Seawood I got a bit carried away when I signed up for the sci-fi course! I'm also going to be doing Greek & Roman Mythology (I flumped out of an OU Classics degree ten years ago as it was too much to do at the time, but I've always wanted to go back!), Basic Behavioural Neurology and Introduction to Genome Science. I'm keen to see where the fields have moved to since I left them :)

I was really tempted by the History of the World since 1300 course but it looked like quite a lot of work so if they offer it again next year I'll do it then. There were lots of others I fancied too!

message 2: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Oh, I know what you mean. I've gone a little crazy and for now I signed up for these:
- Fantasy and Science Fiction
- Modern and Contemporary American Poetry
- Vaccines
- Cardiac Arrest, Hypothermia, and Resuscitation Science
- Introduction to Genome Science
- Basic Behavioral Neurology
- Computer Science 101

With the current start dates there will be some overlap, but I think it will be manageable.
I still have a long wishlist of other courses I want to take in the future and since they keep adding courses I'm sure that list will only grow.

message 3: by Seawood (new)

Seawood lol, I thought I was crazy! It really is a fantastic resource.

message 4: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Yeah, I kind of feel crazy honestly. But what's the worst that could happen? If I can't keep up, no biggie, I can either drop courses and take them at a later time, or I can stay on and just watch/listen/learn without actual participation, then take them at a later time to complete them after all.

And I agree, it is a fantastic resource!

message 5: by Seawood (new)

Seawood Yep, that's what I figured too. I love the way it's set up so you can do that - they really recognise that life gets in the way, or it may not suit everyone.

message 6: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) I'm signed up for... 12 classes. :x

I went through and signed up for a ton that looked interesting, but now that I'm counting them, I think I overdid it. I'm going to sit down with a calendar and figure out how many of them overlap and pick and choose the ones I really want to take.

message 7: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I signed up for 8 courses, and will probably drop a few as the year goes on and I get swamped. But it never hurts to have the option. :)

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) Three, but none at the same time. First was computer science, completed. Next is the science fiction/fantasy course. After that will come a poetry class. I know for sure that I only have time for one at a time!

message 9: by Todd (new)

Todd (goofusmcnoofus) | 2 comments Besides this class I have Listening to World Music starting at the same time but that one should just be fun since I was a music major for a year (yeah, I didn't finish). Then in September I have History of the World since 1300 and Greek and Roman Mythology. Those two together may get interesting.

message 10: by Ashley (new)

Ashley I am only signed up for this one. There were a few others that I wanted to take but I have a full course load at the college I am paying to attend so I thought that sticking to the one was probably for the best.

How was the computer science class? I signed up for it the next time around.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) Martha wrote: "How was the computer science class? I signed up for it the next time around. ..."
It was a pretty broad overview, but the interactive coding exercises and lectures were well done and I really enjoyed it!

Good news. I'll definitely take that then.

message 14: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Have you seen the new courses they added? So many more interesting courses to follow. I'm gonna be busy well into the next year this way :)

Lalalala can't hear you. I'm desperately trying to ignore it! Til I see how this one goes, anyway..:)

You are a stronger person than I am, lol.

message 17: by Seawood (new)

Seawood :) I've just been flicking through my diary...we start this course on Monday, I've got Greek & Roman Mythology starting six weeks later, a 5K run to train for in September - and the kids break up from school tomorrow. They're not at an age where they'll play without an adult around, either. So: aaargh and lalalalala!

Speaking of the Greek & Roman course - has anyone tried to source the books yet? I've just been looking for the Greek Tragedies ones and the reference is a bit vague as to exactly which books they're talking about. If anyone has an ISBN I'd be grateful.

message 18: by Sam (new)

Sam W (SamW812) | 6 comments I'm enrolled in the Greek & Roman Mythology one but I have a big deadline at University on the 6th of September. It doesn't actually say when the Mythology course starts though, does it? I was hoping it'll start later in September.
I will also certainly be doing A History of the World since 1300. Other than that, I'll see how things go but there's quite a few I'm interested in.

message 19: by Seawood (new)

Seawood It says "September 2012" on the site...depends how late they want to run it up to Christmas, I guess. I run a ten-week block of lessons myself and my group starts back w/c 26th Sept so we can finish in the first couple of weeks of December and have a party. :) I've mostly just presumed G&R will start at the beginning of September so I don't sign up to anything else!

I went to log in to check out the videos for this course and ended up looking at the new ones. It did not end well for the amount of time I have in a day. :s

message 22: by Seawood (new)

Seawood Oh, pants. There is no way I could not sign up for Astrobiology and the Search for Extraterrestrial Life. It's run by one of my alma maters, I *have* to be supportive of their new foray into online courses, right? :)

message 23: by Joyce (new)

Joyce Hertzoff (hilandmum) | 18 comments I'm only signed up for this one here, but I'm taking a writing course at Writers Village University called Mythic Structure.

