Intelligent debaters needed for Harry Potter versus Twilight debate!
yeah... i must admit, i like hp way better than twilight even though i ttly dig twi... :)sry you 'twi-hards' out there -
Twilight is not even on the same level as Harry Potter. It needs a 30-50ft ladder to even reach the bottom most layer of Harry Potter's achievement and status.
yeah, I agree! Twilight is good, but HP has a WAY better plot summary(twilight might be a bit cliche at some points) and it has a wider range of readers & fans & a more talented writer! I don't say twilight is bad, as I like it my self, and I like the characters & every thing, but Rowling has done a way better job.
Twilight can only attract teenage girls while Harry Potter is for all ages, genders, etc. Anyway, most girls only like twilight because they can't believe that there is a boy out there named Edward Cullen who is so gracious and such a gentleman.Harry Potter is for everyone and also has a moral. It in a way relates to your life even if you don't go to Hogwarts. And anyway Harry Potter shouldn't even be compared to Twilight-we all know which is better :)
harry potter is like lake tahoe, and twilight is like... i don't know... a pond. no offense, but twilight isn't really that deep, you know?
yeah, I konw! :) Harry Potter is much deeper and as Aneri said, It really does have a moral , and relates so much to the real life. Just look at the quotes extracted from the both books, the harry potters' are much more deeper , and wiser...whereas the twilight quotes are just the readers' favorite pieces, sometimes meaningless to one who hasn't read the books.
I LOVELOVELOVE harry potter, and they are my favorite books ever; however, I do like twilight, but the key word there is like. They are okay, not spectacular and yes, not as deep or meaningful as harry potter, but they are decent books (except for the last one which I will not go into at the moment). The thing that really gets me is the HYPE about these books. They are good, but definitely not THAT good. If they had the popularity of say the Pellinor books (which I love, but aren't super popular except in like australia) I would be, "Okay, yeah, they are about that level of worthiness." but they just ARE NOT the "next harry potter" and stephanie myers is NOT the "next jk rowling" because they just are not that good.
Elizabeth wrote: "I LOVELOVELOVE harry potter, and they are my favorite books ever; however, I do like twilight, but the key word there is like. I only gave Breaking Dawn one star and often random people will come up to me and tell me that they know people who hate my review because it is so mean. All the Harry Potter books get 5 stars. My husband asked me the other day what my 5 top favorite books were so I jokingly responded: "Harry Potter 6, Harry Potter 7, Harry Potter 5..." Not only is each book amazing in its own right, but the culmination of the series is as well. When are they going to pick the debaters? This is a debate I can't wait to read because everyone knows it will be one sided. Since Harry Potter has more depth it attracts more intelligent fans while Twilight only attracts lovesick girls and there isn't much to say about it. But like you said, I like Twilight ok, it's the fans and hype I can't stand.
Annalisa, I gave it one star because I felt like I needed to make a point that these books were not spectacular. The hype for these books, I'm afraid, makes me have to go one extreme or another.
I'm sure the satisfaction of bringing the ratings down from what would be straight 5 stars from twihards doesn't hurt either does it? :) You should add Breaking Dawn to your books just to give it 1 star.
In my opinion, the Twilight Saga doesn't hold a candle to Harry Potter. Now this is not to say that I didn't like the Twilight books....well, the first three that is. They are fun, addictive and engrossing. They are very simplistic and sure there are mistakes, but if Meyer does anything well in the first three books, it's character development, (which she completely looses in Breaking Dawn, but I'm not about to start ranting about that one!) BUT, in comparison, J.K. Rowling will always take the cake. I've literally read each book hundreds of times, (true story, ask my husband!) And each time I read them, I appreciate them more, absorb more, and fall in love or learn to hate each character more. She has created and captured the true magic and complexity of the story. Yes, they are my absolute favorite books hands down.I work in a book store and it thrills me to no end when a young 3rd grader or a middle aged man comes in to buy The Sorcerer's Stone. And lately, with the Twilight hype, every tween, teen, twenties, and middle aged woman who walks into the door beelines straight to the black, white and red display and grabs the next Saga book. They need to know what happens, they are addicted to the storyline, and above all, they are in LOVE with Edward Cullen.
If there is ANY comparison between the two series, it's the fact that people are reading. Folks who have never been a big reader or teenagers who hate to read are reading 1600 pages in less than a week.
People are reading and opening up their imagination.
