Greetings young Nephilim, Downworlders, and Mundanes.

I'm glad you found this note for your life could depend on it. My name is Gregory Herondale and I used to be the number one guide for young Nephilim such as yourself. You're probably wondering what on Earth Nephilim are. We are the Shadowhunters. We protect mundanes, or regular people, from creatures called demons. Demons can vary much so from the smallest little worm to the most ornate Greater Demon. But be warned, they are all dangerous.
What is so special about Shadowhunters? What separates us from mundanes? Well, for one thing, we carry Angelic blood from the Angel Raziel. Centuries ago, the Angel Raziel rose from Lake Lyn and mixed the blood of Johnathan Shadowhunter and his own and placed it in a scared artifact called the Mortal Cup. He offered those who could stand such power a drink and they became the first Shadowhunters. The blood of the Angel allows us to be Marked with special runes from the Gray Book that can give us an assortment of abilities.
Iratzes for healing.
Nyns for night vision.

And several more. We use a tool called a stele to apply these Marks, usually before a battle. Mundanes or unready Shadowhunters who Mark themselves soon become one of the Foresaken. You can think of them as zombie-like creatures whom usually join the leagues of evil.

Now, let's say you are not one of the Angel's children or a mundane. You are a Downworlder. That includes vampires, werewolves, warlocks, and faeries. Everyone believes those beings are just myths but everyone is very, very wrong.

How do we stay so secret, you ask? We uses Marks of Glamour that mask us from the mundane world, Downworlders use it too.

Being a Shadowhunter, a Downworlder, or a Demon is a great burden to take on. Do you believe you're strong enough to do so? Let's test your skill.

Sincerely,
Gregory A. Herondale