Hi classmate! I sign up for these 4 classes as well. :D

message 25: by Laura (new)

Laura (inphemeral) Besides this one I have signed up for Modern and Contemporary American Poetry ... There are so many interesting ones but I don't think I have time to do more.
I admire some of you guys taking like 6 or 8 courses!

At least the ones I own. I tend to prefer Richmond Lattimore anyway. Love his Illiad.
"

Cheers Dean, much appreciated. Pity they're not ebooks :(

message 27: by Christian (new)

Christian I took three courses, and already think that F&SF is gonna be a pretty dense one. Those are some thousand pages in 10 weeks to read and write about, and I did want to keep up with my Sword & Laser group to.

message 28: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa I too signed up for the Internet History, Technology, and Security class. Greatly enjoining the Introduction to Finance course while I wait for the Introduction to Mathematical Thinking and Introduction to Sustainability later in September and August respectively. It's too easy to go over-board with so many options, the Greek and Roman Mythology one surely looks tempting, all of this and I'm still waiting for the Introduction a là Programmation Objet class to be announced.
Hopefully I will be able to manage all of them without any of my schedules crashing.
The gift of free time, I so love it. Let's say that having a flexible work schedule prone to procrastination-inducing activities and hardly any work sometimes pays off.

message 29: by Tijana (new)

Tijana (tijanavrtelova) I signed up for 12 courses, since right now I have too much free time :D History, philosophy, literature, humanities in general: those are my areas of interest. So far so good, the Introduction to Sociology was really excellent, the professor was really great. I haven't finished it, though, I didn't go to midterm, but I will take it again next time it starts.
I am so looking forward to this one, like a little kid :D

message 30: by Sultanat (new)

Sultanat | 1 comments I am taking Intro to Finance right now along with Fantasy and Science Fiction. Also waiting for greek/roman mythology.

message 31: by Xiri (new)

Xiri | 135 comments I'm taking basically all courses available - feel free to question my sanity...

Maybe a group for other courses would - such as the poetry one - would be nice, too?

Oh, I missed that - yes, it would be nice, I wonder if we can convert this one? Or just start a new one.

17 new universities online today. I have signed up for ALL THE THINGS. There are 39 courses on my list. :O

I just woke up, so... 39 new courses?

Ah, insanity, but I still will sign up for all of them :-s

message 34: by Seawood (new)

Seawood lol. I couldn't work out how many new ones there were, 39 is the number I'm signed up for atm. Loads of new music ones, if that's your thing. Haven't signed up for any of those (though I may) because I should probably do work-like stuff first. I'm going to end up auditing loads, though, I think.

message 35: by Xiri (new)

Xiri | 135 comments I already audit most...

message 36: by Jute (new)

Jute | 113 comments I signed up for a ton more too!

We should make ourselves a group somewhere that will just allow us to talk about any of the classes we are taking!

I wish I'd signed up for the Poetry class now. The History class is fun so far!

We definitely need a group for the Mythology class.

You still can :) I only caught up yesterday! There is an essay for a poem of Emily Dickinson. The forums are hyperactive, however...

And your idea is great.

message 38: by Jute (new)

Jute | 113 comments Okay I'll create another group here, unless anyone thinks there's a better forum?

I thought I'd call it Coursera Friends. :) What do you think? Or anyone have a better name?

message 39: by Seawood (new)

Seawood Fine with me!

message 40: by Xiri (new)

Xiri | 135 comments Fine! Do please invite or what :)

message 42: by Jute (new)

Jute | 113 comments BTW anyone who wants to join our continuing group for Coursera courses, please join up!

message 43: by Emy (new)

Emy (emypt) | 17 comments I'm nuts:

Gamification, History of the World (listening now as I type), and Mythology. If I do this next year I'm going to be FAR more careful over when classes are scheduled - next week I have 4 running simultaneously /panic

message 44: by Xiri (new)

Xiri | 135 comments I'm more nuts. I've signed up for all. Certainly more than 10 at the moment, because August and September had a flurry.

message 45: by Emy (new)

Emy (emypt) | 17 comments Nice to know I'm not alone! Currently trying to sneak time to write essays at work coz all my home time is spent watching videos, reading texts and then trying to fit in running the wow guild while the GM is away for a fortnight... :)

message 46: by Xiri (new)

Xiri | 135 comments Well, I'm taking the easy way out to audit and not write essays on some of them :)

Which WoW?

message 47: by Emy (new)

Emy (emypt) | 17 comments World of Warcraft :)

My husband just started WoW again...

Xiri | 135 comments Emy wrote: "World of Warcraft :)"

Which expansion ;)

My boyfriend is playing Cataclysm again... said he was not exactly fond of the newer one's "dumbing down" of the gameplay. Or is it Wrath which he is set on again, can't remember.

He is pretty much an addict when he can! Same about Minecraft, too.

message 50: by Jute (new)

Jute | 113 comments My husband wanted to get in some play before Pandoria, the latest expansion, is released.

I am mostly playing Rift now when I play...but I still have subscriptions to TERA and SWTOR.