So when people compare the two, I say no, there is no comparison. Nothing compares to the sheer brilliance of Harry Potter and the magical world Rowling has created. Stephenie Meyer has created a FANtastic world, but it seems it will be short lived. It's all hype and popularity, all cinema and Robert Pattinson (poor bloke)...it's a fad. A good one, but a fad nontheless.
Ok...I'm off my soapbox now!
a
TWILIGHT SUCKS ASS!!!!! iT IS THE WORST BOOK EVER!!!!! HARRY POTTER ROCKS!!!!!!
Hmmm... I have read both series, and I have read Most of the Harry Potter books 2 or 3 times. I LOVE Harry Potter. I was with Harry Potter when I was in the 4th grade, waaaaaaaay b4 the movies were out. I have yet to see the Twilight movie, but I have seen all of the Harry Potter movies.
Even though I LOVE vampires and I LOVE magic... I have to say, J.K. Rowling is more of a writer than Stephanie Meyer. The Twilight books well... I felt that the characters were not very well developed... Okay, maybe not 'characters' more like Edward, Jasper and Emmett. You get to know Jacob, Bella, Alice and sadly Rosalie better than one of the main characters, Edward.
My favorite part of all of the Twilight books, besides all the time that Bella spent with Jacob, was the last 3rd of Breaking Dawn. It seemed that you got to know the characters more and they had more depth (except Rose, and Emmett) Jacob, I felt, was a more developed character than Edward. I am not saying that I am part of the 'Team Edward' or 'Team Jacob' crowd either.
Hands down, Harry Potter is my series of choice. I have been, and always will be a Potter-head :D
After reading the whole Twilight series, and then just reading the first book of Harry Potter a couple days ago, I'm already in love with Harry Potter.
Twilight is just like a phase. People are going to get over it in a year or so. Harry Potter is something that's going to be treasured for centuries after. There is NOTHING that is anything like Harry Potter out in the world, but there our thousands of books with vampire romance just like Twilight out there. Jo spends so long thinking of what to write and actually planning the Harry Potter books so all the books intertwine together incredibly.
oops sorry allisonyou're right cuz im a teenage girl too
well it attracts a different audience of teenage girls is wat i meant to say
i agree. the audience for twilight is basically girls, while harry potter is both genders. i'm not saying that no boys read twilight, in fact i know a few who do. but you can't deny that mostly girls read twilight...
well, i love twilight, but you just cant compare it to harry potter! i love HP more!! you just cant!

I was just reading parents movie guide(!!!) on MSN movies, there are articles about twilight and I came across this (it was talking about wether bella is a good model for teenage girls ):This is where it's worth making a comparison to "Harry Potter." Harry solved his own problems. When he needed rescuing, his friends -- who had complementary talents and courage-quotients -- came to his aid.
Bella doesn't really have friends, at least not among her peers. She hangs out with werewolves and vampires, any one of whom could eat (or drink) her for lunch.
She's as far from being a kick-ass heroine as she can get. She's clumsy and weak. Yes, she has her attractions. She's a devoted daughter who never complains about all the cooking she has to do for her hapless dad.
But girls would be much better off following in Hermione's footsteps. Now there was a girl who could cast a spell, throw a punch, and catch the eye of an international Quidditch star (only to lose interest because he wasn't intellectual enough).

I don't think Edward & Bella and the other similar characters are bad, or they suck, or anything, but they are far beyond real life, everything is so beautiful, and lovely for them & they don't display the real meaning of perfect, like the vampires' eternal life and extreme inhuman beauty is the most honorable things they have, but beauty isn't a measure for perfectness, in HP beauty is never mentioned, it's just the other abilities, like standing for friends, fighting, and struggle for a better life that are important. vampires do have superpowers, but again they have nothing to do with life, magic is of course inhuman but the main aim of HP books is something other than showing extra-ordinary abilities, as for twilight, I can't see anything impressive other than unconditional, irrevocable and of course unreal love.
I love both of them. but harry potter is longer and easier to relate to for certain things. also, harry potter has many little plots inside the main point in each book. but the twilight books are pretty much just a really good love story
I think the major difference of Harry Potter and Twilight is the plot. Twilight, though talks about vampires, has a boring plot while HP has something to get hooked with. As for my experience, I usually finished HP book in two days but I attempted to read twilight too but sadly in more than a month, I am still at the 80th page.
I keep on looking forward to become excited, amazed and impressed with twilight but it only disappoints me. Still, I am hopeful that I can finish at least twilight never mind the next books.
