Betty | 3702 comments Two more books by Japanese authors are mentioned by Nasrul, a new member, for summer reading. One is

In Praise of Shadows by Junichirō Tanizaki.

Another is

Deep River by Shusaku Endo.

Both have open topics for comments in the '(Good 'Ole) Summertime in Japan' folder.

Betty | 3702 comments The Makioka Sisters is suggested by Sue. The story is about a large Japanese family and is set during the late 1930s-early 1940s era. There are many available summaries. For comments, there is a thread in the discussions.

Betty | 3702 comments In Lesley's choice of Shipwrecks, nine-year-old Isaku narrates the story of a seacoast village, in which the villagers choose an unusual means to survive.
