Review: I have never read anything by Palahniuk (I keep wanting to spell it with "ui" instead of "iu", forgive me if this happens), but I had a vague idea of what I was getting into. I know this book was made into a movie. I don't think I'd want to see anything that was written in this book on the screen. I'm good. Let me know how it went.
It's a story about a sex addict who works at a colonial reenactment village (it's odd) with an elderly mother that needs care he cannot afford. He pretends to choke on food at restaurants (every night) in order to get money out of the people who save his life (this part is entirely logical; that's sarcasm). At some point he actually believes he's Jesus come again; I'm not spoiling anything there by the way, it's how he comes to that "realization" that's... interesting. There is some messed up stuff that happens in this book. It's very much about addiction, all types of addiction, how it manifest and the challenges people go through dealing with it.

This book was a lot of fun if you're a bibliophile as the main character is a restorer of old books. There is quite a bit of description covering the techniques of bookbinding/restoration as well as the differences between restoration versus conservation. Given the quality of readers in this group I figured this book would be a good recommendation. ^_~

Review: This novel centers on a young male anthropologist who spends a year in the Faroe Islands working on his dissertation. There are descriptions of the people and the scenery. The descriptions of the “interior life” of the anthropologist seems realistic. Recommended for those interested in how life is lived in remote Arctic areas.

The Powhatan Dilemma: how to preserve their lands and independence in the face of a technologically superior civilization that wants to acquire both. Recommended for people who like to read narrative histories; who are interested in early American history; and who want to learn more about Pocahantas.
