Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments Do you listen to books? OR is that cheating? Do you only listen to books you have already read? Or do you listen to books so you won't have to read them? Why listen to the books? What do you do while listening to the books?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Nope I just read, I might try them in the future cause my eyesight is getting bad...

message 3: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments I only listen to book I love and want to read all the time, but that would be impractical. So I have "The Hobbit" the "Lord of the Rings trilogy" "Enders Game" and "The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy" on CD. I listen to them while doing laundry, clean my room, while at work, when drawing, and doing the dishes. I love them! For car trips they are great too!

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

nice, and convenient..;)

message 5: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments Yeah, it really helps with the boredom of the everyday mundane tasks.

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

Music help me with that, and my racing-story-making-mind ;)

message 7: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments Yeah I listen to music a lot too, but I have less music than most with only 8 CD's and no songs from online, so after a while I get a little tiered of the same music all the time.

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

How about the radio?

message 9: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments WE live in a valley so we don't get the radio, I hear Pandora works but I haven't tried it yet.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, I see. Do you like YA romance books?

message 11: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments Not really. I find them dull and most are the same plot with different side story's. I also hate how in YA the parents are always terrible, the girl is always the same "Woe is me, I can't do anything but I wish I could and if anyone say's anything to try and help me they are crushing who I am" thing going on. I could go on, but I won't.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Not the one I'm talking about actually...

message 13: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments Oh really? You should start a topic for it in "Individual Books" and tell me about it!

message 14: by Haley (new)

Haley Pandora is pretty great, I use it a lot, especially at work.

But as for audio books, I think they take too long (personal opinion, I totally don't care if you guys refute this :D). I'm a fast reader, and I also don't particularly like the voices of the people who read them because that's NOT the way the characters sound :) So I listen to my music and read my books! But I do completely understand why other people like them

message 15: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments I listened to "Spider Wick Chronicles" on CD and when reading the back found out if was read by the guy who plays Luke Skywalker in Star-Wars. I laughed so hard after that. I was having a hard time paying attention to the story and not the fact that Mark Hamill was reading it!

Other then that I find it most of the people who read the books to have nice voices. Except the lady who read Valentine in "Enders Game" has the most annoying voice in history! But as I only get about two hours a day to read like to listen to books through out the day.

I have listened to the "Hobbit" so many times that I fall asleep to the voice of Rob Ingalls (who reads it.)

♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (tabi_card) I have never listened to an audio book...so I don't know what it would be like. But I guess I'd start with one I already know...:)

EXACTLY!!!! In fact, isn't that what most YA books are all about regardless of genre??? lol
But there are a few nice ones....:)

message 18: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments I love to listen to books while on a trip. I like the idea of reading with your husband. I love to discuss a book right after reading it so if someone was reading it with me that would be a lot of fun.

Hence starting this group!

message 19: by Haley (new)

Haley I hate waiting for other people to finish books when I want to discuss them! I know just what you mean, Christa. I recommend books to my friends all the time, and sometimes one of those friends and I go get new books together but I'm a quick enough reader that I finish like a week before she does. And then I have to wait and not spoil anything for her, even though I'm bursting with things to say. It's incredibly frustrating...

message 20: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments I got all the Eragon books before my brother, who is a painfully slow reader. I was bursting at the dinner table to talk about it but I restrained myself.

message 21: by Haley (new)

Haley That was very kind of you :D My family does not read nearly as much or the same kinds of books I do (my mom will sometimes, if I bug her about it because I need someone to talk to about a certain book) so I don't have that problem. My friends though...? Different story. I'm shoving books at them all the time, and they take FOREVER. So inconsiderate

message 22: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments HAhahaha! I had to laugh when my older brother gave me a book about WWII to read. It took him about three weeks and I had it done in three days flat. He thought I was lying when I told him I had finished.

message 23: by Haley (new)

Haley Nice! I hate it when people don't believe you read it though. Have you ever had anyone try to quiz you on what happened, like they're making sure you didn't just skip over the middle or something? It's ridiculous

message 24: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments No, we do that for fun. Other than that one time I haven't had anyone doubt what I read. But my brother did ask me a lot of questions, I just thought he was being nice.

message 25: by ♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (new)

♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (tabi_card) Ok, glad to see I'm not the only supernaturally fast reader out there...lol.
I read, like a three hundred page book in an hour or two...so yeah.
I read Inheritance in one day. Les Miserables in day and a half, and countless of YA books in like tow hours per book.
So yeah, I read fast.
And yes, it is so annoying waiting for other people to finish books after I've read them...especially when I think it's just so AWESOME and want to talk about it RIGHT NOW!!! ;)
But like, when my whole fam reads a series...we talk about it for weeks afterwards.
A few of those are, Fablehaven, Percy Jackson an other RR books, Hunger Games, and most recently the 39 Clues series. Which, I'd heartily recommend those. Even though they are targeted too younger audiences...they're really good. Kept even me guessing. (and that's saying a lot seeing I can most of the time get a Sherlock Holmes case figured out about a third of the way through.) lol

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm with you there, Tabi...I read very fast as well. ;)

message 27: by ♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (new)

♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (tabi_card) High five! ;)

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

You betcha! High five to you, too! ;)

message 29: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (andrea_angelyna) Hooray for the audiobooks thread! I hope no one considers it cheating. Since my discovery of the audiobook section in the library I've been able to vastly expand my intake of literature. I have one of those unfortunate jobs where while it is vital to be there nine hours a day, it lacks any mental stimulation whatsoever. Paper pushing becomes a lot easier when you're listening to Bram Stoker's Dracula read by a full cast of actors (Tim Curry!), for example. I also frequently have two three hour drives during my weekend, and in the evenings music puts me to sleep, obv not a good thing while driving.

At home, as I'm sure any working independent adult can attest, there are myriad other things that forcibly occupy the time that would otherwise be given to sitting with a good book. If anyone has any recommendations for good ones, please send them my way. I have plenty of recommendations myself.

message 30: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments I am listening to the "Game of Thrones" series on CD right now and it is really good. It is only read by one person but he does several different voices and I am finding it very enjoyable.

message 31: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (andrea_angelyna) That's good to hear Christa, as Clash of Kings is up next for me after Dracula :)
My go-to audios for zoning out time are:
The Red Pyramid - these actors read for kids, but are easy to get caught up in.
Three Men in a Boat - read by Hugh Laurie!
Neverwhere - read by the author, Neil Gaiman.
Fool - read by the hilarious Euan Morton (warning: *extremely* raunchy)
The Wee Free Men - read by Stephen Briggs; His voices make me giggle.

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments No way! I had no idea Hugh Laurie read anything, I am going to find that right now.

Another awesome book I love to listen to is "Hitch hikers guide to the Galaxy" read by Stephen Fry.

message 33: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (andrea_angelyna) Stephen Fry reads it? Oh my goodness. I have the version read by Douglas Adams, which is fantastic.

Funny you should mention them together -I am such a fan of Stephen Fry & Hugh Laurie together in Jeeves & Wooster. I'll definitely have to go find that myself!

message 34: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments You read my mind, I love Jeeves & Wooster. I own them all.
