Can you pick out a passage that strikes you as particularly profound or interesting—or perhaps something that sums up the central dilemma of the book?

The passage that I played back and forth longer in my head was from the 3rd book (chapter 9, page 108) and I think it explains a lot of Reyes' actions towards Charley. The scene takes place in Amador's house, she is handcuffed in the bathroom while Reyes is taking a shower.

Even looking at it from a different perspective, what would it have done to the kids had they seen Reyes handcuffed and taken away? He didn’t hurt me. He’d never hurt me. He’d literally saved my life on several occasions, and I pay him back over and over with doubt and distrust. Then again, he had held a knife to my throat.
“I was keeping you quiet,” he said, inching closer. Water dripped down his face, his hair hanging in wet tangles over his forehead. He watched me like a predator watches his prey, his eyes unblinking, his lashes spiked with moisture. He raised a long arm and braced it over my head.
“Would you really hurt my parents?” I asked.
His lashes lowered as his gaze rested on my mouth. “I’d probably go after your sister first.”
Why did I bother? “You’re such an ass.” I would have pushed him away had my hands been free.
He shrugged. “Gotta keep up the illusion. Someday you’re going to figure out exactly what you’re capable of—” He leaned in close. “—then where will I be?”

hmm I agree with Ines with the bathroom scene. and to pair with that, the scene that comes to mind is the shower scene later on in the book when in the flesh reyes drys charley's hair for her as she holds onto him. That was definitely a tug on my heartstrings. Kinda like, why does our relationship have to be so complicated and hurtful. :'(

Ines...that's perfect! He basically admits to never harming her but needing to feel in control. :-)

I enjoyed the scene with Owen Vaughn where we FINALLY learned what he had against Charley. It made you feel for him and Charley was so upset about her part in his experience. Then he realized that she really didn't take his jeans and wear them on purpose. He's forgiven her and on her side now, I can't wait to see if he'll be helping her in the future.

Page 12 Charlie: "I still don't understand how you are here?". Reyes: "I told you, you summoned me. You always summon me. You've always summon me. You always had the power to call me whenever you want or need me, Dutch. Or haven't you figured that put yet?" ...Charlie: "No, you've always come to me when I needed you. When I was in danger." ...Reyes: "It's always been you."

This strikes me as relevant or important because I always assumed Rcoils an sense when Charlie was in danger, but he is telling her that he cannot. She has some kind of power over him and I wonder why she does? Did he have to submit to be under her powers in order to live life on Earth with her? Or was she always more powerful because she is from the Heavens and he is from "Hell"? Another question to ponder.... :-)

That's a good point Mel. I always assumed that Reyes was sensing when Charley was in danger too, not that she had the power and was actually summoning him. It does beg the question of how she's able to summon him.

Oh, that scene that he dries her hair is soooo sweet! It reminded me of the scene in "Out of Africa" when Denys washes Karen hair. I also felt a pang inside, good passage.

I've found this confusing because Charley seems to think she cannot summon Reyes and Reyes thinks she does but there's probably more to it. I don't think she would have summoned him as a child... though maybe her powers do that automatically lol

It's like the utmost romantic think he could have done, isn't it? When I watch the movie, that's THE scene I want to see :)
