What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

When I was in the fifth grade (this has been about fifteen years ago), my teacher read a book aloud to my class about a young girl-- who I imagine was probably around the same age I was (10-11)-- who was abused by her mother. I don't remember a father being in the picture at all. I don't remember any graphic depictions of violence.

What I DO remember very clearly was a scene in which the mother displayed a rare act of kindness toward the girl on her birthday. She took her daughter out to a nice restaurant and let her get a fun, short haircut.
