The Night's Dawn trilogy has some good stuff in it, but it's a huge commitment. Fallen Dragon is a standalone novel.
Below are links to my own reviews of some of these books:Pandora's Star:

The size of them puts me off! It would take me forever to get thru a trilogy when the books are this big!!
I was completely hooked on the Commonwealth saga at the beginning of the year! I ended up reading the Void trilogy first by accident which made for some major spoilers when I got to the first two. I enjoyed most the depth of the universe Hamilton creates. I thought both series wrapped up a little too predictably (and yes, I realize I already knew the end of Judas Unchained!). Would love any suggestions on books set in similar universes, though not necessarily by Hamilton.
I agree with most everything Robert says. The exception is that I found the Void series very hard going. Although I read the series, I really cannot remember what happened beyond the first book or two.And Ozzie is brilliant!
I loved PandoraJudas was a good sequel.
The Void disappointing me.
I really got into the Night's Dawn, even with the resurrected soul part of the main plot. Some of the action scenes were the best things ever.
I loved Fallen Dragon.
