the story ranges from the cruel intent of the Prioress against pregnant Agnes who merely wanted to escape and came so tantalizingly close and the growing desires of the Abbot, Ambrosio as the chapter unfolds. Unless they are personally experiencing the pangs of sexual desire, the sanctimonious condemnation of any person showing any sort of evidence of sexual desire is swiftly dispatched.
Agnes predicts Ambrosio's downfall when he finds himself tempted. We shall see! He and the Prioress are despicable creatures!
Was anyone surprised to learn Rosario was, in fact, a woman named Matilda? Did you suspect homosexual yearnings? Just curious.
Do you find Matilda a bit manipulative? What are her real motives? I suspected something was up when she confessed to having the Madonna portrait modeled after herself.
Didn't the doctor figure out Matilda was a woman? Couldn't all the monks tell when they saw her without her cowl over her face?
