Goodreads Sri Lanka discussion

I thought, with the small number of people we have at the moment, that a general on-going discussion would be suitable. So tell us what you are reading at the moment. They don't have to be Sri Lankan books.



Right now I'm reading Anna Karenina with my group and The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien and "Selected Poems" by Alfred Tennyson.

I'd recommend all three! But Tennyson, only if you are a poetry fan and The Silmarillion if you are a Tolkien fan, because that's pretty much the history book and "the Bible" of Middle Earth! :) Anna Karenina, well everybody should read that. Make sure you find yourself the P/V Translation.

I am reading 'Russia House' by John le Carre, which is a spy story set in the late eighties, when Gorbachev's Russia is crumbling under the weight of corruption and malfeasance. The thing about 'Russia House' is that I believe it is the only book by le Carre which has an active love component. It's not an over bearing component, yet it is subtly there.

I am planning to get to Tolstoy eventually, but right now still finishing up Dostoevsky.

And I cannot do more than one book at a time. My mind is too linear to grapple with multiple books.

We are currently re-visiting Tolstoy.

I'm currently reading "Islands" by Dan Sleigh and "Zorba the Greek" by Nikos Kazantzakis. Nothing Sri Lankan right now. "Islands" I'm not so crazy about because it's all confusing and I think it's the translation problem but Zorba the Greek is great!

I'm also following Anna Karenina discussions as well.

I'm a slow reader. Right now I'm reading "Hidden Flower"
by Pearl S. Buck.

I just finished The Stand by Stephen King. I was listning to the audio book and it took me about 1 1/2 months to finish the whole thing. It was so boring at first. But as I began to digest it, it became quite interesting. HUGE book and GREAT read (Listen) I say.
About my next book will be Case Histories by Kate Atkinson. I have read Behind The Scenes at the Museum / Human Croquet / Emotionally Weird And loved it.

I just started reading I Capture the Castle and two others which I didn't start yet. I'll re-post.

Really? I love the language used by Atkinson and her wit. You said it's scary and now I'm eager to finish the book. I'm so much into this horror or let's say scary genre. So far no scary movie has been capable of scaring me. But there are plenty of books that gave me nightmares.

The thing is I live alone for studying purposes in another country, which kind of adds to the fear factor. :)

Currently reading Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie. This is my second attempt at reading it, and I'm finding it absolutely brilly. It's a mix of fact and fiction of pre and post independent India , with a colorful cast of characters. Can't imagine why I didn't finish it at the first attempt :)

Ah, I had just recently finished reading this book. I was wondering along almost similar lines; why I hadn't started reading Rushdie earlier. Now I am reading 'Head Hunters' by Jo Nesbo.

I am currently reading the translation of Not without my daughter. This is very shocking.

I finished reading A Road Side Saga byAruna Shantha Nissanka and currently reading another Sri Lankan novel called The Maze. Katherine Mansfield's short stories and some academic reading are among my readings these days.

I am currently reading The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. It is like a beautiful, lyrical, wondrous dream.

I'm reading classics these days Brave New World and Snow Country, nothing by Sri Lankan authors.

Currently reading My Man Jeeves, by P. G. Wodehouse.

At Present am reading The Power of NOW by ECKHART TOLLE this is my second attempt at it

I am currently reading A FEAST FOR CROWS and FISH OMNIBUS. juggling both since June! Just need to find time between work, house chores etc. Being pregnant has slowed me down quite a bit.

Right now it's Sh*t My Dad Says a memoir kinda thing by Justin Halpern

I'm reading THE NAME OF THE ROSE. Its not an easy read but very intriguing!

I have read it before (The Name of the Rose) it rambles on but it is worth the read. Can learn so much from it besides the story. :)

Started to read "Crime and Punishment" by Dostoyevsky. This book's so compelling like most of the classic Russian novels
