the second film. And that series has never been a cultural phenomenon. You can't expect the crowd that was there on opening weekend 2008 to be there four years later if you keep hitting them over the head with the product. It's called burn, and every hit show, every hit album has a slump when it saturates the market.
That appears to be the plan, however: Eclipse would follow in the fall of 2010, and Breaking Dawn would hit theaters in 2011. For a series that a lot of people have compared to Harry Potter (although the raw data would laugh at that), Twilight could sure learn a lot from that business model: You want to make big money? Make 'em wait.

Latest 'Twilight' Doings

Sequel Gearing up with new Director
Now that Summit Entertainment seems set on Chris Weitz directing New Moon and Eclipse, attention has turned to gearing up for production. The pre-production period technically kicks off Monday in Vancouver, according to Entertainment Weekly. The rush is to allow Summit to capitalize on Twilight’s smash success by having the second film in Stephenie Meyer’s series come out on November 20, 2009.

Originally director Catherine Hardwicke was replaced with rumors pointing to Summit’s displeasure with her but EW’s take is that she left not willing to shoot on such an ambitious schedule.

"She'd love to do the sequel if she could do it better than Twilight,” according to an anonymous source.. “It became clear that Summit didn’t have those same priorities." Hardwicke also had issues with the budget, upped from $37 to $50 million with hefty raises for the sitars but leaving little for the clan of werewolves featured in the story.

Summit production president Erik Feig told EW about New Moon, “There is that first...script. All the finesse that turns a screenplay into a movie hasn’t ¬happened yet.” Summit hesitated to commission the sequel scripts until just weeks before the movie opened which cost them valuable time and added pressure.

Apparently, Summit is also interested in replacing Taylor Lautner, who played Jacob. His agents have been furiously campaigning to show the young actor is up for the dramatic challenges inherent in the new film.
