Rebecca Jamie, I bought the BBC Cranford and have given it away as a gift,it is wonderful.

Martha (marthas48) North and South is wonderful, too! I loved it so much that I bought my own copy.

Denise (dulcinea3) | 400 comments I have that set, with the three miniseries in it, and I love it!!! I had seen and loved them all prior to buying the set. Unless they've updated, it does not include the sequel, Return to Cranford, so I have that separately.

Nina (ninarg) | 106 comments They are all excellent, so I would say that it is definitely worth it, Jamie. Cranford is my all time favourite mini series.

Thanks to all of you. I'll be watching North and South to night from netflix. Then I'll try and buy it with Cranford and wives and daughters.

Marialyce Jamie, you will not be disappointed.....I do love Matthew Macfayden. He is super dreamy....
He is in North and South...

I can't wait till I get home from work to watch north and south. But first I have to watch the next disc in the forsyte saga. Is it time to go home yet? And then I also have to watch little dorite witch i baought for mom. So I can wait on that.

message 9: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Little Dorrit has been airing again on PBS the first installment was this last Sunday.

message 10: by Denise (new)

Denise (dulcinea3) | 400 comments Matthew Macfadyen is the male lead in Little Dorrit, too. I don't remember him being in North and South, but Richard Armitage, who plays the male lead in that, is dreamy, too! Brendan Coyle is also in North and South. He is in Lark Rise to Candleford, but is probably better known lately for playing Bates in Downton Abbey.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

We did not get it here in maine. We had Sence & senibility. Witch was really good.

I thought it was Richard on the dvd I know him from Robin hood and a miss marple show. I just added Lark Rise to Candleford to my netflix list. It sounded good. I love mustly anything the from the BBC. Why can't we have tv like that? Insted we have realty tv no offance to anyone. :)

LauraT (laurata) | 493 comments I've loved all BBC represemtation of Haskell's works; they're really well done.

Just started to watch North and South last night. I have to buy the dvd and the book. I'll buy my mom the Elizabeth Gaskell dvd collection and just keep North and South for my self. I do have to say that I'm seeing some Pride and Prejusice between John and Margaret. Am I the only one who sees this?

message 15: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthas48) No, it's there Jamie. It's like the working class version of P&P. Quite the love story! If you have extras with the DVD you're watching, do check them out. I love the interview with Richard Armitage.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

So far I just have the writers (I think they are the writers) comentary. I listen to the first one so far. Becouse I have to watch part two to night. Then I have to wait till disc two comes to the house witch will be at least a week. Don't know if I can wait. Though I still have Little Dorrit to watch and that is 4 disc and now mom owns that so that might hold me over.

Wasn't Richard Armitage great in Robin Hood? Especially the last season, when he looked all unkempt and brooding!

I love Lark Rise to Candleford. A very gentle, old-fashioned kind of show.

Just bought from Amazon the Elizabeth Gaskell Collection that has Wives and daughters/Cranford/North and South. I could not help myself :)

I rented just one disk of Robin Hood from season 3, simply so I could watch Richard Armitage as Guy of Gisborne and Toby Stephens as Prince John.

Martha (marthas48) They are both wonderful in Robin Hood. My favorite Toby Stephens is the Jane Eyre BBC production. I think it's from 2006.

He made an excellent Rochester, one of my favorites. He and Ruth Wilson are so cute together! I loved him as Duke Orsino in Twelfth Night as well. That's an older one, way back in the 90s, I believe.

message 22: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthas48) I haven't seen that one. I'll have to look for it. He certainly has his mother's talent.

message 23: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 82 comments Love that version of Twelth Night, Toby Stephens, Helena Bonham-Carter, Imogen Stubbs and set in Victorian/Edwardian period.

message 24: by Jo (new)

Jo (deronda) Hmm, North and South ... I loved the book, really, but the BBC film version wasn't really my cup of tea. I'm not saying the actors did a bad job; it's just that I imagined the characters differently.

SarahC (sarahcarmack) | 1418 comments I much prefer the novel to the film of North and South. Yes, the actors were very talented, but I think the script portrayed John as a violent man and that strayed too far from the original. There was something strange about the first proposal scene that I didn't think was true to the story either. Richard Armitage was glorious, nevertheless.

message 26: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthas48) Yes, he was :-) I'm planning to reread North & South soon. It's been a 2 or 3 years.

message 27: by Lariela (new)

Lariela | 41 comments I've only seen the miniseries, but really liked it. I'll get to the novel soon, I hope.

I will be revisiting the book next month with another group here. Its been quite a while since my last read too. I loved the adaptation despite the little changes they'd made but then I "discovered" the book (and Mrs G) from the adaptation.
