I am new in this group and I am delighted to be part of it. Just like you, since my discovery of John Thornton, and of North and South in general, I always talk about this book to my friends, I want everyone to know this masterpiece and I wish it to be a reference... maybe... or not because North and South is like my little secret garden. :)
I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes I want to shout out to the world about this great author/story. But at other times, I feel privileged to be one of the select few who have found and adore North and South. It definitely feels like a secret club. :)
Well it has been my mission since 09 to bring people to the light. I used to get irritated whenever I mentioned N&S and someone would say, "oh you mean the John Jakes novel that was serialized starring Patrick Swayze? " . I must admit though I'm encountering that less and less which is a good sign..or at least it means that my circle friends are "enlightened" LOL
Thankfully, the 'other' N&S was televised long ago and many aren't remembering it any more. I'm glad you are working to 'evangelize' the un-enlightened!

in period drama. I think Gaskell deserves her place under the sun.
When the legions around you seem to fall into misty-eyed raptures at the mention of ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ ‘Jane Eyre,’ or even ‘Downton Abbey,’ do you feel the impulse to shake them from this mass stupor and reveal to them the secret you have discovered in finding John Thornton?
Sorry. Maybe that’s just me.
