In a doom n gloom sort of mode today and was trying to recall a story in F&SF Magazine from the late 1990s or early 21st C. World going to hell, several countries fighting over Antarctic resources (combat going on 24/7 since it was currently summer down South on the ice), a vaguely doomed manned expedition on Mars on the verge of finding Something, a female rock star haunted by nightmares or premonitions that the Martian Something was going to be bad news for humanity. It was pretty much a 'Lady or the Tiger' ending that I remember working for me, but damned if I can recall the author or title. Kessel? JP Kelly? Swanwick? Only know for cert it was in F&SF. There was a hint in the little blurb under the title that a novel-length expansion was forthcoming. I would have read the hell out of that for sure. Similar novels that I love are Kessel's GOOD NEWS FROM OUTER SPACE and James Luceno's FEARFUL SYMMETRY and STANDING WAVE by Howard Hendrix.
