When I taught Learning Disabilities a few years ago, I experimented with different music while they worked. I kept track of what I played and how well they did their work. One of the oddities was that they worked better to music they didn't like. I found that symphonies were too ponderous and piano concertos were disruptive, but generally baroque music produced the best results.I have a good friend who can read or study or almost anything while watching the TV or listening to music or anything else. I am in awe of him. I have always preferred complete quiet when I read or work and find that if there is music, I keep losing track of what I am doing by stopping to listen to it. I must not be smart enough to be able to do both at the same time.
I am probably like your friend. I like the background noise--but that's because I have tinnitis (SP), my ears ring.
I often listen to classical music or any nonvocal music.

Odd coincidence that I have tinnitus in my left ear. AT some recent time in my life it was rather serious because it was something I couldn't deal with easily. Fortunately even though I have a hearing loss, I seem to have learned to live with it.We should discuss what you have done for it: I have been using a Ginkgo Biloba extract for several months and am also trying Kudzu root. I'll let you know if anything happens.
I know what you mean about vocal music: I start singing along with it and lose all track of what I was doing. I hate to say it, but I am probably one of those who can't walk and chew gum at the same time.. and I am not even a blond!
Rhonda, I've not tried Gingko Bilboa (sp) for it, but just live with it. Think it might be time for a hearing aid.
I've noticed that when I am in crowds, I can't track a conversation because of the loud background noise, and I know this is because of the tinnitus.
