Mary (marybt) | 46 comments (Mike - I wasn't sure where to put this thread, feel free to move it as you find appropriate.)

I have always loved Clyde Edgerton, with the one exception of his new one The Night Train: A Novel But that's neither here nor there. I'm currently reading The Floatplane Notebooks which is the best Edgerton book I've ever read! It has all the attributes that made me fall in love with him in the first place.

I cannot stop laughing about "natural suspension." In my line of engineering, we quite often design things that have no precedent, guide, etc. We have to use some logical assumptions and just try things. One of my contemporaries calls it "black magic." I believe I'm going to start calling it "natural suspension."

I was crying I was laughing so hard when Meredith is in the well and Papa is explaining that the post is supporting the house by natural suspension!

Mary, you posted in the exact place it needed to be. My love of Edgerton goes back to his first novel, Raney and has continued, yes, even "The Night Train," although I will agree it is not my favorite. Edgerton would make a wonderful group read for the future. So keep that in mind when you put your nominations cap on!

Thanks so much for posting.

Mike

Clyde Edgerton was my brother's 11th grade English teacher. This was before Raney was published. Carson said he was pretty cool, an interesting and funny guy. My father-in-law interviewed him for a TV show called "North Carolina Now" a few years ago and said the same thing about him. I myself have never met him, but I do love his books. My favorite is "Walking to Egypt".

Sorry, senior moment! "Walking Across Egypt."

I have the same ridiculous cold. I used it as an excuse to read.

I wish I could concentrate enough. I seem to be only able to concentrate on mysteries right now. 5 days and counting. For some reason I can read Wolf Hall at times too. I wonder if it may be a mild case of the flu since I had the flu shot? Who knows! Both are rampant around here.

I had a flu shot too, but who knows? I've been hearing horror stories of this thing lasting 2-4 weeks. I only consider it flu if I can't get out of bed. I'm on day 10. Not a great start to 2013, but it has to get better, right?

My wife and I have been dealing with the cold, as well. She got it first. I got it six days later. She's working on two weeks. No fever, but sneezing and a nagging cough. It has slowed my reading down. Like Sue, I haven't had the concentration. I'm still chugging along on The Architecture of the Arkansas Ozarks since I've done Lightning Bug. Hope you're better soon.

I do hope you're feeling better soon, Sue.

Sue | 760 comments Thanks Mike. Tonight I suddenly feel a bit more human, but I think it will be a few more days. Maybe soon I can tackle some other reading! You had this too I think.

message 16: by Sue (new)

Sue | 760 comments Just caught up with the earlier posts Mike and I see you and your wife both have it. Yuk!

It's funny how we all can read different types of books (or nothing at all) when we don't feel well. I definitely feel more human and I know I haven't had the flu, just this stupid cold. So I should be able to tackle a bit more reading soon!

Get well everyone!! Rest and Read and drink those fluids. (hee hee)

Jessie J (subseti) | 295 comments Same cold here, sounds like. Everyone had flu shot, daughter got it first, then me, about a week later. Lasting about 2 weeks. Can only concentrate on trash!

Exactly! Now a week later I finally left my house and bought some food. Yippee!! Of course it's a nice warm day for January today--strange. And I can read again. I seem to be recovering pretty well though I'm much weaker than expected. More reading on tap.

I agree. Let's do one of his as a group read!