I have read both series completely and in my mind, there is a clear winner that has nothing to do with my emotional attachment to any character. I am a definate Potter fan. I believe that there was a depth to the Potter story that the Cullen story lacked. The series was filled with excitement and ended with a satisfying war where good triumphed, but not without it's casualties. I was moved by the story, and had moments of mourning for the losses. I cheered for the underdog, and saw him rise above his unfortunate circumstances. I watched Harry learn to trust in others, and allow them to partake in some of the glory. I loved the way that the entire series seemed to mature along with Harry. I thought that the series was flawless. In contrast, I felt that the Twilight series had very few redeeming qualities. The characters were very flat. I felt that the relationship between Bella and Edward was very unhealthy. I was never moved by sacrifice. The story was filled with characters who looked out for themselves. I had high hopes that the story would redeem itself in the end with an amazing battle...which had been forshadowed for three books. However, there was no battle. No characters were lost in the pursuit of happiness...it just was. The story tied up in a neat little bow, and nothing bad ever happend. I thought the series was shallow. All I learned from this story was that if you whine enough, eventually you will get what you want...exactally the way you want it, and apparently vampire sex is much better then regular people sex.
I totally agree. They are two different books, sometimes you just can't compare them. It's like asking who your favorite kid is.
Twilight is just a phase.......it'll go away when all of the movies are out
it won't last long
Harry Potter is something that will last in the hearts of children, men and women forever and twilight can never be compared to it
yes, i agree. although twilight was a good love story, the whole twilight craze lasted say a year and a half, max. while the harry potter craze has never ended... i'm not criticizing meyer or anything, its just that harry potter seems more in depth while twilight was pretty umm how to say... superficial? the characters didn't really change that much, and the ending was kind of anticlimactic.
Ya know, re-reading Twilight, I started to notice things that really started to annoy me. I've read each Harry Potter 6 times and I have never got sick or irritated with it.There really is no comparison between the two.
If I had to pick between the two if I could only have one or the other, Harry Potter would win hands down.
SMeyer constantly needed to tell us how perfect and beautiful Edward is. I still kind of like Twilight, but I won't be picking them up for re-read any time soon, if ever.
ur right. it's the kinda book i would never reread, and if i ever did i would skip whole chunks of it, while hp i need to read every single page when i reread it!
Guessh wat pplz....Stephenie(i think thats how it is)Meyer.....( my friend said) starting 5th book but she didnt and sent it online? i think and then
my friend started an email to send to her and like get 250 praises for Midnight Sun.....I wrote Sorry, I'm to lazy to the friend(:
All Edward mentions about his life to Bella, is," Bella, you were sent by my (blablabla) to damn me to my personal hell..." Wow...So mean.....I would pick HP yea
This is to Twilight, "SLDFJLSEwAKLHFKDLSHEIRNWNVKDSNVUWIOETH:ALKDFJOWEFNHKVNIEUEwiewiHGEIEWUIVNEw woiriwnfvilew eihewnviewBLEH BLEH BLEH"
u know, that is just sooo fun... especially when you want to let off some steam (like me at the moment)poiwh3e rv90560b5i[0oubQIRWHJVE'[ G9P475YUTVQP3OWRIc

"Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people. … The real difference is that [Harry Potter author:] Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and [Twilight author:] Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good."- Stephen King tells USA Today
omg i saw that article... while i felt sorry for meyer (i would ttly feel bad if someone said that about my bestselling book) i also think that it's the truth.
Well, I think another reason Harry Potter is waay better than Twilight is because of the message it's sending out to young girls. I read on an editorial (I don't remember who it's by)that all Bella does is whine and sit around and make mushy gushy faces at Edward. Hermione and Ginny, on the other hand, stand up and fight the world for what's right. Hermione and Ginny are both intelligent and strong and fight for what they believe in rather than sitting around waiting for Prince Charming (which Bella doesn't do, but in general). Girls should be strong, rebellious, really just human beings. Nowadays, all teenage girls are learning is how to look like toothpicks and how to put lipstick on. Hermione and Ginny don't care what other people think of them but do what is right and do their best. And not to mention, Hermione was the girlfriend of an International Quidditch Player and Ginny was the girlfriend of Harry Potter, I mean, how much more can you say?As J.K. Rowling said, "Let my girls be Hermione's not Pansy's. Please, let them not be stupid girls!"*
