I forgot to mention that you'll need to have Facebook in order to log into the chat rooms on BCRL. If you don't have a Facebook account, you won't be able to participate. Sorry for mentioning that late ... too many things I'm trying to keep track of today.

CHANGE: You do not need to have a Facebook account to register. If you have a Facebook account, you can easily register with one click. See the chat rooms and forums for the 'Login with Facebook' buttons. Original rationale provided below (msg 31) ...

Greece Karpusi (scotland) What is BCRL?

Derrolyn Anderson Oh crap.

@Greece (yiasou!)
This is where the online chat rooms are hosted.
BCRL = Book Club Reading List
http://bookclubreading.com/

@Derrolyn - If you don't have a FB account, you could always create one with an email address that you use for collecting spam.

message 5: by Greece (new)

Greece Karpusi (scotland) O-Ok.

message 6: by Derrolyn (last edited Apr 06, 2012 01:49PM) (new)

Derrolyn Anderson Thanks. Yeah... I'm oddly Facebook-resistant in an increasingly Facebook-run world. What's a hermit to do?

message 7: by Robyn (new)

Robyn (ifluctuate) I didn't even know facebook had chat rooms? how do i join the chat on facebook? can you tell me step by step, for someone who has no clue what they're doing?

message 8: by Book Club (new)

Book Club Reading List (bookclubreadinglist) | 28 comments Mod
BCRL has chat rooms. In order to login, you must use a Facebook account

message 9: by Derrolyn (new)

Derrolyn Anderson Could I log in with my daughter's/friend's/husband's account? Because I have access/permission to all of those...

message 10: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Yeah, I would be logging in on my dad's or brother's if we can do that.

message 11: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) Well, I don't have a Facebook account, and really don't want one. So I'll be leaving the group. I wish you good luck with this experiment!

message 12: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (carrieaj) I don't do facebook or twitter. Plus I get most of my books from BN so I don't think I will be able participate. So I think I will also be leaving the group. Good luck.

message 13: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) I have to admit, I'm not sure if I like the FB end of this either. I happen to like my semi-anonymous stage name, and I have friends in FB whom I don't want to dump a review or recommend a book to directly.

Of course, I could always make G-mail email address for Curmudgeon then turn that into a FB account, but then, I wouldn't have any FB Friends...not that I have a lot of FB friends now. (Being a Curmudgeon has an efficatious side to it, but, the nature of a Curmudgeon doesn't lend itself well to makeing lots of friends.)

message 14: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Haha, well it is a tough life for a Curmudgeon.

message 15: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Yes, it's not a pleasant job, but somebody has to do it.

(B-{D>)

message 16: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Well who else would be, your CV was immense!

message 17: by The Pirate Ghost (last edited Apr 09, 2012 01:06PM) (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Well, that might be more genetics... (cough)

(uh...what's a "CV")

message 18: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle What you give with 'I-am-so-great-hire-me-here-are-my-qualifications' when you apply for a job.

message 19: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) ah...so it is genetics.

message 20: by midnightfaerie (new)

midnightfaerie I'd be your friend, Crumudgeonie!

message 21: by Kb (new)

Kb I don't have a Facebook account either, and don't wish to create one. I wish yall good luck with the club and good luck to the aspiring authors!

message 22: by Derrolyn (last edited Apr 10, 2012 01:05AM) (new)

Derrolyn Anderson Wow! There are others. I thought I was the only Facebook resistant person left on the planet. I blame it on my checkered past...

message 23: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle There are many but people don't notice us becuase we don't update our facebook pages saying we don't have FB accounts!! Our status does not exist!

message 24: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) AIM (America Online Instant Messaging) is free, and you can build chatrooms to discuss anything. Yahoo has a similar system, etc. Some will interconnect with lots of sources.

Is there a reason these discussions have to be on face book? (nevermind, the marketing power of a massive "like" wave on the great Ocean of FB users.) Can those who do not want a facebook connection still participate in reads and reviews through good reads and skip the chatrooms?

Don't missunderstand me, I understand the reason behind facebook. That's a powerful marketing tool and, as I interpret this experiment, it's intended that we sort of "market" the books we like. I tend to do that with my reviews already. I'm perfectly okay with that concept because there are a lot of new authors with good books that need a way of getting noticed. It's just that, I think we are disenfranchising a segement of the population if it's FB users only.

@Janine, your always welcome to be my friend your Janiness. Thank you. (You know I'm blushing behind the screen, don't you?)

@Nicolle, you are right. Unless you are an activist against facebook, if you don't have an FB Account you have no voice amongst those who believe facebook is a normal part of their lives.

Facebook is like the Borg on Star Trek "...you will be assimilated, resistance is futile..." some people push back against that kind of thing. Isn't that why Macintosh and Apple are in business?
Push back against Micro-soft?

Hey Curmudgeon,

Your post had me cracking up- you hit the nail on the head! My family has been been mac-based for years, and our business has run up against some hassles (interfacing with UPS shipping software, etc.) Apple has grown huge though ;). I finally threw up my hands and got a pc laptop just to write on, since Word is essential for all e-book conversions.
I ALMOST made the Borg comparison about Facebook, but chickened out, afraid you'd all think I was a Trekkie geek... (I kinda am, a little)
Guess I'm not as big a rebel as I thought!

message 26: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Well, the Borg thing really works better with micro-soft, but FB is close enough. (B-{D>)

And, I'm okay with being a trekkie...tomorrow, I'll hose out another cliche' and become yet a different kind of geek, or maybe another knotch in the old book (Gun) belt?

My wife thinks the Tv Show "The Big Bang Theory" is a documetary of my high school and early days with the Navy.

I hope that's a compliment.

message 27: by Derrolyn (new)

Derrolyn Anderson Yay for geeks of all kinds!!!

message 28: by midnightfaerie (new)

midnightfaerie @hugh - oh my gosh, i LOVE big bang theory! one of my favorite hobbies is eurogaming/ameritrash gaming and they play those games on there! AND wil wheaton who has guest starred on there has an online show where he explains the games that i watch all the time. favorite show by far.
i knew there was a reason i liked u so much beside the fact ur cute when u blush! :)

@Derrolyn - I second that!!!

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) I'm the smart one.

A quick word about using Facebook ...

the reason I decided to use Facebook for signing into chat and the forums was to prevent spam. This is a daily hassle to moderate on my other sites.

I figured most people signing in would already have Facebook accounts. Seeing the responses here, I've changed the system to allow anyone registering an account to have access to both chat and the forums.

CHANGE: You do not need to have a Facebook account to register. If you have a Facebook account, you can easily register with one click. If the spam gets out of hand, then I may change it back.

message 32: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Cool. Thanks!

message 33: by Derrolyn (last edited Apr 10, 2012 06:50PM) (new)

Derrolyn Anderson Whew! Dodged that one. I know that one day soon I'll be dragged kicking and screaming into social networking - twin kids heading off to college in the fall...

message 34: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) And I thought I'd be dragged into the sunlight... and burst into flames and... nevermind. Thirsty?

message 35: by midnightfaerie (new)

midnightfaerie @nicolle - i can't claim to be as smart as any. if i look at myself back in college, i was probably penny. :) my fav character tho, is sheldon - what's urs?

message 36: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle I love Leanord (spelling?!) he seems so chuffed when Penny kisses him! Sheldon makes me laugh, he just has no clue about some things.

@Hugh - The smart one?!?! They are ALL smart!! :P

message 39: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Hey, there's nothing wrong with keeping your pants up!

Hahha, or the outfit on the episode where he goes to the goth bar, or to Sheldon's house in Texas.

message 41: by midnightfaerie (new)
