It has been a long time since I read this.. but I remember loving it. I wish I could remember!! I have never read any of his other books and wonder what people think of those.
I finished it, it was good! The ending was very ambiguous (intentionally so from what I've read in author interviews). I will probably seek out more books by this author... this is the type of YA fiction I like best.
The book was very interesting! I read it in junior high but I think I would get more out of it now. To Angie, Number the Stars (also by Lois Lenski) was very enjoyable and worth the read.
I know that I'm just jumping in on a month old topic, BUT... this book is divine. Also, to Poppy, I did *not* see the color thing coming at all. My personal view on this book is that if you don't like it, it's because you simply don't understand it. And, to Sarah, the author of The Giver is Lois Lowry, not Lois Lenski.Anyway, love the book, and the dedication only made it better.
This was one of my favorite books in middle school. I never read the rest of the books in the series but I'm not sure it was a series when I read it.
I just bing-read the whole quartet! I loved it! The way the books flowed, and how there were questions that remained, even at the end of the series (at least for me). I cried during The Giver specifically, but I think I'm just too emotional lol I was excited when I heard about the movie, but not so much anymore after watching the trailer...

So far I am really enjoying this book. I have had it on my list forever, finally just began it and am wondering what took me so long.
Did anyone else see the whole color thing coming a mile away? I am assuming, although I could be wrong, that it was meant to be a surprise to the reader, not just to Jonas.
I found myself wondering, is this the fault of the author, or are readers just awfully good at figuring these things out now, after so many years of authors trying to surprise us? If we were to try to write it differently, what could you do to make it more of a surprise? I noticed Lowry used the phrase "light eyes" and also referred to the ocean, so I think those words together made me notice the lack of the word blue.
I'm still reading this by the way. I'll be back in a few days after I've finished... just in case there are any big surprises at the ending.
Anyway, curious what other people thought.
